Notes: Abstract Water quality was estimated from 205 samples of benthic invertebrates collected between 1982 and 1986 in 51 rivers of western Switzerland (canton of Vaud). Each sample consisted of the combined list of taxa resulting from one spring sample pooled with one summer sample. Water quality was indicated by total number of taxa and number of taxa intolerant of pollution: i. e. Heptageniidae, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera with a case. Six classes of values were delimited for each of these two variables by cluster analysis. Values from zero to five were attributed to each class. The index of water quality was computed by adding these two values in each sample. According to this index, good water quality was indicated by 42% of samples. This index can be adapted to other rivers because its components are easily modified.

Notes: Abstract The relationships between the diversity of invertebrate communities and the altitude of sampling sites were analysed in 438 benthic samples, collected between 1982 and 1991, in 56 rivers of western Switzerland. Diversity, estimated from total number of taxa (genus or family) and from number of taxa intolerant of pollution, was positively correlated with increasing altitude. In contrast, density of human population and the level of organic pollution were negatively correlated with increasing altitude. Therefore, the upstream increase of invertebrate diversity was attributed to the decrease of human population which is the main source of organic pollution. In this study, altitude was used, instead of organic pollution, to predict diversity. Empirical relationships between diversity and altitude were applied to surveys of water quality to describe the general altitudinal pattern characteristic for each region and to single out anomalous sites and rivers. In addition, changes in the altitudinal patterns of diversity can be used to monitor the recovery of rivers from pollution.

Notes: Abstract A total of 1424 samples of benthic invertebrates, collected in 56 rivers of western Switzerland (canton of Vaud), was used to improve the RIVAUD (Rivers of Vaud) index of environmental quality. This index, described for the first time in 1989, was based on total number of taxa and on number of taxa intolerant of pollution (Plecoptera, Heptageniidae, and Trichoptera with a case). The 1995 version of RIVAUD, called RIVAUD 95, presented a larger range of values (0–20) than the previous one (0–10), to describe more precisely the variations of environmental quality. According to RIVAUD 95, the environmental quality of Swiss rivers increased with the altitude of sampling sites because anthropogenic impacts decreased along the same gradient. This altitudinal pattern was used to define classes of environmental quality which can be adapted to the rivers of other regions.

Notes: The electrochemical transfer of quinidine across the H2O/1,2-dichloroethane interface was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, so as to determine its lipophilicity. The formal transfer potential was measured as a function of the pH of the aqueous phase. Both singly and doubly protonated quinidine cations can transfer across the interface, and their formal Gibbs free energies of transfer were observed to be 7.7 and 31.2 kJ mol-1, respectively. Between pH 0 and 3, only the doubly charged quinidine was present in the aqueous phase and was observed to transfer. Between pH 3 and 6, the transfer of both cations occurred. The proportion of doubly charged quinidine decreased progressively in this pH range and disappeared completely above pH 6. The overall process was analyzed using a thermodynamic model. The relationship between the various forms of quinidine in both phases and pH was established and found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. With this model, the acid-base equilibrium constants in the organic phase could be calculated as pKa1o = 9.66 ± 0.21 and pKa2o = 14.20 ± 0.16 (the subscripts a1o and a2o refer to the first and second dissociation constants). This study illustrates how the partition of ionic species can be taken into account in the determination of lipophilicity and in the description of the passive transfer of organic drugs.

Notes: Facilitated proton transfer may be of potential significance in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes. Here, we show that the NSAID piroxicam and its N-and O-methylated derivatives act as ionophores for proton transfer across the H2O/1,2-dichloroethane interface. Investigations by cyclic voltammetry showed that the proton transfer occurs by interfacial protonation of the ionophore. The dissociation constants of the three compounds in the organic phase were calculated by Matsuda's theory. With this particular transfer mechanism, the present study exemplifies how electrochemistry at a liquid/liquid interface can be applied to calculate the fundamental thermodynamic parameters related to the pharmacokinetic behavior of ionic drugs.

Notes: -Transition state mimicry is one of the most powerful concepts in enzyme inhibitor design and has led to the development of catalytic antibodies. Transition state analogs are compounds with a fixed shape that resemble the geometry and charge distribution of the transition state of a given reaction. Stabilization of a transition state like conformation is most often achieved by incorporating a ring system into the analog. We show herein that atropisomerism can be used as a new principle for enforcing a transition state like conformation. Atropisomerism relates to the existence of stereoisomers of structurally constrained molecules due to a frozen rotation about a single bond, as for example in binaphthol. The 1-aminomethylnaphthalene derivative 1 exhibits atropisomerism due to a frozen rotation about the C(1)-C(methylene) single bond, which holds the dihedral angle θ[C(2)-C(1)-C(methylene)-N] close to 90°. Compound 1 mimics the transition state for hydride transfer between 1,4-dihydroquinolines 4 and acetone.
