Notes: Abstract We have studied the photolysis of molybdenum hexacarbonyl by focused excimer laser radiation. It was found that electronically excited Mo atoms detected in the focus region of a KrF laser are due to a direct two photon absorption transition. The upper limit of the energy for complete dissociation of Mo(CO)6 has been derived from these results. Two photon dissociation in the gas phase should be the dominant process at metal film deposition on substrates positioned perpendicularly and near to the focus. Adding buffer gases to the organometallic vapor particle formation was observed in the whole irradiated gas volume. The analysis of scattered He-Ne laser light yields information about the density and size of these particles. Some conclusions are drawn with respect to structured metal film deposition with high spatial selectivity.

Notes: Abstract We have deposited thin metal films of Mo and W with sub-μm lateral resolution using the photodissociation of the carbonyls by the frequency doubled radiation of an Arion laser at cw and ps-pulse operation, respectively. In both regimes similar curves are obtained for the intensity dependence of the deposition rate. No difference was observed for the lateral resolution using cw or ps-pulse irradiation. Measurements of the deposition rate as a function of the spot size indicate that the decomposition occurs in the adsorbed phase.

Notes: Abstract The multiphoton absorption of SF6 was investigated in supersonic molecular beams in dependence on the fluence and the wavelength of the CO2 laser. The temperatures of the SF6 molecules have been reduced using seeded beams of different concentrations. The experimental results are discussed on the basis of the known spectroscopic data of SF6 and provide some novel information about the spectral characteristics of the ir-multiphoton excitation of strongly cooled molecules in the collision-free case.

Notes: Abstract: Using 50 fs ( ∼ 2×1018 W/cm2) and 2 ps ( ∼ 5×1016 W/cm2) pulses from a Ti:Sa multi-TW laser at 800 nm wavelength large Xe-clusters ( 105...106 atoms per cluster) have been excited. Absolute yield measurements of EUV-emission in a wavelength range between 10 nm and 15 nm in combination with cluster target variation were carried out. The ps-laser pulse has resulted in about 30% enhanced and spatially more uniform EUV-emission compared to fs-laser excitation. Circularly polarized laser light instead of linear polarization results in enhanced emission which is probably caused by electrons gaining higher energies by the polarization dependent optical field ionization process. An absolute emission efficiency at 13.4 nm of up to 0.8% in 2π sr and 2.2% bandwidth has been obtained.

Notes: Abstract The formation of protonated and unprotonated ammonia cluster ions is studied by femtosecond two colour two photon pump-probe techniques applied to (NH3) n and (ND3) n clusters withn up to 8. The fourth harmonic (∼ 200 nm, 6.2 eV, 160 fs) of a Ti: Sapphire laser pulse is used to excite the clusters in a state corresponding to theà state of NH3 while the third harmonic (267 nm, 4.65 eV) is used for the subsequent ionisation step. Employing a combination of the optical Bloch equations for the excitation process and rate equations for the cluster dynamics we calibrate the zero time delay and carefully analyse the time dependence of the pump-probe signal. Several distinct intermediate steps in the time evolution can be distinguished, having characteristic time constants ranging from 40 fs to over 100 ps. They are discussed in a consistent scheme for the excitation, ionisation and protonation dynamics, accounting also for characteristic differences observed between deuterated and undeuterated species. A particularly remarkable time dependence of the homogeneous (NH3) 2 + cluster ion signal is interpreted as a fingerprint of internally protonated neutral precursors of the type NH3NH2NH4.
