Notes: The surface rejuvenation model of the turbulent burst process, already developed for the momentum and heat transfer processes, is applied to the field of mass transfer. The range of applicability of the theory, previously shown to be valid for the Prandtl number range 0.7 to 64 is extended to Schmidt numbers of 6,500 without introducing any new parameters. Concentration and temperature profiles for high Schmidt and Prandtl numbers are in agreement with experimental data. Theoretical expressions for Sherwood and Stanton numbers are calculated and shown to be in agreement with experimental data over five orders of magnitude.

Notes: Gas absorption and pressure drop were studied in a fin-wall conduit; a fin-wall conduit is a rectangular duct with fins placed on two internal walls perpendicular to the axis of flow. Pressure drop data were obtained with the air-water system. Gas absorption data were obtained with the air-ammonia-water system, and were corrected for the expected liquid-phase resistance by the use of oxygen desorption data. The pressure drop per transfer unit is on the order of 0.05 in. of water per transfer unit.

Notes: An automated distillation sequencing system (DSEQSYS) is presented, which consists of three components: a control program, a fuzzy heuristic synthesis program, and a process simulator. DSEQSYS, when applied to problems previously reported in the literature, overcomes some of the disadvantages of using heuristics or mathematical programming alone. DSEQSYS can address problems involving nonsharp separations, nonideal chemical behavior, and conflicting heuristics. A simple approach for converting the traditional separation heuristics into corresponding fuzzy heuristics is also demonstrated.

Notes: 10-Deacetylabaccatin III (10 DAB), an important precursor for paclitaxel semisynthesis, is enhanced in yew extracts using C10-deacetylase and C13-deacylase enzymes.4 C10-deacetylase is an intracellular enzyme produced by the fermentation of a soil microorganism, Nocardioides luteus (SC 13912). During the fermentation of Nocardioides luteus, the growth of cells reaches a maximum growth at 28 h. C10-deacetylase enzyme activity starts at 26 h and peaks at 38 h of the fermentation. The cells are recovered by centrifugation. The C10-deacetylase enzyme was purified from the Nocardioides luteus cells. The enzyme was purified 190-fold to near homogeneity. The purified enzyme appeared as a single band on 12.5% SDS-PAGE analysis with a molecular weight of 40,000 daltons. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A logical system is presented to describe organic reactions. It is based on the net structural change in a reaction, rather than on substructure searching. This system rigorously provides a place for any reaction. It is very simple to use by hand, but, since it is also numerical, it provides a basis for organizing and retrieving reactions in a database by computer. The effectiveness of a program, COGNOS, written to implement and test the system on a large database, lends confidence in this logic for organizing reactions.

Notes: A skin sample from the Iceman (Ötzi, Similaun Man, Man from Hauslabjoch) was studied by means of IR spectroscopy and histology, and the results were compared to those obtained from nine other more recent human tissue samples with known case reports. Attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy was used for studying the fate of proteins and lipids in these rare skin tissues. This technique provided a simple yet powerful means for semiquantitative determination of the main compound classes found in skin samples, namely, triacylglycerols, their main breakdown products (fatty acids), and proteins. When combined with histology, IR spectroscopy provided reliable information about the main conditions under which mummification of the samples had taken place. In the case of the 5300-year-old Iceman, preserved collagen contributed to the conservation of morphological structures of the skin, although no cellular structures such as nuclei survived. In addition, post-mortal alterations such as hydrolysis of triacylglycerols and phospholipids into fatty acids were unequivocally demonstrated. The solidified fatty acids provided a certain degree of preservation to the tissue characteristic of adipocere. Based on this observation, taken together with the concomitant loss of epidermis, we suggest that Iceman's body was submerged in water for a period of at least several months prior to desiccation. Results from other research disciplines support our conclusions.

Notes: During regulatory analyses for the determination of pesticide residues on agricultural commodities, a frequently encountered trichlorinated compound was misidentified by the NBS library search routine. This case history illustrates the need for more rigorous confirmation criteria when dealing with multi-chlorinated compounds where fragmentation can be dominated by methyl loss followed by loss of CO and HCl.

Notes: Recently we synthesized a naphthalene analog of medetomidine, 4-[1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl]-1H-imidazole hydrochloride (1), and found it to be highly potent in adrenergic systems. The separation of optical isomers of this naphthalene analog was achieved by using the isomers of tartaric acid. The optical purities of the isomers were determined by HPLC using a chiral column. Using X-ray analysis the (+)-isomer was determined to have the S absolute configuration. It has been reported that the (+)-isomer of medetomidine (2) is the most potent enantiomer on α2-adrenergic receptors. There were both qualitative and quantitative differences in biological activities of the optical isomers of 1 in α1- and α2-adrenergic receptor systems of guinea pig ileum and human platelets. (+)-(S)-1, but not ( - )-(R)-1 was a selective agonist of α2-mediated responses in ileum whereas ( - )-(R)-1 was more potent than (+)-(S)-1 as an inhibitor of α2-mediated platelet aggregation. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
