Notes: The synthesis and characterization of a new range of heterocyclic tellurium compounds based on 5,6-dimethyl-1,3-dihydro-2-telluraindene are reported. Conductivity measurements of most compounds in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) showed considerable ionic character in both solvents. 1H and 13C NMR studies indicated that the telluronium salts are stable to reductive elimination and no reaction between solute and solvent was observed. Benzyl and allyl telluronium salts are exceptional. Infrared and mass spectral data are reported and discussed.

Notes: Bagasse is a solid waste that remains after crushing sugarcane. Since bagasse is used as a fuel in sugar mills, characterization of its thermal degradation is rather important in order to use it efficiently. Thermal analysis of bagasse was carried out using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG) under oxidizing and inert atmospheres. Kinetic studies were based on weight loss obtained from TG analysis. Thermal degradation of bagasse takes place in two stages: volatilization and carbonization. The reaction rate, activation energy, entropy change, enthalpy change, and Gibbs free energy for the two thermal stages were calculated. The results indicated that activation energy for the volatilization stage is higher than that of decarbonization stage, and that both the rate constant and activation energy for combustion are higher than those of pyrolysis. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Flow injection analysis (FIA) systems incorporating potentiometric sensors for harmine and harmaline hallucinogens are described. The sensors are based on the use of harmine and harmaline tetraphenylborate or reineckate as electroactive compounds dispersed in plasticized PVC matrix. Laboratory-build flow-through sandwich cell equipped with silver disk coated with the sensing material is used as a detector in a low dispersion FIA system. The detector exhibits fast and linear response over the concentration range 10-2-10-6 M harmine or harmaline with a detection limit of 2 μg/mL (for 100 μL samples). Operational pH ranges from 3 to 8, sampling rate is 80 per hour and the precision is typically ±0.6%. Recovery and reproducibility data agree fairly well with those obtained by gas-liquid chromatography.

Notes: Benzoyl hydrazide monoligand complexes [M(BzH)]n+, where M = Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and V5+O are prepared and their physical data reported. X-ray single crystal diffraction of Cu(BzH)CI2 reveal a nearly square planar configuration around the Cu2+; the benzoyl hydrazide molecule acting as a bidentate ligand with the CO and NH2 groups as coordinate sites and the partial contribution of the chloride ions as well. E.p.r. showed a low spin orbital coupling (500 cm-1) versus 830 cm-1 for the free Cu2+ ion; obviously coordinate bond chelation for the Cu2+ ion is envisaged.
