    Notes: A numerical computation is carried out to study the interaction of rotation and natural convection inside a finite horizontal cylinder. The natural convection is due to differential heating on the two ends, while the rotation is along the axis of the horizontal cylinder. The aspect ratio, length of the cylinder to its radius, is 2.0. The Grashof number is fixed at 1.43 × 106 with air as a working fluid. The effect of rotation is examined with Gr/Re2 from 7.0 × 10-2 to ∞, which covers the range from rotation dominated flow to buoyancy dominated flow. It is found that when rotational speed is relatively small or Gr/Re2 » 1, the effect of rotation is to render the spatial heat flux distribution more uniform. As the rotational speed increases, the heat transfer rate distribution on the end surfaces is more homogenous and its level is also reduced. When the rotational speed is sufficiently high (Gr/Re2 « 1.0), heat transfer is by conduction only and the whole fluid inside the enclosure rotates as a rigid body. It is shown that there exists a rotation speed range in which one can have both relatively high and uniform heat transfer rates on the end walls.

    Notes: The etch-decoration transmission electron microscopy technique was used to measure the turnover frequencies of the C-CO2 reaction in the temperature range 600-900°C. The absolute rate constants of the elementary rate steps were determined, and were in reasonably good agreement with statistical theories. The rates on monolayer steps of graphite were higher than those on multilayer steps by approximately four orders of magnitude at 800°C, because the C—O bond in the reaction intermediate is stronger by about 9 kcal/mol on the monolayer steps. The rates of vacancy formation in the lattice were also determined. The vacancies are formed by atomic oxygen dissociated from CO2.

    Notes: Great attention has been paid to the toughening of isotactic polypropylene (PP) in recent years in order to make full use of this plastic. This paper presents the results of our study on the compatibility of PP with ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPT), polybutadiene rubber (PB) or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) through characterization of the blends' morphology, and on. the morphology and properties of binary blends of PP with EPT (EPT/PP) and ternary blends of PP, EPT, and polyethylene (PE) (EPT/PE/PP). Morphological structure of solution blends and the great improvement in low-temperature impact strength and other properties of the mechanical blends have shown the difference among EPT, PB, and SBR in compatibility with PP, the effectiveness of using EPT as PP's toughening agent, and the effect of EPT on EPT/PP blend as both toughening agent and compatibilizer. Addition of EPT to EPT/PP made interesting changes in morphology but no effect on properties was observed.

    Notes: By means of infrared internal reflection spectroscopy we measured the time dependence of the surface concentration of stearic acid molecules over a well defined region of the surface. The molecules were diffusing into this region from a source comprising a compressed monolayer or bulk crystalline material outside the field of view. By these measurements in conjunction with solutions to the diffusion equations we determined the diffusion coefficient Ds of stearic acid on the (0001) plane of α-alumina. We also determined the dependence of Ds upon the amount of water coadsorbed on the surface. When the surface was free of reversibly adsorbed water, Ds had a value of about 2 × 10-7 cm2/s. As the surface coverage of coadsorbed water increased to about a monolayer Ds increased to a maximum value of about 4 × 10-5 cm2/s. With further additions of surface water Ds then decreased and became less than 10-8 cm2/s at coverages slightly less than about two monolayers. In the region of its maximum value the temperature dependence of Ds indicated an activation energy for the diffusion process of about 26 kcal/mole.

    Notes: Slugging experiments were performed in a semicircular Plexiglas column 5.6 m in height to study the effect of an expanded section on slugging. The bottom section of the column (3.05 m long) is 28.6 cm in inside diameter and the expanded section 40.6 cm. Both the bed height and the fluidizing velocity were varied during the study, and the results were successfully correlated with a theoretically derived equation. The implications in designing a bed with an expanded section to reduce the slugging effectively are also discussed.

    Notes: A pore-diffusion model is developed for temperature swing separation in a packed bed of sorbent. The model is applied to interpret experimental data for separation of H2 of CH4 in a packed bed of activated carbon operated in the temperature swing mode, at pressures up to 5.52 MPa. Experimental results on the effects of total pressure, particle size, adsorption temperature, and flow rate on separation efficiency compared favorably to the model predictions. The importance of pore diffusion in separation has been clearly demonstrated.
