Description: A single daily "surge" in pituitary luteinizing hormone release was observed in ovariectomized-estrogen-treated hamsters expressing an intact circadian rhythm of locomotor activity. In contrast, two luteinizing hormone surges occurred within a single 24-hour period in hamsters whose activity rhythm had dissociated or "split" into two distinct components. These observations indicate that both behavioral and endocrine circadian rhythms are regulated by the same multioscillator system, which seems to be composed of at least two distinct circadian oscillators.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Swann, J M -- Turek, F W -- HD-07068/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- HD-09885/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- K04 HD-00249/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1985 May 17;228(4701):898-900.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4001926" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The ability to generate a diverse immune response depends on the somatic assembly of genes that encode the antigen-binding portions of immunoglobulin molecules. In this article, we discuss the mechanism and control of these genomic rearrangement events and how aspects of this process are involved in generating the primary antibody repertoire.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Alt, F W -- Blackwell, T K -- Yancopoulos, G D -- AI-20047/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- CA-40427/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1987 Nov 20;238(4830):1079-87.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biochemistry, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York, NY 10032.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3317825" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Remarkable similarities in the intracellular and genetic events occur when lymphoid and hematopoietic cells are exposed to their specific growth factors. The interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor, whose cell-surface expression is an absolute requirement for the growth and differentiation of lymphoid cells, was detected on various nonlymphoid hematopoietic cell types in this study. Cell lines consisting either of granulocyte-macrophage precursors or mast cells, which are dependent on interleukin-3 (IL-3) for their growth, expressed high levels of the IL-2 receptor on their surface. Analysis of the binding characteristics of these receptors with 125I-labeled recombinant IL-2 revealed that only receptors with low affinity for IL-2 were present on these cells. Addition of purified recombinant IL-3 to these cell lines led to an increase in IL-2 receptor gene expression within 1 hour in isolated nuclei. This IL-3--induced increase in the number of IL-2 receptors on the cell surface is maximal within 24 hours. Addition of 10,000 units of IL-2 to these cells had no apparent effect on their growth or differentiation. The presence of the receptor with only low affinity for IL-2 on hematopoietic cells and the regulation by IL-3 suggest that this receptor is involved in some important metabolic event in hematopoiesis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Birchenall-Sparks, M C -- Farrar, W L -- Rennick, D -- Kilian, P L -- Ruscetti, F W -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1986 Jul 25;233(4762):455-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3088729" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description / Table of Contents: With the help of a novel test method, diffusion-coefficients of ammonia were determined in 22 transparent, filmforming polymers at room temperature. This method is based upon the UV-VIS-spectroscopically followable reversible reaction of ammonia with 4-nitro phenol to a Meisenheimer-complex.The dye-building reaction was studied and analyzed by a simple approximation of the diffusion equation. Diffusion coefficients obtained are in good agreement with the few available data in the literature. The dependence of the NH3-diffusion coefficients upon the polymer structure corresponds with the obtained diffusion coefficients, which are known for permanent gases. The described method allows the measurement of diffusion coefficients, which are distinguished up to three orders of magnitude, without any problem (ethylcellulose: 1,07 · 10-7 cm2 · s-1; poly(vinylalcohol): 0.9 · 10-10 cm2 · s-1).

Notes: The binding curves of various aminoacridines on calf thymus DNA have been determined by a spectrophotometric method. The dominant role of electrostatic forces in the interaction has been confirmed by the effect of ionic strength. Side chain and ring substituents in the aminoacridines do not inhibit binding, since this decreases in the order: acranil 〉 neomonacrin 〉 atebrin 〉 9-aminoacridine ∼ proflavine 〉 9-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridine (THA). The last named shows the effect of diminishing the flat area of the rings in the aminoacridines. The shape of the binding curves of proflavine, 9-aminoacridine, and THA on thermally denatured DNA show that about 30-50% more binding sites are available to these cations on denatured DNA than on native DNA, but that the binding constants are the same. These observations are discussed in relation to the intercalation and other models for the interaction. It is concluded that exact and complete intercalation is not a necessary condition of strong binding and that other, less regular, models, in which the positive ring nitrogens of the acridines are close to the DNA phosphates and the acridine rings partially interact with the DNA base rings, are probably more consistent with the effect of denaturation of DNA on the binding curves which are characteristic of the interaction in solution.

Notes: The intrinsic, viscosities at zero shear rate of defined complexes of proflavine, 9-aminoacridine, and 9-amino-l,2,3,4-tetrahydroaeridine with calf thymus DNA have been determined at, various ionic strengths by means of rotating cylinder viscometers. By controlled adjustment, of the composition of the mixtures, the amount of bound acridine (r moles/g.-atom DNA phosphorus) was maintained constant at different dilutions. The intrinsic viscosities of the complexes increased with r up to r values (ca. 0.16-0.20) corresponding to the end of the process of strong binding of the acridinium cations. However, complex formation between the acridines and thermally denatured DNA caused either a marked decrease in viscosity (at the low ionic strengths of 0.0015 and 0.005) or no change at all (ionic strength 0.1). These results are discussed in the light of presently available hydrodynamic theories relating the intrinsic, viscosity of DNA to its molecular extension.

Notes: The physical properties of a new class of ionomers comprising a semirigid polyphenylene ether backbone were investigated. The material was studied principally in the form of films of ca. 150 μm micrometers in thickness. The study focused on material of 600 equivalent weight. Torsion pendulum results showed a significant increase in the glass transition temperature of the ionomer relative to that of its ester precursor but gave no evidence of ionic clustering. Stress-strain studies performed both in water and in 20% KOH solution at 80°C indicated that the mechanical properties of the material remain stable under these conditions. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to investigate both the high temperature behavior and the water uptake of the ionomer films. The behavior of this ionomer at high temperature and in an alkaline solution is of particular interest in view of the possible use of these films as separators in an alkaline electrolysis cell.

Description / Table of Contents: Avoidance of Chloride Induced Transgranular Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless Steels by InhibitorsThe possibility to avoide chloride induced transgranular SCC of stainless steels with higher contents of chromium and nickel with the aid of organic inhibitors is shown. This method is successful as well in boiling aqueous solutions with high chloride concentration (open system) as in closed systems (higher temperature and pressure) with low chloride contents.
