    Notes: The dynamics of self-assembling systems were investigated for the model amphiphile A2B2 using stochastic dynamic simulations. Temperature jump computer "experiments" were performed and the evolution of the system to its new equilibrium state monitored. The results were interpreted based on the Aniansson–Wall theory of micellar kinetics. The transient behavior predicted using the Aniansson–Wall theory agrees well with the simulated data, particularly at short times. At long times, deviations are observed which may be ascribed to errors in estimating the dissociation rate and number density of aggregates in the all important micelle-depleted zone. The micellar dissociation constant was calculated from independent tagging simulations. The amphiphile exit rate constant was calculated at different temperatures from which an activation energy associated with the removal of a surfactant chain from a micelle was found to be of order 10–15 kT and to be independent of the friction coefficient. Finally the Helmholtz free energy profile associated with the extraction of a surfactant chain from a micelle was determined. A free energy barrier height of order 5 kT was obtained. Kramers' rate theory was employed to determine the corresponding exit rate constant which was found to be in excellent agreement with the results obtained from tagging runs. The barrier height associated with the insertion of a surfactant chain was order 1 kT, suggesting that the association process is diffusion controlled. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The self-assembly of short amphiphilic molecules of type A2B2 (A=hydrophilic, B=hydrophobic) is investigated using Stochastic Dynamics simulations with a scalar frictional coefficient. Equilibrium properties were calculated and explained in the context of existing thermodynamic theories. Spherical micelles are observed to form and the effect of temperature and total surfactant concentration on the structural properties are investigated. Above the critical micelle concentration, a decline in the free surfactant concentration is observed, contrary to existing theories dealing with micelle formation. The observed behavior can be explained in terms of excluded volume effects. Excellent agreement is obtained between the resulting predictions and the simulation results over the entire concentration range. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The chemical and biological composition of groundwater sampled from a 76 m deep borehole situated 80 m from an unlined, earth-banked lagoon excavated in Upper Chalk and continuously used to store liquid cow manure was regularly monitored from August 1975 to January 1982 for signs of pollution. The lagoon became self-sealing 3 months after the start of filling in 1975, but was further enlarged and re-filled in autumn 1976, and emptied by dragline in September 1978 and 1980. No significant changes in groundwater composition were detected in the period August 1975 to December 1978. In January 1979, significant numbers of Escherichia coli and a large, rapid increase in concentrations of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sodium (Na), chloride (Cl) and sulphate (SO4) were detected in the groundwater. Nutrient concentrations fluctuated at elevated levels throughout 1979 but decreased during 1980. Additional bacterial and chemical (NH4-N, P and K) contamination was recorded in January 1981 and subsequent months. The contamination was considered to have occurred as a result of fissure flow through the unsaturated zone of the Upper Chalk following repeated disruption of the self-sealing layer during emptying of the lagoon by dragline in September 1978 and 1980. The results indicate that unlined, earth-banked slurry storage lagoons need to be carefully managed to avoid biological and chemical pollution of Chalk aquifers.
