Description: Abstract. Teleseismic data recorded by temporary and permanent stations located in the Northern Victoria Land region are analysed in order to identify the presence and location of seismic anisotropy. We work on data recorded by 24 temporary seismographic stations deployed between 1993 and 2000 in different zones of the Northern Victoria Land, and by the permanent very broad-band stations TNV located near the Italian Base M. Zucchelli. The temporary networks monitored an area extending from Terra Nova Bay towards the South beyond the David Glacier and up to the Indian Ocean northward. To better constrain our study, we also provide an analysis of data recorded by TNV in the same period of time and we take into account also SKS shear wave splitting measurements performed by Barruol and Hoffman (1999) on data recorded by DRV. This study, to be considered as preliminary, reveals the presence of seismic anisotropy below the study region, with a mainly NW-SE fast velocity direction below the Terra Nova Bay area and rather large delay times, that mean a deep rooted anisotropic layer.

Description: We present regional centroid-moment tensor (RCMT) solutions for 168 moderate-magnitude earthquakes that occurred in the European-Mediterranean region during 2001 and 2002. Events with moment magnitudes as low as 4.0 were successfully analyzed, although this low threshold is only achievable in regions with the best azimuthal coverage and with stations at a few hundred kilometers distance. Earthquakes with focal depths from 10 to more than 200 km were analyzed. Comparison with standard Harvard CMTs, when available, shows good agreement. The solutions shown in this paper represent an addition to the European-Mediterranean RCMT catalog that we are maintaining. The RCMT catalog now spans 6 years, from 1997 to 2002, and contains 420 solutions. We also outline the main seismic sequences that occurred in the European-Mediterranean region during 2001–2002.

Description: The project Retreating-trench, extension, and accretion tectonics, RETREAT, is a multidisciplinary study of the Northern Apennines (www.geology.yale.edu/RETREAT/index.htm), is funded by the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and the Grant Agency of the Czech Academy of Sciences (GAAV). The main goal of RETREAT is to develop a self-consistent dynamic model of syn-convergent extension, using the Northern Apennines as a natural laboratory. In the context of this project a passive seismological experiment was deployed in the fall of 2003 for a period of three years. RETREAT seismologists aim to develop a comprehensive understanding of the deep structure beneath the Northern Apennines, with particular attention on inferring likely patterns of mantle flow. Specific objectives of the project are the crustal and lithospheric thicknesses, the location and geometry of the Adriatic slab, and the distribution of seismic anisotropy laterally and vertically in the lithosphere and asthenosphere. The project is collecting teleseismic and regional earthquake data for 3 years. This contribution describes the RETREAT seismic deployment and reports on key results from the first year of the deployment. We confirm some prior findings regarding the seismic structure of central Italy, but our observations also highlight the complexity of the Northern Apennines subduction system.

Description: We estimated SKS splitting parameters for 18 earthquakes observed over 2 years on a dense linear seismometer array crossing the Apennines orogen (Northern Italy). An abrupt (within 30 km) change in fast polarization occurs near the crest of the Apennines. Southwest of the crest, fast polarization parallels the Apennines strike (WNW–ESE), rotating to EW orientation near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Northeast of the crest, toward the Po Plain, fast polarization is NNE–SSW, roughly normal to the orogen’s strike. Delay times (0.6–2.9s) do not show a remarkable pattern. Splitting parameters beneath the Apennines argue against anisotropy restricted to the crust, and suggest that the mantle region deformed by Apennines slab rollback is spatially limited. We hypothesize that the rollback process has been uneven, evolving to a contortion of the northern edge of the Apennines slab, and perhaps incipient detachment. Lithospheric anisotropy beneath the Po-Plain may also be significant.

Description: Since 1997 we maintain and systematically update the European–Mediterranean Regional Centroid Moment Tensor (RCMT) catalog, which contains seismic-moment tensors for earthquakes with moderate magnitude (4.5〈M〈 5.5) in the Mediterranean and European regions. We present 354 new solutions for the period 2005–2008. The Catalog now spans 12 years and contains more than 1000 definitive RCMT solutions. In addition to definitive solutions, we maintain and update a dataset of recent ‘quick’ solutions that are computed soon after an earthquake occurs using the more limited set of data available in quasi- real time. We investigate the reliability of the moment tensor results in the RCMT catalog. Comparison with Global CMT results, which is possible for the larger events (M〈 5.0) in the RCMT catalog, shows that for 75% of the events, the Kagan angle measure of the similarity of two moment tensors is smaller than 20◦, reflecting good agreement of the results. We describe improvements and enhancements in the dissemination of the RCMT results through our website.

Description: We present two projects in seismology that have been ported to web technologies, which provide results in Keyhole Markup Language (KML) visualization layers. These use the Google Earth geo-browser as the flexible platform that can substitute specialized graphical tools to perform qualitative visual data analyses and comparisons. The Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology (NERIES) Tomographic Earth Model Repository contains datasets from over 20 models from the literature. A hierarchical structure of folders that represent the sets of depths for each model is implemented in KML, and this immediately results into an intuitive interface for users to navigate freely and to compare tomographic plots. The KML layer for the European-Mediterranean Regional Centroid-Moment Tensor Catalog displays the focal mechanism solutions or moderate magnitude Earthquakes from 1997 to the present. Our aim in both projects was to also propose standard representations of scientific datasets. Here, the general semantic approach of XML has an important impact that must be further explored, although we find the KML syntax to be more shifted towards detailed visualization aspects. We have thus used, and propose the use of, Javascript Object Notation (JSON), another semantic notation that stems from the web-development community that provides a compact, general-purpose, data-exchange format.
