Description: A biological study was conducted to find out about reproduction and feeding of G. lacustris in Neur Lake from northwest mountains of Iran. Plankton diversity, hydro-chemical factors and substrate characteristic were recorded monthly. Findings showed that reproduction period of this species was short and limited to May and the mean brood size was 10.2 ± 5.3 eggs per female. The hydro-chemical analysis showed the eutrophic characteristic of Neur Lake in which the average of total organic matter was 3.7 ± 3.0 percent. The phyla representative Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta were observed throughout the study and Chlorophyta was the dominant group. Three zooplankton phyla Rotatoria, Ciliophora and Copepoda were abundant respectively. Study on diet using gut content resulted in identification of 15 plankton genera with some resemblance to planktons of the lake.

Description: In the present study, some ecological factors were studied for Amphipoda at different depths. The Shannon, Margalef, and Hill indices were used to determine the species diversity, richness and evenness, respectively. In addition, the association and niche overlap values were estimated. Indices of species richness and diversity were highest at 50 and 100m depths, respectively. The ordination of depths show that the highest dissimilarity was at 20m depth and the lowest dissimilarity at 100 meter. Results of interspecific association and specific overlap of species show that only a few species could have similar ecological requirements. Results show that Paraniphargoides derzhavini with Niphargoides grimmi and Stenogammarus compersus with Amathilina cristata had low associations. Corophium spinulosum with Corophium nobile and Stenogammarus compersus with Paraniphargoides derzhavini, however, had high associations.

Description: The study was conducted in Anzali Lagoon (37 ̊ 28 N , 45 ̊ 25 E) in 38 stations during April 1994 to March 1996. In this study 13 biogroups were separated and counted. The abundance of most biogroups was very low, while that of the groups Chironomidae and Tubificidae were high and the abundance of the biogroup Amphipoda, Culicidae and Ephemeroptera was lower than the mentioned groups. Tubificidae was seen in all stations and all months of the year and its maximum density was 3740 organisms in each square meter. After Tubificidae the Chironomidae family had the second level of density. The total percentage of the organic substances of the bottom had not considerable changes in different month and its mean amount differed from 2.57% in the site of breakwater and the sea to 27.1% (maximum) in central portion of the lagoon. No considerable relation was observed between the amount of organic matter and the abundance of benthos in the region. According to the obtained results, Tubificidae and Chironomidae families showed little correlation with the bottom organic substances. The correlation of biogroup Ephemeroptera with the organic substances was greater than that of the 2 mentioned groups. Using the cluster type analysis and dendrograms made clear that the relation of biogroups Culicidae, Ephemeroptera and Tubificidae with the bottom organic substances was more than that of Chironomidae. Culicidae and Chironomidae showed close correlation with silt and clay of the bottom, but Tubificidae was more adaptable with the bottom fine particles.

Description: Use and enrichment of live food resource in fish farms have been interested and highly demanded. Crustacean are one of the important groups. The Pontogammarus maeoticus dominated in southern Caspian Sea shore with a high abundance. This study was designed in order to adaptation and usage of amphipoda in fish culture ponds. The first part have been surveyed the laboratory experiments including of; to increasing and developing of P.maeoticus in 200 litter container, the effects of salinity on growth and survival of amphipods in many aquariums, the culture of common carp with amphipods and growth determination of them. Chemical composition analysis of P.maeoticus and carps fed by amphipods in compare to cultured carps from ordinary ponds. Due to concern about common healthy the heavy metal concentration has been measured in P. maeoticus, carp which were fed by amphipods and the cultured carps in earth ponds. In second phase; the adaptation of two amphipods species, P. maeoticus and Obesogammarus acuminatus was studied in fish ponds where some cages with sandy soft substrate had been provided for amphipoda replacement. Also a small surface of ponds surrounded by net and covered by Azola plant, a habitat suitable for to putting of O. acuminatus. Production of amphipoda had not the successfully results in large tanks. Aquariums with Caspian sea water had the prosper results where the specimens were breeding and developing properly, even though in some aquarium with freshwater increased the amphipods number. The chemical composition had not significant difference between two kind of cultured carps while the organic component in amphipoda had a high quality. The better quality of cultured carp by amphipod diet have been confirmed by organoleptic test. The results of heavy metal measurement in amphipoda showed a high concentration which some of them were transmitted to cultured carps. Result of amphipoda replacement in cage was not satisfy and the specimens were died after some days. According to hydro-chemical parameters the oxygen poorness and high trophy levels were the affective factor to abolish of specimens in cages. It seems that there are many type of P.maeoticus that can be adapted in different salinities. The molecular differentiation should be investigated to choose the suitable type of this spices for utilization in freshwater fish ponds. In other hand it can be used in fish culture ponds that will be supplied by brackish water.

Description: A study was conducted to determine , feeding , reproduction in 12 stations in the Caspian Sea basin of Iran including Anzali wetland (lagoon), Ghorigol wetland, Neor lake , south Caspian coastal water (Iranian of shore), and several springs in Alborz mountains In addition sampling of Plankton and physical and chemical factors of the water body were also done in all stations. Special aquariums were designed to test the acclimation of the 7 amphipoda in pond culture. This process was performed from march 2001 to Feb 2003. The finding showed that while reproduction of Gammarus lacustris and Gammarus paricrenatus were only about 3 months , that Gammarus komareki lasted throught the year. From diet studies of intestine content have been showed that there is not a correlation between abundance and diversity of plankton with habitat for all species, except about Pontogarnrnarus maeoticus and P. borceae from Kelachi coast that had a high plankton abundance. Gammarus aequicauda (37.75 ± 31.04) and Obesogammarus acuminatus (49.07 ± 40.4) had the maximum of average eggs production while G. komareki had the lowest clutch sizes with mean about 7-8 eggs. Species tolerance to changes in environmental factors (Physical and chemical variation) were limited in the springs while those off coastal water species and Obesogammarus acuminatus were wider. In aquarium (laboratory) study, it was found that although Gammarus lacustris showed some growth but did not reproduce. Gammarus paricrenatus, in later stage of study, reproduced and grow in length during most experiment period. Although Gammarus komareki survived and a little active life, but was not able to acclimate itself to laboratory condition. The findings showed that four species P. maeoticus, P. borceae, O. acuminatus, and G. aequcauda , seems to be good candidate for acclimation study in warm water fish farms. Their living in the ponds can be enhanced by some limited alteration in substrate structure (P. maeoticus, P. borceae), presence of submerged aquatic plants (O. acuminatus) and higher water salinity (more than 2 ppt) for G. aequcauda..

Description: Records of 185 amphipod samples taken in Iran, both in the brackish Caspian Sea and in fresh waters belonging to the Caspian drainage system and the Central Basin. Twenty-nine species are represented (25 Gammaridae, 1 Pontoporeiidae, 1 Gammaracanthidae, 2 Corophiidae), of which 1 species of Obesogammarus, and 6 species of Gammarus (all from inland waters), 1 species of the new genus Scytaelina, and 1 species of Derzhavinella (both from the brackish Caspian Sea) are new to science, Obesogammarus turcarum, Gammarus imberbus, and G. syriacus are new to Iranian continental waters, whereas Gammarus aequicauda and Pontogammarus borceae are new to the Caspian Sea.
