    Description: In this paper, we analyze the strong unidentified emission near 3.28 micron in Titan's upper daytime atmosphere recently discovered by Dinelli et al.We have studied it by using the NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic Database. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), after absorbing UV solar radiation, are able to emit strongly near 3.3 micron. By using current models for the redistribution of the absorbed UV energy, we have explained the observed spectral feature and have derived the vertical distribution of PAH abundances in Titan's upper atmosphere. PAHs have been found to be present in large concentrations, about (2-3) 10(exp 4) particles / cubic cm. The identified PAHs have 9-96 carbons, with a concentration-weighted average of 34 carbons. The mean mass is approx 430 u; the mean area is about 0.53 sq. nm; they are formed by 10-11 rings on average, and about one-third of them contain nitrogen atoms. Recently, benzene together with light aromatic species as well as small concentrations of heavy positive and negative ions have been detected in Titan's upper atmosphere. We suggest that the large concentrations of PAHs found here are the neutral counterpart of those positive and negative ions, which hence supports the theory that the origin of Titan main haze layer is located in the upper atmosphere.

    Description: ScienzAperta is an outreach science venue that the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia started in 2011 as the spring of science: the doors of the headquarters of science were finally opened to public. A number of events, conferences, seminars, guided tours through the Institute and its laboratories are every year offered to general public. The venue is held in most of the cities where the Institute is located, priority to high seismic and/or volcanic risk regions. On May 2014 we held ScienzAperta for the first time in Milano and open up the doors to schools specifically dealing mostly with seismic hazard in a region where general public not necessarily think it might We offered students conferences, seminars and educational activities to highlight the fun of science and jet raise awareness on proper behaviours in case of earthquake shaking. We asked students and teachers, from elementary to high schools, to fill in a questionnaire that we use to evaluate the appreciation the venue had. One hundred years after Giuseppe Mercalli’s death we could not forget to celebrate his science the city where he was born.

    Description: This contribution presents the general framework of the European project UPStrat-MAFA "Urban disaster Prevention Strategies using MAcroseismic Fields and FAult Sources" and its ongoing activities. A unique probabilistic procedure is being used for seismic hazard evaluation, using both macroseismic fields and characteristics of fault sources for the analysis of data from volcanic and tectonic areas: Mt. Etna, Mt. Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei (Italy), Azores Islands (Portugal), South Iceland (Iceland), Alicante-Murcia (Spain), and mainland and offshore Portugal. An improvement of urban scale vulnerability information on building and network systems (typologies, schools, strategic buildings, lifelines, and others) is proposed in the form of a global Disruption Index, with the objective to provide a systematic way of measuring earthquake impact in urbanized areas considered as complex networks. Disaster prevention strategies are considered based on an education information system, another effective component of the disaster risk reduction given by long-term activities.

    Description: Obiettivo: Facendo seguito a uno studio portato avanti nell’ambito di Miti e Geologia (Lanza & Negrete 2007) si sono volute sperimentare alcune conclusioni di quello studio che caldeggiava l’utilizzo di miti e leggende popolari in ambito scolastico per la diffusione della conoscenza riguardante il nostro pianeta. Il target che era all’inizio rappresentato dai bambini di seconda e quarta elementare (della Scuola primaria Federico Di Donato di Roma) si è poi esteso anche agli insegnanti e persino ai genitori di quegli alunni vedendoli tutti coinvolti come soggetti attivi nell’ambito di questo progetto. Il coinvolgimento e l’entusiasmo partecipativo si è sviluppato anche in seguito alla modalità di realizzazione di questo progetto iniziale. La leggenda del pescatore Colapesce è stata ripresa e riadattata in uno script per celebrare il centenario del terremoto di Messina (1908) ai fini di una vera e propria rappresentazione teatrale fatta dai bambini. Dunque lo script alla fine conteneva non soltanto la favola con i suoi protagonisti classici: un Re, una principessa e un pescatore ma anche una parte più moderna dove i protagonisti erano un gruppetto di sismologi interpretati da alcuni bambini di quarta elementare. L’inserimento di contenuti scientifici all’interno della rappresentazione è stata resa agevolmente possibile con l’introduzione di oggetti, quali una mappa della sismicità in Italia e un sismometro. Oggetti che hanno consentito agli alunni di comprendere non soltanto come si studiano i terremoti ma anche che la prevenzione è il metodo migliore per conviverci. Dopo tre mesi di preparazione ottenuta anche grazie alla collaborazione di un regista di Messina coadiuvato da un esperto in psico-dramma, gli alunni erano pronti per recitare davanti a tutta la scuola nell’ambito della XIX settimana della cultura scientifica (il 27 Marzo 2009). A giudicare dall’entusiasmo generale di tutti, attori, spettatori e organizzatori è stato un successo. Tuttavia se la rappresentazione finale costituisce l’ultima tappa, di fondamentale importanza sarà valutare come si è sviluppato l’apprendimento nel corso dei tre mesi di preparazione a questo evento e quanto rimarrà a qualche mese di distanza soprattutto del contenuto scientifico agito sulla scena. Mentre un altro aspetto assumerà valutare quanto il contenuto favolistico abbia ben disposto gli alunni ad accogliere nozioni nuove e quanto invece li abbia distratti (soprattutto i più piccoli, quelli di seconda elementare). Si può far notare che l’apprendimento ha coinvolto attivamente anche gli insegnanti che non soltanto si sono mostrati piacevolmente disponibili ad approfondire i contenuti scientifici ai fini della rappresentazione, ma hanno utilizzato gli stessi per scegliere gli attori e per suggerire modifiche allo script iniziale. Attualmente sono in corso delle analisi con questionari per alunni e insegnanti al fine di individuarne l’efficacia comunicativa e tirare le conclusioni di questa esperienza.

    Description: The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is one of principal Italian institution dealing with Earth Sciences research. INGV is also in charge of the real-time seismic and volcanic surveillance, and of the early warning and forecast activities. Italy is a seismic and volcanic country and it is therefore important the social role of a correct information on natural hazards and its implication on social and cultural aspects. The Laboratorio Didattica e Divulgazione Scientifica of the INGV organizes intense educational and outreach activities in the consciousness that preparedness is the best way to live with and to mitigate natural hazards. These activities partially respond to a significant demand from the Society; one question is which are the most effective and authoritative approaches to be developed to fulfill this demand. The Annuario Scienza e Società 2011, even if outlines a scarce level of scientific knowledge among citizens, highlights a growing demand for information on science and technology. For the majority of people the main source of scientific notions are newspapers, where the exposition of science-related news is constantly increasing. On the other hand, public Conferences that allow a direct relationship with researcher represent the most reliable scientific informative contest, as well as the Web sites of scientific institutions and the researchers blogs. These data emphasize the importance of the social role of science institutions and the need of an active and responsible involvement of research in educational outreach. This represents one of the aim of our educational activity. This talk give an overview of our activities with regards to research-community interactions.

    Description: Among the different methodologies to educate people to the planet sustainability, the Ecomuseum is one of the most innovative and advanced. It offers the opportunity of using different didactic modules such as drama and museography in order to obtain the full involvement of the people to be educated. In the Ecomuseum, visitors are not just the observers but also interactors and in a wide perspective even the watchmen of the territory where they live. In Italy already exist eighty Ecomuseums, two already established in the Lazio Region. One of those, the one in the Agro-pontino area, is already operating at a large scale and in a European contest with great results. Following the same path, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Rome chose an area, the Albani Hills, to implement a pilot-project for the establishment of an Ecomuseum in one of the Lazio Region areas rich of natural landscapes and history. In collaboration with the Ente Parco dei Castelli Romani a program for Lyceum students was implemented during a year (2009-2010). The students of two classrooms of the Mancinelli and Falconi Institute in Velletri (III Classical Lyceum and III Socio-Pedagogical Lyceum ), aged 16, chose an itinerary in the volcanic-origin area around the Nemi Lake to be developed in three items: the Roman Ships Museum; The lake itself; and the Diana Nemorensis Temple’s ruins. The final goal was interpreting the territory with the help of scenic actions. It was a sort of opened-air theatre where history, legends and their historical figures - mainly Caligula and the Goddess Diana - described the area from the different points of view: geological, historical, naturalistic and even gastronomic. The project evaluation was assigned to a Socio-Pedagogical Lyceum, under the supervision of INGV Didactic Lab. Results are encouraging even if innovative way to gain students enthusiasm should be thought since only a small group of students participated actively to the project. For future experiences it is important to succeed in involving as many teachers as possible to have more hours at disposal to be dedicated also to the dramatization.

    Description: Scientific exhibitions, hands-on laboratories for kids, meetings and seminars with researchers, guided tours to laboratories are the ingredients for the outreach week "ScienzAperta" at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). ScienzAperta, the Open Science Week, responds to the needs and the request of the society for more information on issues regarding our Planet. The common goal is to engage INGV researchers to be involved in a correct, straightforward and efficient communication to public about research and technological innovations they perform. In a world that request citizens to be more informed, aware and able to make crucial decisions about their own health and safety, the knowledge is crucial to handle doubts and to know how to choose with consciousness. Since 2011, ScienzAperta held once per year during spring; several INGV headquaters over the Italian territory open their doors to public. The goal is to help raise awareness about earth sciences, and research activities at INGV, as well as intrigue, interest, and stimulate audiences of all ages. Researchers and technicians involved in outreach activities conceive scientific programs to present research as the heritage of all. Some activities were organized in collaboration with other institutions and with transdisciplinary approaches. For example in 2011 edition, in collaboration with Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca per gli Alimenti (INRAN), geophysics and nutrition sciences were linked through geodynamic evolution and diet evolution of the Mediterranean. In all the past three editions music-based initiatives were designed to attract young people as well as generic public, such as the performances "seismic waves, sound waves, from earthquake to music", "musical journey of Italian earthquakes", "waves, sympathy and music", "landscapes, territory and wines". The ScienzAperta programs were designed giving special attention to pupils and teachers. Hand-on laboratories for kids on earthquakes, volcanoes, and also on INGV researches in Antarctica were organized, and achieved great participation and appreciation. Analysis of questionnaires distributed among adult visitors and children during an Open Saturday in 2013 in Rome provided hints to improve the outreach event format. Acquired pieces of information were perceived as useful to get more in depth with the topics by mostly all adult visitors; nothing was perceived as not clear, appreciation comments came as well as invitations to repeat such events more frequently; children perceived the games as very interesting, very useful and well organized, but in some cases the notions not so easy to be understood.

    Description: La mostra consente fin dal suo inizio di “entrare” nel mondo degli spettacolari fenomeni geotermici. Immagini di geyser, pozze di fango ribollente, fumarole, acque termali dai colori più improbabili, incrostazioni multicolori e affascinanti cristalli, provenienti da varie parti del mondo accompagneranno i visitatori alla scoperta delle caratteristiche naturalistiche del fenomeno. Ad arricchire l'esposizione iniziale curata da Vulcano Esplorazioni, un video con immagini raccolte in varie parti del pianeta, eccezionali campioni di minerali di origine idrotermale provenienti dal Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano e diorami esplicativi, in scala e ridotti. Ricostruzioni, schemi ed exhibit facilitano la comprensione del meccanismo fisico che scatena questi fenomeni. La parte scientifica, curata in particolare dall’INGV, ripercorre anche le esperienze pionieristiche di Larderello, ricostruendo il primo esperimento del 1904 di produzione di energia elettrica da vapore geotermico. Il percorso museale illustra anche il grande potenziale energetico presente soprattutto in Italia, il paese più caldo d'Europa, offerto dal calore della Terra, un’energia rinnovabile e pulita. L'esibizione termina con uno spettacolare filmato in 3D.

    Description: Science Festivals are events world wide organized, and they have became more and more one of the most effective playground where science meet people. Genova Science Festival, held since 2003, is the Italian most interesting event of that type. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), one of the largest European scientific institution deal- ing with Earth Sciences research and real-time surveillance, early warning, and forecast activities in geophysics and volcanology, participates every year developing a specific educational path, concerning some of its research areas. For the 2010 Genova Science Festival, the INGV has produced an educational exhibition called “Mediterraneo Dinamico” (Dynamic Mediterranean). This is a journey in the geodynamical history of the Mediterranean region from 200 million years ago till present. This long process took place also through some instantaneous dramatic events as eruptions, tsunami, earthquakes, whose studies have revealed their strong impact on cultural Mediterranean evolution as well as on environmental aspects as climate. The exhibition path aim is to illustrate and explain to general public, and especially to teachers and students, the results from researches conducted by INGV also in collaboration with other Italian and International partners, as well as from the real time Mediterranean sea water monitoring. The chosen exhibition instruments are wide colourful illustrated posters, greatly illustrated, together with smart interactive exhibits. In particular the path starts with a “Time Machine”, that allows visitors to retrace the main steps of the Mediterranean geological evolution, supported by posters. The following section concerning the “Mediterranean catastrophic event” welcome visitors with a glass pyramid projecting a virtual eruption almost as an “ologramma”, and side panels with two short videos explaining two great explosive eruptions and a tsunami event. The section on Mediterranean Tsunami are equipped with an interactive large map of the location of Mediteranean where occurred tsunami events, illustrated posters and also a microscope with a camera where visitors can analyse a core with a tsunami deposits. Also an interactive model of a GEOSTAR - Geophisical and Oceanographic Station of Abyssal Research provide visitors an entertaining approach on how a submarine observatory works with all his sensors, while a computer station permits visitors to read real time measures of some marine environmental indicators. The exhibition journey trough the Mediterranean geo-history and Earth Science and Geophysical research shows how the continuous knowledge and monitoring of to this Region dynamics are fundamental to design a future bearable development for the 30 million people living along the Mediterranean shores.
