Beschreibung: Eta Carinae may be the most massive and luminous star in the Galaxy and is suspected to be a massive, colliding wind binary system. The CHANDRA X-ray observatory has obtained a calibrated, high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the star uncontaminated by the nearby extended soft X-ray emission. Our 89 ksec CHANDRA observation with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) shows that the hot gas near the star is non-isothermal. The temperature distribution may represent the emission on either side of the colliding wind bow shock, effectively 'resolving' the shock. If so, the pre-shock wind velocities are approximately 700 and 1800 km/s in our analysis, and these velocities may be interpreted as the terminal velocities of the winds from 71 Carinae and from the hidden companion star. The forbidden-to-intercombination line ratios for the He-like ions of S, Si, and Fe are large, indicating that the line forming region lies far from the stellar photosphere. The iron fluorescent line at 1.93 angstroms, first detected by ASCA, is clearly resolved from the thermal iron line in the CHANDRA grating spectrum. The Fe fluorescent line is weaker in our CHANDRA observation than in any of the ASCA spectra. The CHANDRA observation also provides the first high-time resolution lightcurve of the uncontaminated stellar X-ray emission from 77 Carinae and shows that there is no significant, coherent variability during the CHANDRA observation. The 77 Carinae CHANDRA grating spectrum is unlike recently published X-ray grating spectra of single massive stars in significant ways and is generally consistent with colliding wind emission in a massive binary.

Notizen: The ion-molecule reaction between six hexachlorobiphenyl positive molecular ions and ammonia in a triplequadrupole instrument to yield [M + NH3 - HCl]+. ions gives products whose abundances differ by at least an order of magnitude under uniform conditions. This reaction offers a way of distinguishing many isomers by a reaction that is different from the other demonstrated route, the loss of HCl from [M + O - Cl]- ions.

Notizen: The electron ionization mass spectra of 2-amino-4-(5-nitro-2-furyl)thiazole metabolites obtained from microsomal incubations and chemical syntheses were studied. The identities of the metabolites were established by chemical ionization, high resolution, and metastable measurements. The compounds studied showed multiple modes of cleavage, skeletal rearrangements and hydrogen back-transfer.

Notizen: The feasibility of using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) for analysis of polar and/or ionic analytes of interest to the pharmaceutical industry is described. Specifically, the analyses of cyclopsporin (a cyclic undecapeptide), several ionophores, and a group of fat-soluble vitamins are illustrated. The separation of group of fat-soluble vitamins is evaluated on two bonded stationary phases, DB-5 (95% dimethyl-5%-diphenylpolysiloxane) and DB-WAX (Carbowax 20M type, “bonded”). Lastly, a new restrictor technology known as a converging-diverging restrictor is described.

Notizen: The general topic of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is introduced, and historical aspects of its development are discussed. The physical properties of supercritical fluids, gases and liquids are tabulated. SFC is compared and contrasted with the classical forms of chromatography - gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The selectivity of SFC, GC, and HPLC are discussed and compared. Instrumentation employed for supercritical fluid chromatography is depicted. A wide variety of SFC applications are introduced. New examples of the use of SFC for analysis of a variety of complex oligomeric mixtures indcluding polypropylene glycol, polysiloxanes, fluorocarbon oligomers (i.e. -3M's fluoro-chemical surfactant Fluorad 171, and Kel-F) and high molecular weight normal alcohols are shown. The use of SFC for separation of mono-, di-, and triglycerides at low operating temperatures is described. Lastly, the use of SFC for separations of complex hydrocarbon mixtures from liquid fuels, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, synthetic alpha-olefins, and petroleum functional group separations are depicted.

Notizen: This paper describes the experimentally determined linear temperature programmed gas chromatographic retention behavior of hundreds of gasoline range hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons on a cross-linked 100% polydimethylsiloxane stationary phase. The retention indices of additional compounds which were not available as pure standards were measured in a synthetic gasoline after they had been positively identified by matching mass and infrared spectra. The experimentally determined retention information has been used to estimate the retention indices of additional compounds by extrapolation or interpolation of plots of carbon number against retention index of homologs.Isothermally determined Kovats retention indices of compounds measured on 100 % polydimethylsiloxane have been taken from the literature and converted to linear temperature programmed retention indices using the method of Guan et al [11]. For many of these compounds, an experimentally determined linear temperature programmed retention index was measured: agreement between experimental and converted values was excellent. In total, retention indices are presented for 480 compounds, including all possible alkylbenzenes containing ten or fewer carbon atoms, and over 150 monoenes and dienes. The effect of column pressure and the average linear velocity of the helium carrier gas on retention index and order of elution is described and discussed.

Notizen: The separation of mixed mono-, di-, and triglycerides by capillary supercritical fluid chromatography is described. The separations were performed at low operating temperatures, using a carbon dioxide mobile phase, a conventional flame ionization detector, and two different stationary phases, DB-5 (95% dimethyl-(5%)-diphenylpolysiloxane) and DB-225 (50% cyanopropyl-methyl-(50%)-methylphenylpolysiloxane). Because the separations were performed at low operating temperatures, no thermal degradation of the glycerides was observed. Even under these mild operating conditions, trinervonin, a triglyceride having a molecular weight over 1100 amu, was readily eluted. When rapid pressure programming of the carbon dioxide mobile phase was employed, trinervonin was eluted in less than two minutes. On DB-5, the mono-, di-, and triglycerides eluted in order of increasing molecular weight. A graph of t′r (on DB-5) versus molecular weight is linear. When DB-225 was used as the stationary phase, triglycerides eluted in the order of increasing unsaturation. Thus, the order of elution on DB-225 was tristearin, triolein, trilinolein, and trilinolenin.

Notizen: This paper describes a quantitative technique for the determination of organic constituents in Fischer-Tropsch by-product waters. Temperature-programmed gas chromatography on derivatized bonded polar capillary columns provides the required separation that permits reliable quantitation of individual compounds. A preliminary combined gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric survey to identify the components present in Fischer-Tropsch by-product waters is presented. The elution order of 58 identified components is tabulated. Components identified in a typical Fischer-Tropsch by-product water include C1-C9 linear and branched alcohols, C3—C8 ketones, C2—C6 carboxylic acids, and C2—C4 linear aldehydes.
