    Notizen: Summary Rates of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) turnover in the mediobasal hypothalamus of male rats were estimated using pharmacological methods during the daytime and at night. Concentrations of 5-HT in this hypothalamic area were higher nocturnally than diurnally; this was apparently due to increased 5-HT synthesis and decreased 5-HT catabolism at night.

    Notizen: Dynamic light scattering has been used to characterize a variety of lathyritic rat skin collagen solutions. The technique was used to monitor the onset of fibril assembly in vitro and to investigate the thermal memory effect. Although the incorporation of thermal memory was demonstrated by reheating the sample and subsequently observing a shortened turbidimetric lag phase, no significant differences between naive solutions and ones exhibiting thermal memory could be detected using photon correlation spectroscopy. This suggests that subtle changes in the state of the collagen molecules rather than extensive changes in the degree of aggregation are responsible for the thermal memory effect. During fibrillogenesis, no large-scale changes in the distribution of monomers or aggregates occur until near the end of the lag phase.

    Notizen: The translational and rotational dynamics of tobacco mosaic virus in sodium phosphate buffer (pH =7.5) solutions has been investigated by polarized and depolarized light scattering Rayleigh linewidth studies. For concentrations ranging from 1.75 × 10-4 g ml-1 to 0.25 × 10-4 g ml-1 the translational diffusion coefficient (DT) has been found to be slightly concentration dependent and extrapolation to zero concentration gives D020°C = 0.34 ± 0.01 × 10-7 cm2S-1. A full analysis of the polarized spectra obtained at high and low scattering angles and the depolarized spectra at near zero scattering angles has enabled these techniques to be compared and the rotational diffusion constant DR to be determined. At a solution concentration of 1.75 × 10-4 g ml-1 a mean value is found to be DR20°C = 350 ± 30s-1. These values of DT and DR are in approximate agreement with calculations based on models of the tobacco mosaic virus molecule as a cylindrical rod.

    Notizen: The surface chemistry of an alkaline-earth boroaluminosilicate glass is changed by contact with chemical solutions. The present study shows that RCA cleaning creates a silica-rich surface on the glass. This altered surface can be removed by hydrofluoric acid etching. During the RCA cleaning process, glass components can be transferred to a polysilicon film placed in the same alkaline solution. The acidic solution in turn removes most of the contamination from the polysilicon. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: Currently, there is great interest in understanding and improving the bond between the fibers and matrix in high performcance composite materials. In many recently developed systems, fiber surface treatments have been developed to improve poor bonding. These treatments are often evaluated by measureing their effect on a composite property sensitive to the interfacial bond strength, typically the composite shear strength. This paper presents an evaluation of the influence of the matrix and interface properties on the transverse tensile strength. These effects were quantified by compring transverse flexural experimental data with results from a finite element micromechanics model. The results indicate that the transverse tensile strength is significantly more dependent upon sizing than is the shear strength. Finally, the transvere flexure test appears to provide an additional and complementary test for evaluating interface bond characteristics.

    Beschreibung: The analysis of space science data often requires researchers to work with many different types of data. For instance, correlative analysis can require data from multiple instruments on a single spacecraft, multiple spacecraft, and ground-based data. Typically, data from each source are available in a different format and have been written on a different type of computer, and so much effort must be spent to read the data and convert it to the computer and format that the researchers use in their analysis. The large and ever-growing amount of data and the large investment by the scientific community in software that require a specific data format make using standard data formats impractical. A format-independent approach to accessing and analyzing disparate data is key to being able to deliver data to a diverse community in a timely fashion. The system in use at the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) node of the NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) is based on the object-oriented Distributed Inventory Tracking and Data Ordering Specification (DITDOS), which describes data inventories in a storage independent way. The specifications have been designed to make it possible to build DITDOS compliant inventories that can exist on portable media such as CD-ROM's. The portable media can be moved within a system, or from system to system, and still be used without modification. Several applications have been developed to work with DITDOS compliant data holdings. One is a windows-based client/server application, which helps guide the user in the selection of data. A user can select a data base, then a data set, then a specific data file, and then either order the data and receive it immediately if it is online or request that it be brought online if it is not. A user can also view data by any of the supported methods. DITDOS makes it possible to use already existing applications for data-specific actions, and this is done whenever possible. Another application is a stand-alone tool to assist in the extraction of data from portable media, such as CD-ROM's. In addition to the applications, there is a set of libraries that can facilitate building new DITDOS compliant applications.

    Beschreibung: The Space Physics Archive Search and Extract (SPASE) project is an international collaboration among Heliophysics (solar and space physics) groups concerned with data acquisition and archiving. Within this community there are a variety of old and new data centers, resident archives, "virtual observatories", etc. acquiring, holding, and distributing data. The main product of the SPASE group is an XML-based SPASE Data Model now in operational use to enable searches for and ultimate acquisition of data of interest to a researcher. The SPASE Data Model defines the content of resource descriptions (metadata). The intent is to describe all SCientifically usable Heliophysics data sets using the Data Model. Another product of the SPASE group, in collaboration with NASA's Virtual Observatories, is a set of tools and services which work with SPASE meta data. This includes Registry Services which can retrieve and render metadata using resource identifiers and facilitate the downloading of the data referenced by the meta data. The SPASE Data Model has also been used as a vocabulary in specialized data models. One example is the Heliophysics Event List Manager (HELM) model. The SPASE Data Model is also being expanded to provide the means for more detailed description of data sets with the aim of enabling more automated ingestion and use of the data through detailed format descriptions. The evolution is based on a number of lessons learned and feedback from our community. Some of the lessons learned are unique to Heliophysics, and some are common to the various data diSCiplines. We will discuss the present state of SPASE usage, the role the SPASE Data Model can play in speCialized data models and how we foresee the development direction in the future.
