Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Although the very high resolution experimental LANDSAT imagery permits rapid snow cover mapping at low cost, only one observation is available very 9 days. In contrast, low resolution operational imagery acquired by the ITOS and SMS/GOES satellites provide the daily synoptic observations necessary to monitor the rapid changes in snow covered areas in the entire Salt-Verde watershed. Geometric distortions in meteorological satellite imagery require specialized optical equipment or digital image processing for snow cover mapping.

Description: Utilization of new sources of statewide remote sensing data, taken from high-altitude aircraft and from spacecraft is discussed along with incorporation of information extracted from these sources into on-going land and resources management programs in Arizona. Statewide cartographic applications of remote sensor data taken by NASA high-altitude aircraft include the development of a statewide semi-analytic control network, the production of nearly 1900 orthophotoquads (image maps) that are coincident in scale and area with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7. 5 minute topographic quadrangle map series, and satellite image maps of Arizona produced from LANDSAt multispectral scanner imagery. These cartographic products are utilized for a wide variety of experimental and operational earth resources applications. Applications of the imagery, image maps, and derived information discussed include: soils and geologic mapping projects, water resources investigations, land use inventories, environmental impact studies, highway route locations and mapping, vegetation cover mapping, wildlife habitat studies, power plant siting studies, statewide delineation of irrigation cropland, position determination of drilling sites, pictorial geographic bases for thematic mapping, and court exhibits.

Description: Repetitive LANDSAT and NOAA-4 satellite imagery together with aerial surveys are being evaluated to develop an operational capability for mapping snowcover distributions on the Salt-Verde watershed of central Arizona. Satellite telemetry is also being used for near-real time relay of hydrologic data to aid in the management and operation of reservoirs on the Salt and Verde Rivers. Aerial reconnaissance flights were conducted to collect information on the depth and distribution of snowcover to provide ground truth for use in the analysis of the satellite imagery. A technique for rapid and economical determination of snow depths, using oblique aerial photography of snow markers, was developed.

Description: Ground surveys and aerial observations were used to monitor rapidly changing moisture conditions in the Salt-Verde watershed. Repetitive satellite snow cover observations greatly reduce the necessity for routine aerial snow reconnaissance flights over the mountains. High resolution, multispectral imagery provided by LANDSAT satellite series enabled rapid and accurate mapping of snow-cover distributions for small- to medium-sized subwatersheds; however, the imagery provided only one observation every 9 days of about a third of the watershed. Low resolution imagery acquired by the ITOSa dn SMS/GOES meteorological satellite series provides the daily synoptic observation necessary to monitor the rapid changes in snow-covered area in the entire watershed. Short term runoff volumes can be predicted from daily sequential snow cover observations.

Description / Table of Contents: γ-Anti Effect in 1-Phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane Derivatives with Substituents at Phosphorus. Synthesis and Structure of Pentacarbonyl(1-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) ChromiumIn 1-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives of the composition C8H15P(X) the CC-conformation always dominates. Changes in the chemical shifts of the bridge-head carbon atom C(5) in the 13C-NMR spectrum are only originated by the electronic influence of the substituent X at the phosphorus centre. Based on a homogeneous interpretation of the electronic interactions and with regard to Pearsons's definition of electronegativity the electronegativities of substituents at the phosphorus atom X = Cr(CO)5, Fe(CO)4, and Ni(CO)3 are estimated. These groups are placed in antiperiplanar orientation to the carbon atom C(5).The molecular structure of (1-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]-nonane) Cr(CO)5 3 was elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecule features the 1-phosphabicyclononane ligand in the CC-conformation, which has a nearly undistorted Cr(CO)5 unit coordinated to the phosphorus atom (d Cr—P = 2.368(1) Å).
