Notizen: Abstract Soil additions of Cl−, as NaCl, over the 0 to 400 ppm Cl− range did not affect germination forAndropogon scoparius. Height and top dry weight were significantly reduced by 300 ppm soil added Cl−. Although not conclusive, these results did indicate that growth and germination effects reported for Cd++, added as CdCl2, are probably due to Cd++ rather than to a Cl− or salt effect. Reported Pb++ effects, where Pb++ is added as PbCl2, however may be at least partially due to a Cl− or salt effect.

Notizen: Abstract Seed of six plant species native to a heavy metal contaminated urban site in northwestern Indiana was collected and grown in soil from the urban site and similar soil collected from a relatively uncontaminated rural site. The rural soil was amended with CdCl2. Plant tissue and soils were analyzed for Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu. Soil extractable Cd concentrations increased with increasing soil-added Cd levels, a larger proportion of the added Cd becoming extractable as the soil addition level increases. Soil Cd additions also affected the levels of extractable Zn, Pb, and Cu. Soil extractable Cd levels were not, however, influenced by the plant species grown in the soil. Differences were noted between the two soils for extractable Cd concentrations, but were much smaller than the differences noted in plant Cd concentrations between the two soils. Plant Cd levels increased linearly with soil Cd addition levels. Composites had higher Cd concentrations than other herbs or grasses tested. Total Cd content of above-ground plant biomass also increased with soil Cd addition levels, but with a non-linear, upper limit type response.Rudbeckia hirta, a composite, had similar Cd concentrations in both top and root biomass, indicating that for this species Cd is not immobilized in the root systems as for other species.

Beschreibung: The real and imaginary parts of spectral matrices of magnetic field fluctuations near 4 and 5 AU are used separately to generate estimates of hydromagnetic wave normal directions over the frequency range 0.00001 to 0.01 Hz in the spacecraft frame. Both procedures suggest the predominance of the Alfven mode over the fast and slow MHD modes among transverse magnetic field perturbations. Both procedures also show that the Alfven mode is more common among transverse perturbations at 4 AU than at 5 AU. Statistical techniques are for estimating uncertainties in computed wave normal directions and it is concluded that the real parts of the spectral matrices are more useful than the imaginary parts in specifying wave normals at times of magnetic quiet in the solar wind near 4 and 5 AU.

Beschreibung: Interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations near 4 and 5 AU are investigated on the basis of Pioneer 10 and 11 vector magnetic field measurements in order to identify extant wave modes and propagation directions as functions of frequency in the range 0.00004 to 0.009 Hz. Analysis of the approximately 500 spectral matrices as functions of frequency obtained from each spacecraft indicates the distributions of maximum variance directions to be peaked along the normal to the plane of the minimum variance direction and the mean magnetic field, as would be expected for a planar, small-amplitude Alfven wave with a minimum variance direction close to the wave vector. It is thus inferred that single small-amplitude Alfven waves are occasionally present in the temporal and frequency bands analyzed, however waves with wave vectors not well approximated by the minimum variance direction, Alfven wave ensembles, finite-amplitude waves and nonplanar fluctuations may also be present. Observations are also noted to suggest the predominance of the Alfven mode over the fast and slow modes, however do not support theoretical models of outward propagating plane Alfven waves of solar origin.

Beschreibung: The Pioneer 10 data concerning the heliocentric radial variation of the interplanetary magnetic field are examined. Incorporating the systematic increase in solar wind velocity observed during the mission leads to much improved agreement between the usual Parker Archimedean spiral and the data. The effects of correlations between short-period fluctuations of speed and azimuthal field are discussed. It is concluded that during the period under study they did not substantially affect the average magnetic field.
