Notes: Abstract Annual coastal land loss in the sedimentary deltaic plain of southern Louisiana is 102 km2, which is correlated with man-made canal surface area. The relationships between land loss and canals are both direct and indirect and are modified by the deltaic substrate, distance to the coast, and availability of new sediments. Loss rates are highest in the youngest of the former deltas nearest the coast; they are lowest in the more consolidated sediments far from the coast. The average estimate for land loss at zero canal density in the six regression equations developed was 0.09%±0.13% annually, the present land loss rates approach 0 8% annually Although additional analyses are needed, we conclude that canals are causally related to a significant portion of the total coastal land loss rates The relation probably involves an interruption of local and regional hydrologic regimes. Reduction of the present acceleration in land loss rates is possible by managing present canals more effectively, by not permitting new ones, and by changing the design of new canals to allow more natural water flow

Notes: Abstract We present a parallel architecture for object recognition and location based on concurrent processing of depth and intensity image data. Parallel algorithms for curvature computation and segmentation of depth data into planar or curved surface patches, and edge detection and segmentation of intensity data into extended linear features, are described. Using this feature data in comparison with a CAD model, objects can be located in either depth or intensity images by a parallel pose clustering algorithm. The architecture is based on cooperating stages for low/intermediate level processing and for high level matching. Here, we discuss the use of individual components for depth and intensity data, and their realisation and integration within each parallel stage. We then present an analysis of the performance of each component, and of the system as a whole, demonstrating good parallel execution from raw image data to final pose.

Notes: Abstract Results of beaker scale and large laboratory scale experiments on the deposition of manganese from chloride electrolytes using selenium based additives are reported. High cathode efficiencies (85–90%) were obtained at moderate selenium levels (0.03–0.06 gl−1). Selenium pick-up in the deposit was lower when selenium was added as the selenate [Se(VI)]. A cost/benefit analysis of selenium additions is presented.

Notes: Abstract Results of beaker scale and large laboratory scale experiments on the deposition of manganese from chloride electrolytes are reported for conditions where chlorine is the secondary anode product. Manganese concentration in the catholyte was found to be the most significant variable, with higher manganese levels (to 33 g Mn l−1) resulting in higher current efficiency (65–70%) and lower power consumption (5.5 kWh kg−1). Temperature (30–60°C) and current density (1.0–2.0 kAm−2) had opposing effects on current efficiency and power consumption. In the ranges studied, lower temperatures and higher current densities gave rise to increases in current efficiency and power consumption. The literature on the electrowinning of manganese from chloride electrolytes is reviewed and the anomalies in previous reports discussed.

Notes: Summary Incidence in the field of crop disorders known to be due to localised calcium deficiency bears little relation to soil calcium status, and is more often associated with particular types of weather. We are suggesting that brief periods of soil partial anaerobiosis following wet weather, and other unfavourable soil physical conditions such as compaction, lead to a temporary reduction in the distal, undifferentiated region of roots from which the majority of the calcium taken up is transported to the shoot. This might lead to a transient calcium deficiency in rapidly growing shoot tissues, and thence to necrosis.

Notes: Summary A pot experiment with lettuce involving three N forms each at six application levels, showed that lettuce can be grown satisfactorily with a very low nitrate content when supplied with ammonium sulphate and a nitrification inhibitor. For plants growing on nitrate N, the optimum midrib sap nitrate concentration as maturity approached was about 1400 mg/1 NO3-N. Large losses of mineral N were observed from the peat medium, even in the absence of plants. A relationship is presented which would enable a lettuce grower to estimate whole-shoot nitrate concentration from a quick test of midrib sapi.e. NO3-N (mg/kg in fresh shoot) =0.14×NO3-N (mg/l in sap). Tipburn was worst at intermediate levels of applied N, and was less serious with pure ammonium nutrition than with nitrate.
