    Description / Table of Contents: Die thermische Degradation der Chlorierungsprodukte von cis- und trans-1.4-Polybutadien wurde mit Hilfe der Pyrolyse-Gaschromatographie untersucht. Der Mechanismus der Chlorierung und der thermischen Degradation wurde über einen weiten Chlorierungsgrad geprüft. Außerdem wurde durch Analyse von charakteristischen Degradationsprodukten wie o-, m- und p-Dichlorbenzol und Vinylidenchlorid die sterische Struktur der sogenannten Kopf-Kopf-Polyvinylchloride geklärt.
    Notes: Thermal degradation of chlorinated cis- and trans-polybutadienes was studied by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography. The mechanism of chlorination reaction and thermal degradation of the polymers was examined over a wide range of degree of chlorination. The steric structure of so-called head-to-head polyvinyl chloride was elucidated by analysis of such characteristic degradation products as o-, m-, and p-dichlorobenzenes and vinylidenechloride.

    Description / Table of Contents: Um die Menge der Grundbausteine abzuschätzen, die im isotaktischen und ataktischen Polypropylen entgegengesetzt zur Hauptverknüpfungsrichtung angeordnet sind, wurde die Pyrolyse-Gaschromatographie der Chlorierungsprodukte verwendet. Dazu wurde das molare Verhältnis Mesitylen/Pseudocumol aus den Chromatogrammen der Pyrolyseprodukte bestimmt. Die bei der Pyrolyse entstehenden isomeren Trimethylbenzole geben Aufschluß über die Triaden im ursprünglichen Polypropylen.
    Notes: A unique method of estimating the amount of chemical inversions in monomer placement of isotactic and atactic polypropylene was developed by means of pyrolysis gas chromatography of its chlorination products. The molar proportion of mesitylene/pseudocumene was determined from the chromatograms of the pyrolysis products. The isomers of trimethylbenzene which are formed during the pyrolysis gave good information about the triads in the original polypropylene.

    Description / Table of Contents: Um Informationen über die Mikrostruktur von Äthylen/Propylen (E/P)-Copolymeren zu bekommen, wurden Pyrolyse-gaschromatographische Untersuchungen der Chlorierungsprodukte der Äthylen/Propylen-Copolymeren (Cl-(E/P)-Copolymeren) ausgeführt. Verschiedene olefinische Peaks werden in den Gaschromatogrammen der E/P-Copolymeren beobachtet; in den Gaschromatogrammen der Cl-(E/P)-Copolymeren stammen die intensiven Peaks hingegen von aromatischen Verbindungen, wie Benzol, Toluol, den isomeren Xylolen und Trimethylbenzolen. Diese geben gute Informationen über die Mikrostruktur des unsubstituierten Copolymeren. Die Konzentration an Triaden in den Molekülketten der E/P-Copolymeren und deren Abbau werden diskutiert.
    Notes: Pyrolysis-gas chromatographic studies of chlorinated ethylene/propylene (Cl-(E/P)) copolymers have been carried out to obtain informations about the microstructure of the nonsubstituted E/P copolymers. The pyrograms of the E/P copolymers show various olefin peaks, while on the pyrograms of the Cl-(E/P) copolymers, the main peaks represent aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene isomers and trimethylbenzene isomers which give good informations about the microstructure of the nonsubstituted copolymers. The concentration of triads in the E/P copolymers and the thermal decomposition of the Cl-(E/P) copolymers are discussed.

    Notes: A glow discharge chemical ionization (CI) source equipped with a pneumatic nebulizer for sample introduction has been constructed. A comparative study of the discharge CI and conventional CI by electron impact from a hot filament is made for various polar compounds using oxygen-containing reagents such as water and methanol. The potential utility of the discharge ion source to liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry is also discussed.

    Notes: The determination of end groups in polystyrenes (PSts) polymerized anionically with n-butyllithium as the initiator was carried out by pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC). The relative proportions of the end groups decrease with increasing molecular weight (MW). Consequently, the peaks which reflect the structure of the end groups can be distinguished by comparing pyrograms of samples with different MW. By comparing the intensities of these peaks relative to total intensities of all the peaks in the pyrogram, the numberaverage molecular weight (Mn) of the polymer can be estimated. The observed Mn values of PSts estimated by this method are compared with those determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). By this method it was possible to make direct determination of Mn values of PSts with MWs between 1000 and ca. 1 million. Furthermore, the calibration curve produced by the relative intensity of one of the most characteristic peaks (2-phenyl-1-heptene; C4H9—CH2C (Ph) = CH2) for the end group to total intensity of all the peaks in the pyrogram, gave rapid and highly reproducible Mn values. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A new vertical microfurnace-type pyrolyzer for thermal desorption and/or pyrolysis-gas chromatography has been developed. The pyrolyzer consists of two independent temperature-controlled ovens.Initially, in the desorption process, a sample cup containing the polymeric sample of interest is inserted into an oven at 300°C; the sample is then re-positioned at the upper part of the pyrolyzer where the temperature is maintained at room temperature. The resulting vaporized components such as residual solvents and additives give a desorption chromatogram. The relative peak intensities of desorbed plasticizers in acrylonitrile butadiene-rubber gave a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 2%.Subsequently, pyrolysis of the remaining polymer is conducted by dropping the sample cup into the second, pyrolyzing, oven at 55°C; at this stage the pyrogram is recorded.The resulting two chromatograms of desorbed components and pyrolysis products make it easier to characterize the polymer formulation than the complicated pyrogram obtained by an ordinary, single-step pyrolysis.

    Notes: An improved vacuum nebulizing interface with a very short counter nozzle was developed for direct coupling of a micro-LC and a quadrupole MS with CI-chamber. With the LC-MS system using the nebulizing interface, it became possible to take mass fragmentograms for various less volatile compounds such as glutamic acid, steroids, aromatic amines and chlorine-containing insecticides.
