Notes: A 400 kV high-resolution electron microscope has been used in the surface profile imaging mode to observe surfaces and surface reactions directly in real time. The processes studied include: the formation of surface oxides on Pd and Ag and on In-compound semiconductors; surface reduction and metallization, diffusion and accretion on oxide surfaces; and structural rearrangements in small metal particles. It is concluded that the technique can provide unique information about surface phenomena.

Notes: We found that high resolution electron microscopy has the following merits in the study of alloy structures: (1) New phases too small to be studied by x-rays, such as σ-related phases, may be studied; (2) local and highly disordered structures, such as domain boundaries and domains of only a few unit cells, are more easily studied; and (3) it is easier to order solute atoms, such as Ti atoms columns in Cu4Ti.

Notes: The Laboratory of Atomic Imaging of Solids is dedicated to the direct imaging of materials in various fields of solid-state sciences at the atomic or molecular level. The main programs of this laboratory are briefly described, including quasicrystals, new phases and microdomains in Frank-Kasper phases, suboxides of metals, catalysts, minerals found in China, and molecular structure of organic substances. A recent systematic investigation of domain structures consisting of juxtaposed icosahedral columns is also presented.

Notes: High-resolution electron microscopy has been used to characterize the platinum particles supported on TiO2 or ZnO. After reduction at elevated temperatures, the metallic particles display a regular, faceted shape, and several superstructures, Pt3 Ti(C), Pt3 Ti(H), PtTi, and PtZn, have been found. These results, which may involve strong metal-support interaction, have been confirmed by optical diffraction and image simulation.
