Notes: Single-chain particles of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were prepared by spreading a 10-4 wt.-% solution of PEO in benzene on a hot water surface. After isothermal crystallization at 317,2 ± 0,1 K for 10 h, regular-shaped single-chain crystals were observed. A variety of typical morphologies were also found, and some of them are discussed on the basis of the habit of PEO crystals and various twin modes.

Notes: In this work the relationship between structure and water sorption for epoxy films was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It is shown that the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy can be applied to obtain information about the amount of water absorbed by the epoxy film and the water permeation through the film, while only the amount of water absorbed is obtained from the “sorption method”. The free volume is the decisive factor for both the amount of water in the cured epoxy film and water permeation through the film.

Notes: Homopolymeric H-FP (FP: fishbone-like, azo-based liquid crystalline polysilsesquioxanes) and copolymeric C-FP were synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction of a vinylterminated azo compound with a ladder-like poly(hydrosilsesquioxane) (H-T) and random poly(methylhydrosilsesquioxane) (MH-T), respectively, in the presence of Cp2PtCl2 (Cp: cyclopentadienyl) used as the catalyst. This new type of liquid crystalline polymers is thermotropic. With increasing temperature FP's first enter a mesophase showing a normal texture, and then some peculiar textures different from the ordinary mesophase appear at an elevated temperature showing some bright belts, lines and spots on the black background, which can be supposed to be a self-organized structure originating from ladder-like main chain aggregation or association via interaction between the mesomorphic side chains.

Notes: A series of N2O2 tetradentate ligands with a range of substituents attached to the nitrogen atoms have been prepared (H2Ln) (n = 1-9). Treatment of these ligands and the N2S2 tetradentate ligand H2L10 with [WO2Cl2(DME)] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) in the presence of triethylamine leads to the formation of cis-dioxotungsten(VI) complexes [WO2(Ln)] (n = 1-10). Reaction of the N2O2 tetradentate ligands H2Ln (n = 1, 3-7) with ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate and dilute hydrochloric acid gives the corresponding molybdenum(VI) analogs [MoO2(Ln)] (n = 1, 3-7). These compounds have been spectroscopically characterized and the molecular structures of [WO2(Ln)] (n = 1, 2, 9) and [MoO2(L5)] have been established by X-ray diffraction analysis. These high-valent compounds participate in oxygen-atom transfer reactions and can catalyze the oxidation of benzoin with dimethyl sulfoxide. The complex [WO2(L10)], which contains an S-donor ligand, has lower reduction potential and higher reactivity toward oxo-transfer reactions than analogous tungsten complexes having N2O2 ligands. The kinetics of these catalytic processes along with the structure and electrochemistry of these dioxotungsten and -molybdenum complexes are described and compared.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2005/1999/98246_s.pdf or from the author.

    Notes: For a polycondensation reaction with identical structural units AaBb (i.e. each unit has a functional groups of type A and b of type B) the kth radius of gyration \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\left\langle {R^2 } \right\rangle _k = \sum\limits_n {n^k \cdot \left\langle {R_n^2 } \right\rangle P_n } } & {({\rm sum over all }n{\rm - mers; see Eqs}{\rm . (11) and (17))}{\rm }} \\ \end{array} $\end{document} is investigated. By means of a differential method, a recursion formula that holds true for both the pre-gel and the post-gel state is obtained for the evaluation of the kth radius.

Notes: By means of probability theory, the sol fraction of an Aa1 Bb1-Aa2 Bb2 type copolymerisation reaction, in which intramolecular reactions are neglected, is investigated in the post-gel regime to give the gelation condition explicitly. (Aa1 Bb1 is a monomer with a1 functional groups of type A and b1 functional groups of type B.)

Notes: The sol fraction for the post-gel regime in AaBb-type polymerisations is investigated in a way which allows to study the total, the sol, the gel, the tree-gel and the loop-gel fractional conversions. Associated with these conversions, corresponding gel points are discussed as the threshold of sol-gel transition. (AaBb is a monomer with a functional groups of type A and b functional groups of type B.)

Notes: Freeze-dried particles of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were prepared from sublimation of a 1 × 10-2 wt.-% solution of PEO in benzene in an ice-salt bath. After isothermal crystallization at 318.2 ± 0.1 K for 2 h, an unusual planar zigzag form of PEO was found. A variety of unique spherulite-like morphologies were also observed, and their formation is discussed on the basis of the interaction between solvent molecules and segment of the polymer chains.

Notes: By taking an AaBb-type polymerisation as an exampleEach unit has a functional groups of type A and b of type B., an intrinsic symmetry of the equilibrium number fraction distribution of species is revealed. The symmetry shows that the distribution is invariant under transformation between the variables which describe the total system and the variables which describe the sol. It results that, when the polymer quantities for the pre-gel regime are given, the corresponding quantities for the post-gel regime can easily be obtained. As an illustration, the k th radius of an AaBb-type polymerisation is discussed.
