Notes: Whole cells of Brevibacterium ammoniagenes IAM 1645 having the polyphosphate NAD-kinase were successfully immobilized in a polyacrylamide gel lattice. The immobilized cells were activated by treatment with organic solvents or detergents. The pH optimum of the immobilized cells for the production of NADP was 7.0, and divalent metal ions were required to maintain the elevated activity of polyphosphate NAD-kinase. Highly pure NADP was continuously produced in high yield by the immobilized cell column. The half-life of this column was about eight days.

Notes: N-Methyl-N-allylmethacrylamide (MAMA) was synthesized and polymerized with radical initiators, and the structure of poly-MAMA was studied, in order to establish the concept that difunctional monomers having monofunctional counterparts which do not polymerize are likely to give rise to highly cyclized polymer, if the cyclized polymer is in a lower free-energy level than the monomer. The cyclopolymerizability of MAMA was considerably higher than that of N-allylmethacrylamide, which was previously reported, and its monofunctional counterpart can be polymerized. The extent of cyclization of poly-MAMA was about 93%, even in the polymer obtained by bulk polymerization. The repeating units of poly-MAMA consist mainly of five-membered rings; six-membered rings and pendent methacryl groups were detected in addition as minor repeating components. The monofunctional counterparts of MAMA, i.e., N-methyl-N-n-propylmethacrylamide (MPMA) and N-methyl-N-allylisobutyramide (MAIA), were also synthesized. Neither MPMA nor MAIA showed any tendency toward polymerization under the same experimental conditions as used for MAMA. The results thus obtained all support the concept mentioned above.

Notes: Mechanistic investigations on the polymerization of N-methyl-N-allylmethacrylamide (MAMA) at lower temperature were carried out based upon the ESR studies of MAMA and its monofunctional counterparts irradiated with 60Co γ rays. Cyclopolymerizability of MAMA was also studied in connection with the hindered rotation about its amide C—N bond. The propagating radical observed is only related to the methacryl group but not to the allyl group both in MAMA and its monofunctional counterparts. Polymerization at -78°C yielded a polymer with a lower degree of cyclization(88.8%) as compared with that of polymers formed at higher temperatures (93.5% above 0°C). A structural study revealed that the increment of the unsaturation in the poly-MAMA obtained at -78°C is due to the allyl group and the content of pendant methacryl group is almost unchanged over the temperature range from -78 to 120°C. These results led to the conclusion that the polymerization of MAMA at -78°C proceeds mainly through the methacryl group, the rate-determining step is the cyclization reaction, and, in addition, cyclization reaction scarcely occurs when it polymerizes through the allyl group. Since MAMA is frozen into a glassy state, the effect of glass transition temperature (Tg) has been studied and it was suggested that the polymerization of MAMA proceeds only above Tg.

Notes: A single crystal of indium antimonide (zinc blende type InSb) was evaluated as an X-ray monochromator. The long 2d spacing of 7.481 Å makes it possible to diffract Si K α in an ordinary X-ray emission spectrometer. The indium antimonide data were compared with crystals of EDDT, Ge and LiF. Indium antimonide shows seven times higher Si Kα intensity than EDDT. It also has very low second order reflection. A low coefficient of thermal expansion (4.9 × 10-6 °C-1), together with its very stable chemical nature will facilitate high precision measurement ranging from 14Si to 46Pd(Kα), 38Sr to 92U(Lα) and 74W to 92U(Mα).

Notes: A method for correcting scattered fluorescent X-ray radiation arising from contaminants in a target of an X-ray tube is described. The universal correction factor was obtained by measuring the intensity ratio of a characteristic radiation of an analytical element to a background radiation on a reference standard which contains none of the analytical element. The correction was performed by subtracting the intensity ratio of the reference standard from that of a sample. The method requires no calculation of correcting factors.

Notes: Polyunsaturated fatty acids of human serum were analysed by combination gas-liquid chromatography and chemical ionization mass spectrometry, using isobutane as the reagent gas. The method described yielded the molecular ion of long chain unsaturated fatty acids as the base peak; these were weak or unobservable in the corresponding electron impact mass spectra. In the chemical ionization mass spectromtery, the derivatization with trimethylsilyl ether was demonstrated to be useful for the location of the double bonds of unsaturated fatty acids. Applied to the serum polyunsaturated fatty acids, these methods have given identification of C18:4, C20:4, C20:5, C22:4, C22:5ω-6, C22:5ω-3, and C22:6.

Notes: The radical anion and the radical cation of azuleno[1,2,3-cd]phenalene (III) have been investigated by ESR. spectroscopy, along with the radical anion of 2-phenylazulene (IV). Also studied has been the neutral radical obtained by one-electron reduction of cyclohepta[cd]phenalenium-cation (VI⊕). Assignment of the proton coupling constants for the radical ions III. ·⊖, III ·⊕ and IV·⊕, and the radical VI · is supported by comparison with the ESR. spectra of specifically deuteriated derivatives III-d5 ·⊖, III-d5 ·⊕, IV-d2 ·⊖ and VI-d1′. The experimental results are in full accord with qualitative topological arguments and predictions of HMO models. Whereas the radical anion III ·⊖ exhibits α-spin distribution similar to that of IV ·⊖the corresponding radical cation III ·⊕ and the neutral radical VI · are related in this respect to phenalenyl (V·). It is noteworthy that oxidation of III by conc. H2SO4 yields a paramagnetic species (IIIa ·⊕) which has a similar - but not an identical - structure as the radical cation III ·⊕ produced from III with AlCl3 in CH3NO2.
