    Notes: Abstract The effects of iron limitation on growth, the composition and function of the respiratory chains, and gallium uptake inEscherichia coli have been studied. Decreasing the iron concentration in a defined medium using Chelex resin gave lower growth yields in both continuous culture and prolonged batch culture. In the former, ironlimited (entering [Fe]≤2.0 μM) cells exhibited diminished respiration rates, respiration-driven proton translocation quotients, and levels of non-haem iron and cytochromes. The cellular concentration of haemoproteinb-590 (a cytochromea 1-like hydroperoxidase) decreased 20-fold on iron limitation, whilst a CO-binding pigment with an absorption maximum in the dithionite-treated form near 500 nm appeared. Gallium(III) (9 μM) added to iron-limited, but not iron-sufficient, cultures diminished growth yields further; cells grown with low entering concentrations of iron took up less gallium than iron-sufficient cells. These results are attributed to the interference by gallium(III) with siderophore-mediated metal uptake. Gallium also stimulated iron uptake and was itself accumulated by iron-sufficient cells, suggesting that gallium(III) also affects the iron transport system(s) of low affinity.

    Notes: Abstract The role(s) of copper in a bacterial cytochrome oxidase of the aa 3-type was investigated by growth of Paracoccus denitrificans NCIB 8944, in batch and steady state continuous culture, in a medium from which the bulk of the copper had been extracted. In a medium containing approximately 0.02 μM copper, cellular copper content, cytochromes a+a 3 and cytochrome a 3 were reduced to 55%, 58% and 33% respectively of control values and there were also less marked decreases in cytochromes c+c 1 (to 85%) and a CO-binding b-type cytochrome, possibly cytochrome o (to 71%). Copper deficiency elicited in reduced minus oxidized difference spectra a shift to shorter wavelengths and narrowing of the band width of the α-band of the oxidase, and loss of a (negative) band near 830 nm attributable to CuA (the copper functionally associated with haem a in the oxidase complex). The oxidase in copper-deficient cells reacted with oxygen to form the oxy “Compound A” at rates similar to that in control cells but CO recombination to ferrous haem a 3 was slowed 4-fold in the copper deficient case. The results are interpreted as indicating loss of CuA and changes in the proportions of haems a and a 3 with retention of catalytic activity. Titrations of respiration rates with antimycin suggested that copper deficiency did not result in diversion of electron flux through an antimycin A-insensitive, cytochrome o-terminated branch of the respiratory chain.

    Notes: Summary The hemolytic activity of Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris is determined by common contiguous genes encoding synthesis (hly C, hly A) and specific secretion (hly B, hly D) of active hemolysin. Nevertheless, the hlyC-proximal DNA sequences directing production of the homologous hemolysins by the recombinant DNAs P. vulgaris pVU763-709 and E. coli pANN202-312 showed no extensive homology. Primer extension and S1 nuclease protection were used to define in the two sequences the 5′ termini of hly transcripts synthesized in vivo and thus to infer the active hly promoters sequences. The E. coli hly C upstream region contained three separate promotors directing in vivo hly transcription, while the corresponding transcription of the P. vulgaris hly operon originated from a single distinct promotor, the-35 and-10 sequences of which formed part of an inverted repeat sequence. Elevated hemolytic activity caused by upstream Tn5 insertions in pVU763-709 resulted from increased transcription from this promotor.

    Description: The morphology of lava flows is often taken as an indicator of the broad chemical composition of the lava, especially when interpreting extraterrestrial volcanoes using spacecraft images. The historical lavas of the active volcano Mount Etna in Sicily provide an excellent opportunity to examine the controls on flow field morphology. In this study only flow produced by flank eruptions after the middle of the 18th century are examined. The final form of a flow-field may be more indicative of the internal plumbing of the volcano, which may control such factors as the effusion, rate, duration of eruption, volume of available magma, rate of de-gassing, and lava rheology. Different flow morphologies on Etna appear to be a good indicator of differing conditions within the volcanic pile. Thus the spatial distribution of different flow types on an extraterrestrial volcano may provide useful information about the plumbing conditions of that volcano, rather than necessarily providing information on the composition of materials erupted.

    Description: The changes in stability and control characteristics encountered by a thrust reversing aircraft during its final approach, landing, and ground roll are described. These changes include a strong pitch-up accompanied by the loss of horizontal tail and aileron control effectiveness. The magnitude of reverser induced changes in ground effect are much larger than corresponding changes in free air. Some unexpected unsteady motions exhibited in wind tunnel by an aircraft model with reversers operating in ground proximity are also described. The cause of this oscillatory behavior was determined to be an unsteady interaction between the wall jets formed by impingement of reverser jets on the ground and the on-coming free stream. Time histories of rolling moments measured by the wind tunnel balance or support system were removed and frequencies were scaled by Strouhal number to full scale. Corrected time series were used to simulate the motion of a fighter aircraft with thrust reversers in ground effect. The simulation predicted large roll angles and nose down attitude at touchdown. Some phenomena of jet attachment to solid surfaces are discussed and areas for future research are recommended.

    Description: An overview of a new finite element method for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The discretization is based on entropy variables. The method is developed within the framework of a Petrov-Galerkin formulation. Two perturbations are added to the weighting function; one is a generalization of the SUPG operator and the other is designed to enhance shock capturing capability. The treatment of boundary conditions and the consistent calculation of boundary fluxes are addressed. Results of numerical tests are presented which confirm the robustness and wide applicability of the method.

    Description: The low speed aerodynamic performance characteristics of several advanced counterrotation pusher propeller configurations with cruise design Mach numbers of 0.72 and 0.80 were investigated in the NASA Low Speed Wind Tunnel. The tests were conducted at Mach numbers representative of the takeoff and landing flight regime. The investigation included: (1) the propeller performance characteristics over a range of blade angle settings and rotational speeds at a Mach number of 0.20; (2) the effect on the propeller performance of varying the axial rotor spacing and mismatching the power and rotational speeds on the propeller rotors; and (3) determining the reverse thrust performance characteristics at Mach numbers of 0.0, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20. The results of the investigation indicated that the overall low speed performance of the counterrotation propeller configurations was reasonable.

    Description: The low-speed aerodynamic performance characteristics of two advanced counterrotation pusher-propeller configurations with cruise design Mach numbers of 0.72 were investigated in the NASA Lewis 9- by 15-Foot Low-Speed Wind Tunnel. The tests were conducted at Mach number 0.20, which is representative of the aircraft take/off/landing flight regime. The investigation determined the effect of nonuniform inflow on the propeller performance characteristics for several blade angle settings and a range of rotational speeds. The inflow was varied by yawing the propeller mode to angle-of-attack by as much as plus or minus 16 degrees and by installing on the counterrotation propeller test rig near the propeller rotors a model simulator of an aircraft engine support pylon and fuselage. The results of the investigation indicated that the low-speed performance of the counterrotation propeller configurations near the take-off target operating points were reasonable and were fairly insensitive to changes in model angle-of-attack without the aircraft pylon/fuselage simulators installed on the propeller test rig. When the aircraft pylon/fuselage simulators were installed, small changes in propeller performance were seen at zero angle-of-attack, but fairly large changes in total power coefficient and very large changes of aft-to-forward-rotor torque ratio were produced when the propeller model was taken to angle-of-attack. The propeller net efficiency, though, was fairly insensitive to any changes in the propeller flowfield conditions near the take-off target operating points.

    Description: Thirty-six aluminous mare basalt fragments from breccia 14321 and other Apollo 14 basalts are statistically divided into two broad groups, comprising five subgroups, using La, Sm, and Yb data. Major element compositions, petrographic characteristics, and mineral compositions are similar for the five groups. However, there is an eight-fold increase in REE abundances from Group 5 to Group 1, with Group 1 having a REE pattern similar to KREEP. Groups 1 to 3 may be related by partial melting of a source similar to that proposed by Unruh et al. (1984) for feldspathic basalt 12038. However, Groups 4 and 5 cannot be as closely matched by larger degrees of partial melting of this source. Groups 1 to 4 could also be produced by assimilation of a KREEP component by a magma similar in composition to Group 5. Such a magma can be produced by partial melting of an olivine-orthopyroxene source that crystallized from a magma with chondritic relative REE abundances.
