Notizen: Abstract Total charge-changing cross sections have been measured for8Li on C and Pb targets, for9Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets, as well as for11Li on C, Sn and Pb targets at about 80 MeV/nucleon. These data are compared to measured total reaction cross sections and Glauber-type calculations using Hartree-Fock density distributions. These comparisons allow to draw conclusions on the proton density distribution of the neutronrich lithium isotopes. The results show that even for the most exotic nucleus11Li the proton distribution is only very weakly influenced by the long tail in the neutron density distribution already established in several experiments.

Notizen: Abstract Total interaction cross sections have been measured for8Li on C and Pb targets, for9Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets as well as for11Li on C, Sn and Pb targets. For each beam, we also used a plastic scintillator as target. The measurements with the scintillator targets are used to extract reduced nuclear radii of the lithium isotopes. These radii are then used for the calculation of the nuclear part of the total cross section for the other targets. The total electromagnetic-dissociation (EMD) cross sections have been deduced and are compared to different models. A strong target-charge-dependent EMD cross section is measured for11Li reaching 2.96 −0.82 +0.84 b for the Pb target. In the9Li case, a large EMD cross section for high-Z targets has been observed which amounts to 0.75 ± 0.45 b for the Pb target. The EMD cross sections of both,9Li and11Li, may be understood by the giantdipole-resonance model.

Notizen: Microtubular networks are extensively developped in many ciliate species. In several of them, we investigate the occurrence of the post-translational glutamylation of tubulin [Eddé et al., 1990: Science 247:82-85; Eddé et al., 1991: J. Cell. Biochem. 46:134-142] using as a probe for such modified tubulin, the monoclonal antibody GT335 [Wolff et al., 1992: Eur. J. Cell Biol. 59:425-432]. Results obtained in Paramecium strongly suggest that both axonemal and cytoplasmic tubulin are glutamylated. As in the vertebrate brain tubulin so far tested, the GT335 epitope is located at the carboxy-terminal fragment of cytoplasmic tubulin removed by subtilisin treatment. Immunoblotting and immunofluorescence experiments reveal that, unlike tubulin acetylation, glutamylation is not restricted to cold-resistant microtubules. In addition, immunofluorescence studies performed on dividing cells show that glutamylation takes place soon after the polymerization of microtubules. Finally, glutamylated tubulin is also detected in the ciliate species Euplotes, Tetrahymena, and Paraurostyla. Together with results obtained on flagellate species, this suggests that tubulin glutamylation came out early in the course of eukaryotic evolution and has been widely exploited in various cellular strategies. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notizen: Summary Ciliates are highly differentiated cells which display extensive deployment of microtubular systems. Because genetic diversity of tubulin is extremely reduced in these cells, microtubule diversity is mostly generated at the post-translational level either through direct modification of tubulin or through the binding of associated proteins to microtubules. We have undertaken a systematic exploration of microtubule diversity in ciliates by way of production of monoclonal antibodies. Previously we reported the biochemical characterization of these antibodies. In addition to antibodies directed against primary sequences, we obtained antibodies directed against post-translational modifications. In this paper, we report a detailed analysis of the distribution of the various epitopes on the microtubular networks ofParamecium, both in interphase cells and during division morphogenesis. Each of these antibodies decorates a subset of microtubules. Acetylation, recognized by antibodies TEU 318 and TEU 348, is detected on stable microtubules early after microtubule assembly. Epitopes recognized by two other antibodies (TAP 952 and AXO 58) are found on a subset of stable microtubules; in addition, the TAP 952 antibody is also found on labile microtubules; both epitopes are detected as soon as microtubule assembly occurs. In contrast, the epitope of the antibody, AXO 49, is associated with only a restricted subset of stable microtubules in the interphase cell, and is detected a lag-time after microtubule assembly during division morphogenesis. These data show that microtubule diversity is generated through a time-dependent sequence and according to a definite spatial pattern.

Notizen: The primary goal of this paper is to show how second derivative information can be used in an effective way in structural optimization problems. The basic idea is to generate such an information at the expense of only one more ‘virtual load case’ in the sensitivity analysis part of the finite element code. To achieve this goal a primal-dual approach is employed, that can also be interpreted as a sequential quadratic programming method.Another objective is to relate the proposed method to the well known family of approximation concepts techniques, where the primary optimization problem is transformed into a sequence of non-linear explicit subproblems. When restricted to diagonal second derivatives, the new approach can be viewed as a recursive convex programming method, similar to the ‘Convex Linearization’ method (CONLIN), and to its recent generalization, the ‘Method of Moving Asymptotes’ (MMA).This new method has been successfully tested on simple problems that can be solved in closed form, as well as on sizing optimization of trusses. In all cases the method converges faster than CONLIN, MMA or other approximation techniques based on reciprocal variables.

Notizen: It is shown how existing methods based on optimality criteria can be generalized using a first order approximation for all the constraints. In this case, these methods can be presented as a particular case of mathematical programming methods that use a linear approximation of constraints expressed in the space of the inverse of the design variables. A mixed method is proposed that can present the main advantages of both classical methods.

Notizen: This paper is mainly concerned with a new structural optimization method based upon the concept of duality in convex programming. This rigorous formulation permits justification of many intuitive procedures which are used in the classical optimality criteria approaches. Furthermore, the dual algorithms proposed in this paper do not suffer from the drawbacks inherent to the optimality criteria approach. The selection of the set of active constraints does not introduce any difficulty and is achieved correctly in all cases. The subdivision of the design variables in an active and passive group is intrinsically contained in the dual formulation. The efficiency of the dual algorithms is shown with reference to some problems for which the classical methods do not lead to satisfactory results.

Notizen: A new and powerful mathematical programming method is described, which is capable of solving a broad class of structural optimization problems. The method employs mixed direct/reciprocal design variables in order to get conservative, first-order approximations to the objective function and to the constraints. By this approach the primary optimization problem is replaced with a sequence of explicit subproblems. Each subproblem being convex and separable, it can be efficiently solved by using a dual formulation. An attractive feature of the new method lies in its inherent tendency to generate a sequence of steadily improving feasible designs. Examples of application to real-life aerospace structures are offered to demonstrate the power and generality of the approach presented.

Notizen: This paper presents a general parametric design approach for 2-D shape optimization problems. This approach has been achieved by integrating practical design methodologies into numerical procedures. It is characterized by three features: (i) automatic selection of a minimum number of shape design variables based on the CAD geometric model; (ii) integration of sequential convex programming algorithms to solve equality constrained optimization problems; (iii) efficient sensitivity analysis by means of the improved semi-analytical method. It is shown that shape design variables can be either manually or systematically identified with the help of equality constraints describing the relationship between geometric entities.Numerical solutions are performed to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. A discussion of the results is also given:
