Notes: The general problem of heat transfer to fluids in laminar flow in tubes is discussed, a new procedure for the measurement of local laminar-flow heat transfer coefficients is described, and an empirical equation is presented for the correlation of data for local heat transfer rates to liquids flowing upward in laminar flow in vertical tubes under conditions of constant heat flux at the tube wall.

Notes: Numerical integration of the coexistence equation for isothermal P-x data can be carried out by standard techniques. Two questions are considered with respect to this procedure: (a) Do continuous, analytic P-x relations exist which fail to provide thermodynamically acceptable results? (b) Does it matter from what point one starts the numerical integration? It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate in each case that the answer is affirmative.

Notes: Total pressure measurements taken for the ternay systems acetone-chloroform-methanol and chloroform-ethanol-n-heptane at 50°C are reduced by Barker's method and correlated by an equation similar to one proposed by Wohl (1953).

Notes: Through an empirical but rational appraoch to the development of equations to represent the composition dependence of the excess Gibbs function for binary liquid systems, it has been found possible to correlate VLE data precisely, even for highly nonideal systems. This makes possible the application of Barker's method to the reduction of VLE data on a routine basis. The validity of the method is demonstrated through application to several sets of data from the literature, and new experimental data are presented for six diverse binary systems in vapor-liquid equilibrium at 50°C.

Notes: A systematic study is presented of the objective functions applicable to the reduction of vapor-liquid equilibrium data by regression procedures based on the principle of maximum likelihood. Numerical results are based on a set of artificial x-y-P data constructed so as to conform to the assumptions that underlie proper application of this principle.

Notes: A general treatment of fugacities of liquid mixtures yields the proper thermodynamic functions for dealing with nonidealities of liquid phases in equilibrium with vapor mixtures for systems containing supercritical components. The activity coefficients of the supercritical components may be based on standard state fugacities for the hypothetical pure liquids or on Henry's constants. A comparison of the rigorous thermodynamic equations which apply to the liquid phase for the two alternatives shows that they are equivalent.

Notes: Convenient and accurate methods of calculating the thermodynamic properties of gases from experimental compressibility-factor data through the use of the Redlich and Kwong equation of state are presented. Analytical and graphical methods are combined. As an example, fugacity and activity coefficients are calculated for the nitrogen-ethylene system at 50°C. for pressures up to 500 atm.

Notes: Mass transfer coefficients have been determined for the dissolution of Na2S2O3·5H2O crystals in water under conditions of turbulent agitation in a mixing vessel. The dissolution was carried out in a steady-flow process in which the area of selt crystals and the concentration of the solution in the mixing vessel were constant during each run. A comparison is made with previously unpublished results for batch runs in a similar system, and a method is developed for calculating the surface area of salt particles suspended in the mixing vessel under steady-flow conditions.

Notes: Experimental data are presented for the heats of mixing of liquids at 25°C. and 1 atm. pressure for ten binary and five ternary systems. For nonpolar binary systems a two-constant equation has been developed which correlates the data within experimental accuracy. Several equations which have been proposed for the calculation of ternary heats of mixing from binary data are tested for the systems studied. The method of Jost and Röck (4) for determining the constants in power-series functions from experimental data is considered.
