    Description: This paper analyzes the tasks and problem solving methods used by an engineer in constructing a failure management expert system from design information about the device to te diagnosed. An expert test engineer developed a trouble-shooting expert system based on device design information and experience with similar devices, rather than on specific expert knowledge gained from operating the device or troubleshooting its failures. The construction of the expert system was intensively observed and analyzed. This paper characterizes the knowledge, tasks, methods, and design decisions involved in constructing this type of expert system, and makes recommendations concerning tools for aiding and automating construction of such systems.

    Description: Substantiating data developed by a NASA-industry team (NIT) for subsequent NASA decisions on the 'right' set of manned transportation elements needed for human access to space are discussed. Attention is given to the framework for detailed definition of these manned transportation elements. Identifying and defining architecture evaluation criteria, i.e., attributes, specified the amount and type of data needed for each concept under consideration. Several architectures, each beginning with today's transportation systems, were defined using representative systems to explore future options and address specific questions currently being debated. The present solutions emphasize affordability, safety, routineness, and reliability. Key issues associated with current business practices were challenged and the impact associated with these practices quantified.

    Description: A high pressure oxygen recharge system (HPORS), is being developed for application on board the Space Station. This electrolytic system can provide oxygen at up to 6000 psia without a mechanical compressor. The Hamilton standard HPORS based on a solid polymer electrolyte system is an extension of the much larger and succesful 3000 psia system of the U.S. Navy. Cell modules have been successfully tested under conditions beyond which spacecraft may encounter during launch. The control system with double redundancy and mechanical backups for all electronically controlled components is designed to ensure a safe shutdown.

    Description: Ascent, rendezvous and earth return are three operational mission sequences in the sample return phase of the Mars Rover Sample Return (MRSR) mission. In the conduct of the current study, several vehicles have been identified to enable the sample return phase of the mission. These elements are the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), the Earth Return Vehicle (ERV), the rendezvous and docking module (RDM), and the sample return capsule (SRC). The sample return elements, when combined with other elements performing the launch and delivery functions, form the basis of the MRSR system. This paper summarizes the significant mission aspects of the sample return phase, describes the Mars ascent and earth return scenario, illustrates the conceptual designs developed for the MAV, ERV, RDM, and SRC, and discusses the results of significant trade studies conducted.
