Notes: Abstract Numerical solutions of the oxygen-diffusion problem arising in the oxidation of metals at high temperatures are complicated by the change in density as the oxide is formed and the occurrence of moving boundaries separating the different phases. The former complication is resolved by a transformation of the dependent variable and the coordinate, which reduces the problem to a form identical to one without density change. The latter complication is dealt with by demonstrating an analogy with the Stefan problem in heat transfer with phase change in the enthalpy formulation, for which abundant numerical works exist. A finite-difference code is written to solve the resulting equations. It is successfully applied to simulate an oxidation experiment of Zircaloy by steam at 1600°C.

Notes: Summary Nicotine, in concentrations of 5 and 25 μg/ml drinking water, given ad libitum for 10 days, dose-dependently increased lesion formation and worsened ethanol-induced ulceration in rat stomachs. Daily fluid intake and b.wt gain were not adversely affected by nicotine pretreatment.

Notes: Summary The schistosomicides, hycanthone, oxamniquine and praziquantel, were found to inhibit the in vitro RNA synthesis using isolated hamster liver nuclei. Preincubation of the nuclei with these drugs revealed that the inhibitory effect of oxamniquine was irreversible and progressed with time, whereas that of hycanthone and parziquantel was reversible. On the other hand, hycanthone and praziquantel have a high affinity for DNA but oxamniquine does not. The data indicate that the mechanism of inhibition by oxamniquine is different from that of hycanthone and praziquantel.

Notes: Abstract Three hydrographic surveys were carried out in Deep Bay, which is located in the eastern part of Pearl estuary between Shenzhen, the most successful special economic zone of PRC, and Hong Kong. Data on current, size distributions of bottom sediment, suspended solids, and some water quality parameters were obtained. This information is of value for mathematical modeling of tidal circulation and sediment transport in the bay, and also useful in the planning of further development in this area. The sedimentation rate in Deep Bay was estimated by two different approaches, viz. comparison of historical navigation maps and210Pb dating. Information obtained from the maps indicated that average sedimentation rate between 1898 and 1949 was about 8 mm/yr, while a 15 mm/yr figure was obtained from the210Pb dating for recent years.

Notes: Abstract The effects of tin doping on the deep-level photoluminescence (PL) spectra of (LEC) InP were studied. Specifically, the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the deep emission bands labelled as band A (1.13 eV), band B (1.06 eV), band C (1.20 eV) and band D (0.97 eV) were investigated. Band A appeared in both undoped and doped samples, but it disappeared after RTA for all the samples. It is suggested that band A is due to the formation of a complex involving VIn with residual impurities. The disappearance of band A after RTA is concomitant with the appearance of bands B, C and D. The existence of band B is attributed to the complex formation of VP with residual impurities. Band C was observed after the annealing process both in undoped and lightly-tin-doped samples and is believed to be due to the formation of VP single point defects. Band D was only observed in heavily doped samples and it is believed to be the effect of InP antisite defects.

Notes: Abstract The treatment and disposal of pig-waste in Hong Kong has received much attention in recent years but, following any of the presently used treatment processes, solids remain to be further stabilized. Vermicomposting is a waste stabilization technique which converts waste into potentially recyclable materials such as worm protein and worm casts. The earthworm, Pheretima asiatica, can stabilize most of the solids arising from the treatment of pig-waste, including raw pig manure, suggesting that vermicomposting has a high potential as a unit process in the management of pig-waste in Hong Kong.

Notes: The kerA gene which encodes the enzyme keratinase was isolated from the feather-degrading bacterium Bacillus licheniformis PWD-1. The entire gene, including pre-, pro- and mature protein regions, was cloned with Pker, its own promoter, P43, the vegetative growth promoter, or the combination of P43-Pker into plasmid pUB18. Transformation of the protease-deficient strain B. subtilis DB104 with these plasmids generated transformant strains FDB-3, FDB-108 and FDB-29 respectively. All transformants expressed active keratinase in both feather and LB media, in contrast to PWD-1, in which kerA was repressed when grown in LB medium. With P43-Pker upstream of kerA, FDB-29 displayed the highest activity in feather medium. Production of keratinase in PWD-1 and transformants was further characterized when glucose or casamino acids were supplemented into the feather medium. These studies help understand the regulation of kerA expression and, in the long run, can help strain development and medium conditioning for the production of this industrially important keratinase.

Notes: Summary This study concerns the characterization of chromosomes with hybrid genes for Hb Lepore-Washington (44 chromosomes), for Hb Lepore-Baltimore (5 chromosomes), for Hb P-Nilotic (8 chromosomes), and for Hb Kenya (7 chromosomes) by determining a relatively large number of restriction enzyme polymorphism. Two, and possibly three, different Hb Lepore-Washington chromosomes were identified by specific haplotypes, while the haplotype of the Hb Lepore-Baltimore chromosome had its own characteristic pattern. A likely conclusion is that the crossovers leading to the formation of these chromosomes have occurred as independent events within the populations. Chromosomes with the δβ-Lepore-Washington hybrid gene maintained specific characteristies (such as increased Hb F levels in heterozygotes, and high or low Gγ values in this Hb F) which have been observed in normal individuals with chromosomes having comparable haplotypes. Only one haplotype was observed for each of the chromosomes carrying either the βδ-P-Nilotic hybrid gene or the Aγβ hybrid gene of Hb Kenya.
