Notes: Alternating current responses of fiberglass-reinforced epoxy composites have been studied as a function of frequency (10 Hz to 100 kHz) and temperature (-30 to 100°C). At higher water content, permanent defects are created presumably at the fiber - matrix interfaces as the temperature goes down to 0°C. These defects increase significantly the dielectric losses. A recovery of the initial state is possible under thermal annealing above the glass transition temperature of the epoxy resin.

Notes: A method of making thin polymer (polystyrene and polysiloxane) films by glow discharge is described. The thickness of the films varies between several hundred angstroms and a few microns. The parameters of the method are studied: pressure, frequency, current density in the discharge and discharge time. An interpretation of the physical phenomena is given, and we show that it applies qualitatively to the two polymers studied. An infrared spectrometric analysis of the product obtained shows that it differs little from the product obtained by chemical means and that, for polysiloxane, the most probable configuration is that of a linear polymer. Thermostability is studied, and we show that the polymer does not suffer any serious damage up to temperatures of 400°C applied for about 10 hr. The possibility of obtaining films of several thousand angstroms and with adequate temperature stability make it possible to use polymers in the insulation and the passivation of semiconductor components.

Notes: Water sorption and diffusion has been measured in polyamide-imide over a range of temperature and relative humidities. The results are compared to those obtained on Kapton and discussed in terms of chemical differences between these two materials. Changes in dielectric loss during hydrothermal aging under 85°C and 85% RH have been measured. These changes are correlated to the water sorption kinetics.

Notes: Experimental results on plasma treatments of polysulfone and polyetherimide to improve the wettability of these polymers are presented. The plasma is characterized by optical emission spectroscopy. The wettability of the polymer surfaces were checked by contact angle measurements and ESCA is used to compare the surfaces before and after plasma treatment. Correlations between contact angle, concentration of oxygen at the surface, and optical emission intensity of the OH radical have been established. Optimization of operational plasma parameters leading to the best wettability of the treated samples is reported.

Notes: Oxygen barrier coatings were made by plasma polymer deposition on a polypropylene substrate. Plasma polymer deposition is realized in a low-frequency reactor with hexamethyldisiloxane/oxygen (HMDSO/O2) precursors. The structure and composition of the deposited coating are characterized by density measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. Permeability of the polypropylene, coated with plasma films made from various gas compositions, is interpreted in terms of coating structure and composition. Incorporation of molecular oxygen in the gas phase results in inorganic and dense films. It is shown that the density of the film is the main factor controlling the oxygen barrier effect. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: FORTRAN subprograms for the solution of systems of linear algebraic equations are evaluated and compared on the basis of execution speed and accuracy. A symmetric, positive definite, banded test matrix is used in each case. The procedures considered are direct solution, iteration and matrix inversion. Both in-core schemes and those requiring the use of auxiliary data storage devices are included. Some of the techniques used require the full coefficient matrix, whereas others account for symmetry, banding, or sparseness of the system.Matrix inversion is found to be an inefficient technique, even if multiple right-hand side constant vectors are to be solved. In such cases, either Gauss elimination with multiple constant vectors treated simultaneously, or decomposition with the retention of the upper and lower triangular matrices, is recommended. Double precision arithmetic is suggested as a means of reducing round-off errors, and should always be employed when permitted by the computer's core capacity. On the basis of the results obtained with the single test system of equations, specific subprograms are recommended for each category of problem.

Notes: We have fused the open reading frames of his3-complementing genes from Saccharomyces kluyveri and Schizosaccharomyces pombe to the strong TEF gene promotor of the filamentous fungus Ashbya gossypii. Both chimeric modules and the cognate S. kluyveri HIS3 gene were tested in transformations of his3 S. cerevisiae strains using PCR fragments flanked by 40 bp target guide sequences. The 1·4 kb chimeric Sz. pombe module (HIS3MX6) performed best. With less than 5% incorrectly targeted transformants, it functions as reliably as the widely used geniticin resistance marker kanMX. The rare false-positive His+ transformants seem to be due to non-homologous recombination rather than to gene conversion of the mutated endogenous his3 allele. We also cloned the green fluorescent protein gene from Aequorea victoria into our pFA-plasmids with HIS3MX6 and kanMX markers. The 0·9 kb GFP reporters consist of wild-type GFP or GFP-S65T coding sequences, lacking the ATG, fused to the S. cerevisiae ADH1 terminator. PCR-synthesized 2·4 kb-long double modules flanked by 40-45 bp-long guide sequences were successfully targeted to the carboxy-terminus of a number of S. cerevisiae genes. We could estimate that only about 10% of the transformants carried inactivating mutations in the GFP reporter. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Description: This paper proposes a new on-site technique for the experimental characterization of small wind systems by emulating the behavior of a wind tunnel facility. Due to the high cost and complexity of these facilities, many manufacturers of small wind systems do not have a well knowledge of the characteristic λ - C p curve of their turbines. Therefore, power electronics converters connected to the wind generator are usually programmed with speed/power control curves that do not optimize the power generation. The characteristic λ - C p curves obtained through the proposed method will help manufacturers to obtain optimized speed/power control curves. In addition, a low cost small wind emulator has been designed. Programmed with the experimental λ - C p curve, it can validate, improve, and develop new control algorithms to maximize the energy generation. The emulator is completed with a new graphic user interface that monitors in real time both the value of the λ - C p coordinate and the operating point on the 3D working surface generated with the characteristic λ - C p curve obtained from the real small wind system. The proposed method has been applied to a small wind turbine commercial model. The experimental results demonstrate that the point of operation obtained with the emulator is always located on the 3D surface, at the same coordinates (rotor speed/wind speed/power) as the ones obtained experimentally, validating the designed emulator.

Description: The purpose of this paper is to explore the presence of spatial and temporal effects on the calls for noise disturbance service reported to the Local Police of València (Spain) in the time period from 2014 to 2015, and investigate how some socio-demographic and environmental variables affect the noise phenomenon. The analysis is performed at the level of València’s boroughs. It has been carried out using a logistic model after dichotomization of the noise incidence variable. The spatial effects consider first- and second-order neighbors. The temporal effects are included in the model by means of one- and two-week temporal lags. Our model confirms the presence of strong spatio-temporal effects. We also find significant associations between noise incidence and specific age groups, socio-economic status, land uses, and recreational activities, among other variables. The results suggest that there is a problem of "social" noise in València that is not exclusively a consequence of coexistence between local residents. External factors such as the increasing number of people on the streets during weekend nights or during summer months severely increase the chances of expecting a noise incident.

Description: One of the major consequences of the digital revolution has been the increase in the use of electronic devices in health services. Despite their remarkable advantages, though, the use of computers and other visual display terminals for a prolonged time may have negative effects on vision, leading to a greater risk of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) among their users. In this study, the importance of ocular and visual symptoms related to CVS was evaluated, and the factors associated with CVS were studied, with the help of an algorithm based on regression trees and genetic algorithms. The performance of this proposed model was also tested to check its ability to predict how prone a worker is to suffering from CVS. The findings of the present research confirm a high prevalence of CVS in healthcare workers, and associate CVS with a longer duration of occupation and higher daily computer usage.
