Description / Table of Contents: Poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid chloride), crosslinked with divinylbenzene isomers reacted with 3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl benzoate (2a) in various mole ratios. After saponification sulfo groups containing redox resins of restricted swelling capacity were obtained. 2a reacted with ethylenesulfonic acid chloride only to form a benzo[f]-[1,4,5]-oxathiazepine derivative 5. The condensation of 2,6-bis(chlorosulfonyl)-1,4-phenylene diacetate (8b) and of 1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid chloride (8c), respectively, with 3,5-diamino-4-hydroxyphenyl benzoate (9e) led only to oligomers.

Notes: Ultraviolet absorption and dichroism measurements on oriented films of calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) at varying degrees of hydration show a structural hysteresis which occurs within a relative humidity of 0 to 65% RH. This hysteresis is interpreted on the basis of a model which assumes the existence of structure-stabilizing hydrogen water bridges in the DNA double helix.

Notes: Networks containing both flexible segments and rigid structures were synthesized on the basis of bisphenol A novolacs and diglycidylether of butanediol using imidazole as an accelerator. A stoichiometric ratio between epoxy groups and phenolic groups of the novolacs leads to networks with methylene bridges as network junctions. In contrast to this, the same reaction with bisphenol A leads to completely soluble products. The glass transition temperature of this soluble material is considerably lower than the glass transition temperature of the networks. Increasing content of methylene bridges in the novolacs leads to an increase of the glass transition temperature of the networks and to a decrease of the δcp value at the glass transition. Furthermore, epoxy excess leads to networks with rubber-structure of the bisphenol A novolac used in the reaction with the diglycidylether. It was found that conformations with intramolecular hydrogen bondings exist between phenolic hydroxyl groups, which considerably influence the reactivity of the novolac with the epoxy group. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The polymerization of ethylene with Ziegler-Natta catalysts in the presence of carbon black has shown three characteristic features both with a heterogeneous catalyst, AlBu3—TiCl4, and with a soluble catalyst, Cl2Ti(C5H5)2—AlEt2Cl. They are, in order of increasing importance: reactivity of the organoaluminum derivatives with surface chemical groups of the carbon black, adsorption of a certain amount of organoaluminum compounds on the carbon black surface, and influence of the specific surface of carbon black, which controls the dispersion degree of the catalytic system. Furthermore, it was possible to obtain polyethylene by this procedure, containing different amounts and different types of carbon black.

Description: Substantiating data developed by a NASA-industry team (NIT) for subsequent NASA decisions on the 'right' set of manned transportation elements needed for human access to space are discussed. Attention is given to the framework for detailed definition of these manned transportation elements. Identifying and defining architecture evaluation criteria, i.e., attributes, specified the amount and type of data needed for each concept under consideration. Several architectures, each beginning with today's transportation systems, were defined using representative systems to explore future options and address specific questions currently being debated. The present solutions emphasize affordability, safety, routineness, and reliability. Key issues associated with current business practices were challenged and the impact associated with these practices quantified.

Description: Attention is given to the Manned Transportation System (MTS) Study, initiated to help identify the 'right' transportation system architectures needed for human access to space. A listing of the requirements used for this study and the rationale behind them are given. Attributes allow comparison of elements that meet the requirements and the 'needs' (mission model). The attributes include: safety, probability of mission success, funding profile, architecture cost risk, schedule confidence, dependability, availability, mission growth potential, environment, resiliency, and alternate access. The attributes need to be measurable, to have repeatable calculations and well-defined assumptions, to have their weight determined relative to other attributes, and to be a discriminator. The process used to determine the attributes, which involved the MTS team forum and some of the quality function deployment techniques, is discussed.

Description: The Manned Transportation System (MTS) Study has constructed a comprehensive set of transportation architectures, using current and possible vehicle systems to address specifically a series of considerations which focus and guide what the future transportation architectures should be. Payload manifesting ground rules are presented to illustrate the present approach in establishing flight rates from the MTS mission models. Manned system flight rates and relative personnel safety characteristics differences are presented.
