Description: Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP) is the most frequently reported seafood-toxin illness in the world, and it causes substantial physical and functional impact. It produces a myriad of gastrointestinal, neurologic and/or cardiovascular symptoms which last days to weeks, or even months. Although there are reports of symptom amelioration with some interventions (e.g. IV mannitol), the appropriate treatment for CFP remains unclear to many physicians. We review the literature on the treatments for CFP, including randomized controlled studies and anecdotal reports. The article is intended to clarify treatment options, and provide information about management and prevention of CFP, for emergency room physicians, poison control information providers, other health care providers, and patients.

Notes: Experimental kinetic data are most conveniently correlated by the integrated form of the differential rate equations which the reactions are presumed to obey. A new method of obtaining an approximate integral solution of the differential equations is described and applied to a set of three consecutive competitive reactions. The approximate integral solution is used to correlate experimental data on systems whose stoichiometry would indicate a consecutivecompetitive mechanism. The compositions of the reaction mixes are predicted with a standard error of estimate of less than 4% of the original concentration of the initiating reactant, in most cases less than 2%. The estimates of the rate constants, found by fitting the approximate solution to the data, are within experimental error of the values obtained by differentiation of the published results.

Notes: In most industrial applications the linear model used for optimization by linear programming involves significant uncertainties and inaccuracies in the model parameters. This paper presents a framework which allows uncertainties in the matrix elements of the linear program to be taken into account without requiring detailed knowledge of the statistical characterstics of these uncertainties. Three cases for the inequality constrained problem are considered: independent variations in the array elements, column dependent variations, and row dependent variations. In each case the problem can still be solved as a linear program. In the first two cases, the problem size is doubled, while for the row dependent case a finitely terminating cutting plane algorithm is constructed.

Notes: This paper presents a framework which allows uncertainties in the matrix elements of an equality constrained linear program to be taken into account without requiring detailed knowledge of the statical characteristics of these uncertainties. The results are derived using the model of the linear program with flexibility previously introduced for the inequality constrained case. However, because a feasible region common to all perturbed constraint sets does not exist in the equality constrained case, a flexibility set which intersects all perturbed sets individually rather than jointly is defined. The flexibility set is constructed by identifying a finite subset of all perturbed constraint sets which need to be investigated. Three cases for the equality constrained problem are considered: independent variations in the array elements, column dependent variations, and row dependent variations. In each case the problem is solved using a possibly large but decomposable linear program. In the first two cases, this program needs to be solved only once; while in the row dependent case an iterative but finite solution procedure is required.

Notes: A new approach to the characterization of flow patterns and mixing through analysis of regional tracer dilution data obtained with a gamma camera is presented. Studies performed in a small, two-dimensional, multiple-inlet vessel demonstrate the experimental technique and how data are analyzed to determine the intravessel spatial distribution of fluid deriving from the traced stream. Good agreement is shown between calculated values of the flow distribution and visually observed flow patterns.

Notes: Techniques are developed for using the structural information contained in algebraic equation sets to aid in the study of convergence properties of iterative equation loops. The concept of inverse mapping is applied directly in order to study convergence properties of sequences. For problems in which there exist both a direct and inverse path for the computation of iterative loops, direct substitution techniques will converge via one path and diverge via the other path. When an inverse path existed, the direct substitution method was superior to simultaneous solution techniques for the problems studied. Not all iterative loops have an inverse path. For problems in which inverse paths do not originally exist, rearrangement of the equations of an iterative loop can result in a modified loop for which an inverse path does exist. The digraph representation of an iterative loop aids in deciding whether rearrangements are feasible for a particular problem. When inverse paths cannot conveniently be obtained, direct substitution cannot be successfully used and simultaneous solution techniques such as quasi-linearization are recommended.

Notes: A sample of phenol-formaldehyde was flash-pyrolyzed 11 times in the reaction chamber of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Quantitative analyses were determined for pyrolysis products which were present within 10 sec. after each flash. A high degree of consistency between compositions of products from consecutive flashes resulted. The significance of the results is discussed.

Notes: Samples of glass- and nylon-reinforced CTL 91-LD phenolic and G. E. 124 resin were pyrolyzed in an arc image furnace at high vacuum. Compositions of the various degradation gases are reported. Average molecular weights of these gases were calculated. A description of the mechanism of pyrolysis of G. E. 124 resins is presented. A critique of the method is included.
