Description: The purpose of this research was to study designs for a far-infrared polarimeter for SOFIA that would greatly surpass the performance of the earlier polarimeter, Stokes, used on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Specifically we wished to gain the sensitivity to observe much fainter objects, to provide a choice of passbands, to reduce systematic errors, and to improve the efficiency. All of these objectives were successfully addressed. The gain in sensitivity will be achieved in part by the superior capabilities of SOFIA but to an even greater extent by the incorporation of new-technology detector arrays. We are developing superconducting transition-edge detectors using the "pop-up" design conceived by Dr. Harvey Moseley. The choice of passbands is achieved by providing three alternative optical paths, each with its own spectral filter, half-wave plate, and pupil tens. A new investigation has shown that multiwavelength observations provide an essential feature of far-infrared polarimetry. The principal source of systematic errors in observations of extended objects has been unknown polarization in the reference beams. We have developed a strategy for estimating these errors.

Description: This report summarizes work made possible by NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The results of the work have appeared in over 80 papers. The publications fall in three main areas: instrumentation, observations, and analysis. Although there is considerable overlap between these categories it will be convenient to group them separately.

Description: NASA selected the OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission as the third New Frontiers mission in May 2011 [I]. The mission name is an acronym that captures the scientific objectives: Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer. OSIRIS-REx will characterize near-Earth asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36, which is both the most accessible carbonaceous asteroid [2,3] and one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids known [4]. The primary objective of the mission is to return a pristine sample from this bod, to advance our understanding of the generation, evolution, and maturation of regolith on small bodies.

Description: In this paper we present a complete summary of the data obtained with the far-infrared polarimeter, Stokes, in flights of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. We have observed 12 Galactic clouds and have made over 1100 individual measurements at 100 micrometer and 60 micrometer. The median P for all of the 60 micrometer and 100 micrometer measurements is 3.6% and 2.6% respectively. We also present flux maps obtained simultaneously with the polarimetry.

Description: The purpose of this grant was to complete the analysis of data obtained with the polarimeter, Hertz, on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. This has enabled us to complete and publish two student theses (one on Sgr B2 and one on Orion) and a paper on the first results on the far-infrared polarization-spectrum. In addition it has enabled us to analyze data for two additional papers (one on W3 and the other a complete archive of KAO polarization data) which have reached the stage of complete drafts but still need checking and editing before final submission.
