    Description: The results of Einstein X-ray observation and simultaneous optical observations of the cataclysmic variable TT Arietis extending over several binary orbits are reported. Evidence is found for correlations between the X-ray and optical variability of TT Ari on three distinct time scales: the 3.3 hour variability that has been associated with the orbital period of the star, the about 1000 s time scale of the irregular flickering activity, and the time scale of quasi-coherent oscillations which have periods of order 10 s. There is a modulation of the X-ray flux with a period consistent with the orbital period of approximately 200 minutes, but there is no apparent modulation of the X-ray spectrum. The optical flux is modulated with a similar period and may lag the X-ray modulation by about 0.1 in phase. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted by a thermal bremsstrahlung plus Gaunt factor model. The results suggest that the hard X-ray emission may be produced in a corona above and below the inner accretion disk.

    Description: Observations in the X-ray, UV, visible, IR and radio regions of the BL Lac object Mrk 501 made over the course of two months are reported. The measurements were made with the A2 experiment on HEAO 1 (X-ray), the SWP and LWR cameras on IUE (UV), the 5-m Hale telescope (visible), the 2.5-m telescope at Mount Wilson (IR), the NRAO 92-m radio telescope at Green Bank (4750 MHz) and the 46-m radio telescope at the Algonquin Observatory (10275 and 10650 MHz). The quasi-simultaneously observed spectral slope is found to be positive and continuous from the X-ray to the UV, but to gradually flatten and possibly turn down from the mid-UV to the visible; the optical-radio emission cannot be accounted for by a single power law. The total spectrum is shown to be compatible with a synchrotron self-Compton emission mechanism, while the spectrum from the visible to the X-ray is consistent with synchrotron radiation or inverse-Compton scattering by a hot thermal electron cloud. The continuity of the spectrum from the UV to the X-ray is noted to imply a total luminosity greater than previous estimates by a factor of 3-4.

    Description: Methods of obtaining information about the geometry of X-ray burster systems from simultaneous optical and X-ray observations are discussed, and such simultaneous observations of 4U/MXB 1636-53 are reported. The physical idea of an optical burst being due to reprocessing of an X-ray burst in material in the vicinity of the compact object is discussed. The resulting modification of the X-ray burst signal is described in terms of an optical response function. Delay and smearing due to radiative processes are discussed along with those due to the geometry. For 4U/MXB 1636-53, the estimated delay is 2.5 seconds, the smearing is less than four seconds, and the maximum temperature of the reprocessing region is about 75,000 K. The projected area of the reprocessing region is about 6 x 10 to the 21st square cm. The neutron star is about 1.4 solar masses, the radius of the accretion disk is greater than 1.5 lt-sec, and the mass of the Roche lobe filling companion star is less than 2.0 solar masses, corresponding to a binary period between about one and ten hours.

    Description: Observations of simultaneous optical and X-ray bursts from 4U/MXB 1636-53 were made using the Hakucho burst monitor system and optical telescopes at the European Southern Observatory during 1979 and 1980. The six best cases among the 10 coinciding observations are analyzed in terms of a model in which the optical emission is the result of reprocessing of X-rays (through blackbody heating). From this analysis, the temperature (spatially averaged) and size of a reprocessor, and the smearing and delay of the optical bursts are obtained. For the maximum temperatures of the optical reprocessor, the values differ from burst to burst, ranging from about 3 x 10 to the 4th to about 10 to the 5th K. The present analysis suggests that the size of the reprocessor varies by a factor of a few. For the smearing of the optical bursts an upper limit of a few seconds is derived. The most important result of this analysis is that the delay times are not the same for all bursts. The possible constraints which these results put on a low-mass binary model of this burst source are discussed.

    Description: High resolution spectra of the interstellar NaI D2 absorption line have been obtained for seven B-type stars aligned with an extensive filamentary nebula. Very fine filaments have now been found on a high contrast print of a deep H-alpha and forbidden N II plate, making identification as a fossilized remnant probable but uncertain. The inferred age is about 20,000 yr, the distance less than 200 pc, the diameter less than 17.5 pec, but the initial energy is only about 2 x 10 to the 47th erg.

    Description: The development of pair-photon cascades initiated by high energy electrons above a pulsar polar cap is simulated numerically. The calculation uses the energy of the primary electron, the magnetic field strength, and the period of rotation as parameters, and follows the curvature radiation emitted by the primary, the conversion of this radiation to e(+)e(-) pairs in the intense fields, and the quantized synchrotron radiation by the secondary pairs. A recursive technique allows the tracing of an indefinite number of generations using a Monte Carlo method. Gamma-ray and pair spectra are calculated for cascades in different parts of the polar cap and with different acceleration models. It is found that synchrotron radiation from secondary pairs makes an important contribution to the gamma-ray spectrum above 25 MeV, and that the final gamma-ray and pair spectra are insensitive to the height of the accelerating region, as long as the acceleration of the primary electrons is not limited by radiation reaction.

    Description: A new series of vibrational bands is predicted which arises from transitions between the lowest electron states of the triplet and singlet states of homonuclear C2. The predictions are useful for C2 identifications and for disentangling congested low resolution spectra that characterize new observations. Predictions are also made for Mulliken, Phillips, and Ballik-Ramsay band sequences, and all calculations are made with the assumed molecular constants and computational methods of KSO-II.

    Description: Within the uncertainties, the P-alpha line profile is the same as those of H-beta, L-alpha, and C IV. It is therefore contended that if current models of broad-line-emitting clouds in quasars are correct, then the similarity of the P-alpha line profile to the L-alpha profile argues against a velocity field dominated by radial inflow or outflow. It is noted, however, that if the cloud motions are predominantly due to radial inflow or outflow, then the clouds must radiate more isotropically in L-alpha then current models predict. The observed similarity of the line profiles of P-alpha at 1.875 microns and of C IV at 1550 A leads to the conclusion that there is no differential reddening caused by dust between clouds moving at different velocities within the broad line region of 3C 273.

    Description: The production of electron-positron pairs by single photons in magnetic fields 10 to the twelth power G was investigated in detail for photon energies near threshold as well as for the asymptotic limit of high photon energy. The exact attenuation coefficient, which is derived and then evaluated numerically, is strongly influenced by the discrete energy states of the electron and positron. Near threshold, it exhibits a sawtooth pattern as a function of photon energy, and its value is significantly below that predicted by the asymptotic expression for the attenuation coefficient. The energy distributions of the created pair are computed numerically near threshold and analytic expressions are derived in the asymptotic limit. These results indicate that as field strength and photon energy increase, it becomes increasingly probable for the pair to divide the photon energy unequally. This effect, as well as the threshold behavior of the attenuation coefficient, could have important consequences for pulsar models.

    Description: The central component of the radio galaxy Cygnus A has been observed in several (very long baseline interferometry) experiments between 1975 and 1979, and the results have been combined to derive a model for the brightness distribution. Some 65% of the nuclear emission appears to come from a compact core. The remaining flux density comes from a more extended region (or regions) up to 4 or 5 mas away lying along a position angle near 100 deg, which is close to that of the extended lobes. Evidence that compact central components reflect the collimation and transport of energy to the outer lobes of radio galaxies is discussed, and several interpretations of the observed asymmetries are considered.
