    Notes: The quality of large semiconductor crystals grown from the melt for use in electronic and optoelectronic devices is strongly influenced by the intricate coupling of heat and mass transfer and melt flow in growth systems. This paper reviews the present state of understanding of these processes starting from the simplest descriptions of solidification processes to detailed numerical calculations needed for quantitative modeling of processing with solidification. Descriptions of models for the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger and Czochralski crystal growth techniques are included as examples of the level of understanding of industrially important methods.

    Notes: Aqueous solutions of antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGP) exhibit hysteresis between the freezing and melting temperatures. Several recent studies on the mechanism of function of this protein system suggest that a likely model is for the antifreeze molecules to be adsorbed onto the surface of the crystals. However, direct proof of the presence of adsorbed AFGP has eluded previous researchers. In the present study, enhanced surface second-harmonic generation (SSHG) was observed in the presence of an active AFGP solution in contact with a pure single crystal of ice. The enhancement of SSHG is a positive indication that active AFGP molecules adsorb to the surface of ice crystals.

    Notes: The combination reaction between N and H atoms has been studied in a flow system by mixing H atoms produced by thermal dissociation of H2 with active nitrogen produced by a microwave discharge. Relative N atom concentrations were determined from the intensity of the yellow nitrogen afterglow. Absolute N and H atom concentrations were measured by EPR absorption spectroscopy. Absolute N atom concentrations were also determined by titration with NO. Upper and lower limits of 6.4 ± 1.5 × 10-32 and 3.1 ± 1.0 × 10-32 cm6 molecule-2 sec-1 were determined for the rate constant.

    Description: The role of the International Space Station in future U.S. aerospace education efforts is discussed from a NASA perspective. The overall design concept and scientific and technological goals of the Space Station are reviewed, and particular attention is given to education projects such as the Davis Planetarium Student Space Station, the Starship McCullough, the Space Habitat, the working Space Station model in Austin, TX, the Challenger Center for Space Life Education, Space M+A+X, and the Space Science Student Involvement Program. Also examined are learning-theory aspects of aerospace education: child vs adult learners, educational objectives, teaching methods, and instructional materials.
