Notizen: Infrared and NMR group-type methods for the analysis of the anhydride content of maleic anhydride copolymers such as poly(maleic anhydride-co-α-olefin) and the half ester content of their reaction products with alcohols are described. The infrared analyses are based on the integrated absorptivities of the anhydride carbonyl and the combination of the acid and ester carbonyl. The NMR method is based on the intensities of the various chemically shifted groups in the copolymer. The use of dimethyl sulfoxide as an auxiliary solvent has made the infrared analysis possible.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: New Investigations into Hydrogen Adsorption and Dissolved IronThe solution processes of iron in n HCl were investigated and a correlation was found between the quantity of hydrogen absorbed in the iron and the rate at which the metal dissolved. A dynamical saturation equilibrium was established in the interior of the metal. From this the significance of partial reactions can be derived and the action of inhibitors explained.

Notizen: Moisture present in epoxy anhyride composites may hydrolyze the anhydride and cause major changes in the mechanical and chemical properties of the final composite. Heat distortion data and infrared spectroscopy are used to analyze the changes caused by the presence of the moisture. As the concentraton of water is increased, there is a decrease in the heat distortion or gass transition temperature. The decrease is due to a change in the crosslinking network and is caused by the reduction of the functonality of the epoxy group for acid as compared to the anhydride. Where rigid specifications must be met it is essential that the moisture level in the fillers, resins, etc. be kept constant.

Notizen: A study has been conducted of the kinetics of the reactions of primary and secondary alcohols with phenyl isocyanate in the presence of metal catalysts. It has been determined that the type and concentration of metal catalyst, the structure of the alcohols, and the type of solvent play an important role in the reaction rates and ratios of rate constants. Catalysis by lead naphthenate increased the reaction rates of 2-methoxy-l-propanol and 1-methoxy-2-propanol more than 3-methoxy-1-propanol, whereas catalysis by dibutyltin dilaurate enhanced the reaction rates of 3-methoxy-1-propanol more than those of 2-methoxy-1-propanol and of 1-methoxy-2-propanol. Dibutyltin dilaurate has been found to impart a high ratio of Kprimary/Ksecondary, where the primary alcohol was 3-methoxy-1-propanol and the secondary alcohol was 1-methoxy-2-propanol. Determinations of mixtures in toluene solutions containing up to 75%, of 3-methoxy-1-propanol were made with good accuracy.

Notizen: The discrete relaxation spectrum of an ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) polymer at 190°C. was calculated by using results from tensile relaxation moduli and the principle of reduced variables. The shift factor was found to conform well to the WLF equation, and the free volume fraction at Tg was calculated to be 0.026 in good agreement with the universal value. The values of the thermal expansion coefficient of free volume were calculated to be 9.8 X 10-4 deg.-1 and 7.0 × 10-4 deg.-1, respectively, from the WLF coefficients and from dilatometric results. The width of the entanglement plateau of the relaxation spectrum was observed to be a factor of approximately 2 larger than that calculated from molecular weights between entanglement couplings determined either from rubber elasticity theory or from an assumed molecular model which discounts the presence of the butadiene in the ABS system. By using Pao's theory, flow curves at 190°C. were calculated both from the discrete relaxation spectrum and from the dynamic modulus. These curves were essentially identical. However, the stress values of these curves were found to be about a decade higher than those experimentally determined from capillary flow measurements. Nevertheless, the shapes of the curves are in good agreement, and an explanation is suggested for existing discrepancies. Flow instability, processing variables, and residual strains are discussed in light of the flow curves and the calculated recoverable shear strains.

Notizen: The influence of hydrogen bonding on the flow behavior of polymer melts at high shear rate has been investigated using a capillary extrusion rheometer. The systems studied were copolymers of ethylene and acrylic or methacrylic acid. Hydrogen bonding was found to substantially enhance both flow activation energy and viscosity level, as well as the degree of dependence of viscosity on rate of shear. It was also found that hydrogen bonding does not influence the critical shear stress for onset of “melt fracture.” The data support the view that hydrogen bonds act effectively as temporary (quasi-) crosslinks during the short time scales of deformation involved in flow at high shear rates.

Notizen: A new high-temperature elastomer, SiB-2, has been investigated by stress relaxation, modulus-temperature, and volume--temperature techniques. SiB-2 was found to be more stable than a related elastomer, radiation-cured silicone rubber, having about twice as long as a chemical relaxation time at 250°C. Possible mechanisms to account for this increased stability are discussed. At low temperatures, Tg for SiB-2 was estimated at -34°C., which compares well with Ti = -30°C. for this polymer. By comparison, SiB-3 has Ti = -60°C., while phenyl-modified SiB-4 was found to have Ti = -25°C. Tm for SiB-2 was estimated to be + 56°C.

Notizen: Relaxation times of polyethylene melts have been measured by Aloisio, Matsuoka, and Maxwell. One implication regarding their observations is that the elastic properties of polymer melts must be time-dependent. In particular, the steady-flow shear modulus depends on the strain rate. Some interpretations of data in the literature have been based on concepts in rubber elasticity where the steady-flow modulus is an equilibrium value, independent of strain rate. We have used Pao's theory for viscoelastic flow together with measurements of relaxation times to discuss the strain rate dependence of the steady-flow shear modulus of melts. The existence of a strain rate-dependent shear modulus leads naturally to a nonlinear relation between shear stress and recoverable shear strain. The conclusions regarding the molecular weight dependence of the modulus also differ from interpretations based on rubber elasticity.
