    Notes: Abstract. We report on the first successful lateral manipulation of molecules and controlled formation of nanostructures with the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) at temperatures above 4 K as used by Eigler and collaborators. Among the first structures, we built the letters F and U forming the logo of our university at 30 K with CO molecules on a Cu(211) substrate. Our method to manipulate the molecules is analogous to that employed successfully up to now only by Eigler and co-workers. First experiences concerning the manipulation of the CO molecules on the highly anisotropic substrate are presented and the crucial role of the tip composition in imaging the CO molecules is demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract Results of ir and Raman investigations on trigonal layer-structured Si2Te3 single crystals are reported. The ir reflection spectrum withE⊥c exhibits seven reststrahl-like bands, whereas the corresponding spectrum withE∥c shows only one very small bump. Values forε 0 andε ∞ are given. The Raman spectra are very rich in structure and can only be interpreted qualitatively as being a mixture of single phonon lines and one- and two-phonon density-of-states contributions. One-phonon density-of-states effects are disorder-induced owing to the statistical occurrence of the Si atoms within the regular hexagonal Te sublattice.

    Notes: Abstract Sb5O7I undergoes a displacive phase transition at 481 K where the symmetry is changed fromC 6h 2 toC 2h 5 . In the low temperature monoclinic phase the crystal is ferroelastic. The polarized Raman spectra of Sb5O7I have been measured at various temperatures below and above the phase transition. The frequencies and symmetries of most of the theoretically expected Raman active phonons in the ferroelastic phase have been determined. The observation of a soft mode in the ferroelastic phase which disappears above the phase transition together with the fact that the unit cell of the ferroelastic phase is twice as large as that of the paraelastic structure permits the conclusion that the phase transition results from a phonon instability at the Brillouin zone boundaryM-point of the hexagonal phase. The temperature dependent splittings and intensity changes of several Raman lines are discussed with respect to the ferroelastic property of the crystal and the phase transition.

    Notes: Abstract The polytype 2MA (β-Sb5O7I) has the simplest acentric structure of the antimony oxideiodide family. It undergoes an antiferrodistortive phase transition at 438K and is both ferroelectric and ferroelastic below that temperature. The complete polarized Raman spectra in the ferroic phase have been measured and compared with those of the ferroelastic, centric polytype 2MC (α-Sb5O7I). Several lines could be attributed to Sb—0 and Sb—I vibrations. A factor group analysis has been performed and compatibility relations have been established connecting phonon species in the low and high temperature phase. As a function of temperature the spectra revealed a strongly temperature dependent central line and several phonon lines whose intensities vanish aboveT c . Using these phonon line intensities the temperature variation of the order parameter could be determined. The experimental results indicate that the phase transition is of first order.

    Notes: Abstract The fcc(110) surfaces are well known for their strong tendency to missing-row (MR) type reconstructions either in the clean state (Au, Pt) or driven by adsorbates (Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag). The present knowledge on the different reconstruction behaviour of flat (110) surfaces is reviewed. The survey focuses on recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies, which for the first time also elucidate the dynamics of the reconstruction process for the various systems. An overview of our recent STM and low energy electron diffraction studies on vicinal Au(110) and Ni(110) surfaces is given, aiming for a deeper understanding of the influence of steps on reconstruction behaviour of fcc(110) surfaces on the one hand, and on the stability of reconstructing vicinal surfaces on the other. Finally, we report on the reconstruction behaviour of Ir(110), which stabilizes in the clean state by formation of mesoscopic (331) facets and dereconstructs to the (1×1) phase upon oxygen adsorption at 700–900 K.

    Notes: Abstract Surface-structure models for the 2×1 and 1×2 hydrogen chemisorption phases formed on Pd(110) at 100 K have been derived from He-diffraction data. The respective coverages correspond to 1 and 1.5 monolayers (ML). Upon heating to 200 K, the 1×2 saturation phase transforms back into the 2×1, and 0.5 ML hydrogen moves subsurface. Based on structural arguments, we suggest that only the first available subsurface sites, i.e., the octahedral interstitials between topmost and second layers are populated by thermal activation. The subsurface movement is eased since H-chemisorption sites on top of the second Pd layer can be occupied in the 1×2 owing to substrate reconstruction. Structural considerations also explain that exactly 1 ML H can be accommodated subsurface by thermal cycling. New TDS measurements corroborate these notions: only the α2 desorption state, probably associated with Hin subsurface sites between first and second Pdlayers, is selectively filled by the thermal-cycling processes. The α1 state remains empty upon thermal cycling, and is very likely connected with hydrogen deeper in the bulk.

    Notes: Abstract Apart from its ability to image surfaces with atomic resolution the scanning tunneling microscope has evolved as a tool to manipulate single atoms and molecules. In this paper we present several examples of atomic manipulation and the formation of nanostructures with this technique. As examples for lateral manipulation, i.e. the sliding of atoms and molecules along the surface, we show CO, C2H4 and Pb on a stepped copper surface, the Cu(211). As examples for vertical manipulation, i.e. the transfer of atoms and molecules between the tip and the surface, we discuss Xe and C3H6. The design of our low temperature scanning tunneling microscope is shortly described.
