Description: A Mw 7.2 earthquake struck the south flank of Kilauea, Hawaii, on May 4 2018, following a period of volcanic unrest. To investigate its relationship with the stress changes induced by prior tectonic and magmatic activity, we model the co‐seismic slip distribution, pre‐intrusion deformation and dike intrusion using geodetic, seismic and tsunami observations. The décollement beneath the south‐flank was creeping seaward by ~25 cm/yr. Diking started on April 20 and lead to fissures eruption on May 3. The magmatic activity and creep resulted in an on‐shore U‐shaped zone of stress unloading, fringed by an off‐shore zone of stress build up which apparently guided the 2018 rupture. It takes only 20 to 35 years at the pre‐intrusion rate to accumulate a moment deficit equivalent to the moment that was released in 2018. This event falls short of balancing the moment budget since the 1975, Mw 7.7 earthquake.

Description: Real-time GPS is nowadays considered as a valuable component of next generation near-field tsunami early warning systems able to provide fast and reliable source parameters. Looking for optimal methodologies and assessing corresponding uncertainties becomes an important task. We take the opportunity and consider the 2014 Pisagua event as a case study to explore tsunami forecast uncertainty related to the GPS-based source inversion. We intentionally neglect all other sources of uncertainty (observation set, signal processing, wave simulation, etc.) and exclusively assess the effect of inversion technique. In particular, we compare three end-member methods: (1) point-source fastCMT (centroid moment tensor) (2) distributed slip along pre-defined plate interface and (3) unconstrained inversion into a single uniform-slip finite fault. The three methods provide significantly different far-field tsunami forecast but show surprisingly similar tsunami predictions in the near-field.

Description: ABSTRACT Aflatoxin B 1 is known as a mycotoxin that develops various health problems of animals, the effects of AFB 1 on thymus and bursa of Fabricius in chickens are not clear. The objective of this study was to investigate the apoptosis of thymus and bursa of Fabricius in broilers fed with AFB 1 . Two hundred Avian broilers were randomly divided into four groups of 50 each, namely control group and three AFB 1 groups fed with 0.15 mg, 0.3 mg, and 0.6 mg AFB 1 /kg diet, respectively. In this study, flow cytometer and immunohistochemical approaches were used to determine the percentage of apoptotic cells and the expression of Bax, Bcl-2, and Caspase-3. The results showed that consumption of AFB 1 diets results in increased percentage of apoptotic cells and increased expression of Caspase-3 in both thymus and bursa of Fabricius. The expression of Bax was increased and the expression of Bcl-2 was decreased in the thymus, but no significant changes in Bax and Bcl-2 expression were observed in the bursa of Fabricius when broilers fed with AFB 1 . These findings suggest that adverse effects of AFB 1 on thymus and bursa of Fabricius in broilers were confirmed by increased apoptotic cells and abnormal expression of Caspase-3. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Description: Abstract We determine the fault geometry and kinematic slip models of the 2019 Mw 7.7 and 2000 Mw 8.0 earthquakes in Papua New Guinea using measurements from optical image correlation and teleseismic waveforms. The 2000 earthquake ruptured an extensive fault system over a distance of ~150 km including the entire 60‐km long onshore segment of the Weitin fault and its offshore continuation southeast of New Ireland. The northern portion of the onshore Weitin fault segment ruptured again in 2019. Most of the moment was released by a compact, shallow, high stress‐drop slip patch on the northwestern continuation of the Weitin fault in the Saint George Channel, which was brought closer to failure by the 2000 earthquake. The two ruptures overlap over about 20 km but in fact mostly complement each other. Large dynamic stresses may have driven the partial rerupture of the Weitin fault during the 2019 event.
