Electrophilic Substitution of Cyclopropylbenzenes - Reactivity and Orientation2)Cyclopropyl substituents exert a characteristic influence on the reactivity and orientation in electrophilic aromatic substitution. Bromination as a reaction with a late transition state and high selectivity is influenced mainly by the stabilization of α-complex intermediates which crucially depends on whether the molecule can adopt the bisected conformation. Thus, the cyclopropyl benzenes 1a, 3a, 6a react much more readily with bromine than the corresponding (l-methylcyclopropyl) compounds 1b, 3b, 6b; substitution occurs exclusively at the p-position. Cyclopropylbenzenes for which the σ-complex is less stabilized suffer competitive attack at the three-membered ring. As a reaction with an early transition state, nitration does not exhibit this dependence on the conformation of the cyclopropyl benzenes, hence 1a, 3a, 6a and 1b, 3b, 6b show comparable reactivity in the nitration reaction. Pre-orientation of the attacking species, NO2⊕, towards the cyclopropyl group is held responsible for the fact that o-substitution is clearly favoured.
Notes:
