Notes: Abstract Determination of Se in biological materials was attempted by microwave-induced plasma mass spectrometry (MIP-MS). (1) Serum samples were available after 10 times dilution with 0.5% nitric acid solution containing 0.1% Triton X-100. When oxygen gas was inserted into the plasma gas (nitrogen) in order to improve the combustion, the sensitivity was reduced to 45%. The detection limit of this method was 0.5 ng/mL. (2) Standard reference materials on commercial base were used to evaluate the accuracy of the Se determination by MIP-MS after microwave digestion. In samples like bovine liver and human hair with Se concentrations of more than 0.7 μg/g, the standard curve method after internal standard (IS) correction was acceptable. This procedure was unsuitable for samples with low Se concentrations such as milk powder (certified value of Se 0.11 μg/g), or plant leaf samples. (3) Instead of IS correction, the peak height of the spectrum was used for calculations from the matrix matched calibration curve. The results of all materials were close to the certified values, even at 25 ng/g. The detection limit of the MIP-MS with microwave digestion and IS correction was 0.05 ng/mL in standard solutions. The detection limit of the peak height method was 0.1 ng/mL and was estimated to be 〈 20 ng/g in plant materials.

Notes: Abstract Liver temperatures of male Wistar rats were measured continuously by a copper-constantan thermocouple in a climatic chamber under LD 12:12 hr light-dark cycle. When rats were exposed to cold of 8°C in the light period, liver temperature rose in the majority of the animals, while it fell in a dark period in most cases. It was found that the response of liver temperature change to cold exposure in a light period was distinct from that in a dark period. Further, it was suggested that the response varied with time in the light-dark cycle.

Notes: Abstract The effects of the light-dark (LD) cycle and its inversion on the susceptibility of mice to lead were investigated. Groups of mice were injected once with a high (200 mg Pb/kg body weight) or low (10 mg Pb/kg body weight) dose of lead acetate at one of four-hourly intervals, i.e., 09.00 h, 13.00 h, 17.00 h, 21.00 h, 01.00h, and 05.00 h, on the days before and after a phase shift in the LD cycle. The main indices used to measure the susceptibility of the mice were dying rate and percent mortality of ICR mice following injection together with the Pb concentration (Pb-B) and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity in the blood. In the present study, we ascertained the following facts: (1) Dying rate (time to death following injection) and Pb-B exhibited a circadian rhythm with a peak initiated by injection in the dark period. (2) Injection with a low dose of lead within a few days after an LD inversion significantly decreased the level of ALAD activity and increased the Pb in the blood in comparison with control animals kept under a non-inverted LD cycle. Both the dying rate and the percent mortality following a high dose of lead, however, were hardly affected.

Notes: Abstract The angular distributions of the reactione + e −→μ+μ− ande + e +→τ+τ− have been measured between $$\sqrt s = 50$$ and 60.8 GeV with the VENUS detector at TRISTAN. The average total cross section and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for μ-pair production are observed to be 28.3±1.4±0.8 pb and (−29.0 −4.8 +5.0 ±0.5)%, and those for τ-pair production are 27.6±1.7±1.0 pb and (−32.8 −6.2 +6.4 ±1.5)% at $$\langle \sqrt s \rangle $$ . These values are consistent with the predictions of the standard model of electroweak interactions.

Notes: Abstract Experimental studies of open charm production in two-photon processes have been performed. In the measurement, charmed hadrons were identified by electrons from their semi-leptonic decays. The result was compared with calculations based on the direct process and photon-gluon fusion process by resolved photons. We found that the effect of the gluon component in a photon is substantial in the observed events.

Notes: Several organic oligomers (Mw = 103-104 order) containing Si=H bonds of the general formula 1 have been successfully synthesized by platinum-catalyzed partial hydrosilylation reaction of an allyloxy (or an allyl carbonate) end-blocked linear organic oligomer 2 with 2,4,6,8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane, [CH3(H)SiO]4 (3) (hereafter called hydrocyclotetrasiloxane). 1H-NMR spectroscopy confirmed the introduction of hydrocyclotetrasiloxane moiety into the oligomers through Si—C linkage by hydrosilylation reaction. 13C-NMR analysis revealed that the cyclic structure of the starting hydrocyclotetrasiloxane 3 was retained intact in product 1. As the precursor for 1, allyloxy (or allyl carbonate) end-blocked oligomers 2 could be prepared from hydroxyl-terminated oligomers 4. The storage stability of product 1 was significantly influenced by the platinum catalyst still remaining in it. The poor stability was improved by decreasing the amount of the platinum catalyst and/or by adding coordinating compounds. As a result, an excellent stability of product 1 was obtained. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Abstract Information is given to enable the experimental analysis of large deformations by application of photoelastic techniques. Promising photoelastic materials having low elastic modulus and high optical sensitivity were obtained for practical use at room temperature. The time and temperature dependence of the stress-fringe order and stress-strain relations of one of these viscoelastic materials is discussed. Photoelastic investigations of large deflected straight and circular beams are reported. Photoelastic technique seems to be a useful method for analysis of large deformations of models with complicated shapes.

Notes: We describe here the preparation and properties of a novel curing system, which has been derived from an SiH-containing organic oligomer 1 and an allyloxy end-blocked organic oligomer 2. The composition of these oligomers could be crosslinked via a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction, that is, the addition reaction of the SiH bonds of 1 to the allyl functionality of 2, above 100°C, yields a rubbery material in a short period of time. The compatibility of the SiH-containing oligomer 1 with the allyloxy end-blocked oligomer 2 was governed by the oligomer main chain employed. Hence the SiH-containing oligomer 1 was completely miscible with 2, having the same main chain and, thus, the system yielded a homogeneously cured material. The poly(propylene oxide) curing system 1a/2a was systematically investigated in detail to manifest its curing behavior and crosslink structure. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
