    Notes: This study explores organizational culture by examining the relationship between total quality management (TQM) and culture, and specifically three elements of a culture related to quality improvement: customer focus, employee involvement, and continuous improvement. Process reengineering is used as an alternative management initiative. A survey of 220 mid-level professionals in 123 organizations was conducted to determine the extent to which there is a relation between the presence of these cultural elements, and the presence of TQM reengineering. The success of process improvement through either TQM or reengineering is used as a vehicle for examining the importance of these cultural elements. The importance of organizational culture and the implications for managers are discussed.

    Learning by example: Benchmarking organizational culture in hospitality, tourism and leisure SMEs (2005)

    Notes: Purpose - To provide positive benchmarking examples of hospitality, tourism and leisure small management enterprises in the area of organizational culture. Design/methodology/approach - Extreme case sampling was used; locating information-rich key informants or critical cases. A total of 89 small businesses were researched including hotels (and guest houses), restaurants, pubs, visitor attractions and leisure opportunities. Findings - Semi-structured interviews were analysed using an iterative approach based on the assumptions of Argumentation Theory. Results suggest that best-performing small to medium-sized (SME) operations in the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry share certain elements of culture including: supporting values such as building the future together, cooperative setting of missions and strategies, development of teamwork and organizational learning. Research limitations/implications - The research completed is illustrative of positive benchmarking elements of organizational culture. Further research, however, could also look at negative features which may hinder the success of hospitality, tourism and leisure industry SMEs. Practical implications - The work provides clear suggestions for hospitality, tourism and leisure industry SMEs to improve managerial practice, focusing on five main cultural dimensions: organizational performance, teamwork, building the future together, building the ability to learn, and collaborative setting of strategies. Originality/value - This paper begins to fill the gap of a very under-researched area: benchmarking organizational culture in hospitality, tourism and leisure industry SMEs. Both academics and practitioners will find it very illuminating.

    Notes: Rat oocytes from preantral follicles have been shown to grow and acquire meiotic competence in vitro. Follicles were isolated by enzymatic digestion of ovaries from infant (10- or 11-day-old) Wistar rats. Follicles were cultured for up to 20 days in Minimum Essential Medium (MEM) supplemented with 2 mM hypoxanthine to maintain meiotic arrest. When cultures were begun, oocytes were in midgrowth phase (40-45 μm diameter), and were incapable of undergoing meiotic maturation when placed in hypoxanthine-free MEM. Oocytes grew and acquired meiotic competence during culture for 20 days attaining mean diameters of 62. 6 ± 0.6 μm and 61.1 ± 0.6 μm in two experiments. Germinal vesicle breakdown (GVB) occurred in 60-70% of oocytes when transferred to MEM without hypoxanthine. Concomitant with oocyte growth and maturation were spontaneous increases in follicular production of progestins, androgens and estrogens. When oocytes grown and matured in this system were inseminated in vitro with epididymal sperm, 36.1% and 25.8% were penetrated by one or more sperm in two experiments. However, fertilization was not generally normal with multiple penetrations and abnormal numbers of pronuclei (one or three) being common, suggesting that in these oocytes cytoplasmic maturation was incomplete or abnormal. In the two experiments, normal fertilization (two pronuclei and one sperm tail in the vitellus) occurred in 34.6% and 47 1% of penetrated oocytes with development of these apparently normal zygotes to two-cell embryos being 66.7% and 62.5%, respectively.

    Notes: Recent data from large-scale turbulent natural gas/air diffusion flames (135-210 MW) were used to evaluate analysis of flame structure and radiation properties. The conserved-scalar formalism, in conjunction with the laminar flamelet concept, was used to predict radiative heat fluxes. The narrow-band model considered the nonluminous gas bands of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and carbon monoxide in the 1000-6000mm wavelength range. Structure predictions were encouraging, with discrepancies for mean temperatures (ca200 K in the hottest portions of the flames) comparable to experimental uncertainties, due to thermocouple errors, flame disturbances from ambient winds and lifting and external expansion effects near the injector. Radiative heat flux predictions were also reasonably good, e.g. predictions based on mean scalar properties were generally 15% lower than the measurements. The findings also suggest that continuum radiation from soot is negligible for these flames.

    Notes: The mass spectral fragmentation of a number of specially synthesized amino esters and ketones has been studied in which the distance between the two functionalities has been varied. The principal fragments formed following initial ionization are the even-electron immonium ions a and b. Further fragmentation of ion a in the amino esters occurs via non-specific processes. Therefore it is difficult to establish the degree of mobility of the positive charge in the fragment ions, notably whether the species with the charge present on the oxygen atom makes a significant contribution to the fragmentation. The β-(IIb) and γ-(IV) amino ketones show no McLafferty rearrangements after α-fission, thus demonstrating that uncoupling of the carbonyl π electrons is not a feasible trigger in lieu of charge localization.
