    Notes: Abstract Intracellular distributions of K+, Mg2+ and orthophosphate under various conditions of cultivation or incubation of the yeast Saccharomyces carlsbergensis were studied by differential extraction of ion pools. The decisive role of vacuolar compartmentation of ions in regulation of K+, Mg2+ and orthophosphate levels in the yeast cytoplasm was shown. The content of intracellular K+ and Mg2+ in yeast increased or decreased primarily depending on the increase or decrease in the vacuolar ion pool. The levels of K+ and Mg2+ in the cytoplasm were practically unchanged. Vacuoles were involved in regulation of Mn2+ concentration in the cytoplasm of the yeast S. carlsbergensis accumulating this ion in the presence of glucose. Alongside the vacuolar compartmentation, the chemical compartmentation, i. e. formation of bound Mg2+, Mn2+ and K+ was, evidently, also involved in the control of ion levels in the cytoplasm. The orthophosphate level in the yeast cytoplasm was regulated by its accumulation in vacuoles and biosynthesis of inorganic polyphosphates in these organelles. The biosynthesis of low-molecular weight polyphosphates occurred parallel to the accumulation of Mg2+ or Mn2+ in vacuoles, thus confirming the availability of the other mechanism for the transport of these ions through the tonoplast differing from the transport mechanism through the plasmalemma.

    Notes: Abstract To detect scattering by magnetic correlations and to estimate their characteristic space scale, YBa2(Cu1−x Fex)3O7+y ceramic with x=0.13 and y=0.4 is investigated by the small-angle scattering of polarized neutrons. The measurements are carried out in the range of temperatures 15 K⩽T⩽315 K and magnetic fields 0〈H⩽4500 Oe. Anomalies in the temperature curves of the intensity I(T,q) (where q is the momentum transfer) and the polarization P(T,q) are observed in the temperature range T〈40 K. Interference between nuclear and magnetic scattering is also observed in this temperature range. The observed phenomena are interpreted as scattering by magnetic correlations having a scale 70 Å〈R〈370 Å. Irreversible effects and the type of magnetic ordering are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A magnetic phase transition in carbon-doped (0.1 and 0.7 at. %) Fe70Ni30 Invar alloys was investigated by the method of depolarization of a transmitted neutron beam and by small-angle scattering of polarized neutrons. It is shown that for both alloys, two characteristic length scales of magnetic correlations coexist above T c. Small-angle scattering by critical correlations with radius R c is described well by the Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) expression. The longer-scale (second) correlations, whose size can be estimated from depolarization data, are not described by the OZ expression, and hypothetically can be modeled by a squared OZ expression, which in coordinate space corresponds to the relation 〈M(r)M(0)〉∝exp(−r/R d), where R d is the correlation length of the second scale. The temperature dependence of the correlation radius R c was obtained: R c ∝ ((T−T c)/Tc)−ν , where ν≈2/3 is the critical exponent for ferromagnets, over a wide temperature range up to T c exp , at which the correlation radius becomes constant and equals its maximum value R c(T c)=R c max . The maximum correlation radius established (R c max =140 Å and 230 Å for the first and second alloys, respectively) characterizes the length-scale of the fluctuation for which the appearance of critical correlations first results in the formation of a ferromagnetic phase, and the phenomenon itself exhibits a “disruption” of the second-order phase transition at T=T c exp , as a result of which a first-order transition arises. Temperature hysteresis was also detected in the measured polarization of the transmitted beam and intensity of small-angle neutron scattering in the alloy above T c, confirming the character of this magnetic transition as a first-order transition close to a second-order transition.

    Notes: Abstract The magnetic phase transition in the Invar alloy Fe70Ni30 is investigated by means of small-angle neutron scattering over a wide range of momentum transfer. This method was used to measure two magnetic correlation lengths R c 1 and R c 2 which coexist in the alloy above the phase transition temperature T c . The critical correlations with correlation length R c 1 are described well by an Ornstein-Zernicke expression, and the critical correlations with the second correlation length, an order of magnitude larger than R c 2, are described well by a squared Ornstein-Zernicke expression. The temperature dependences obtained for the correlation lengths R c 1 and R c 2 satisfy the power law R c ∼((T−T c )/T c ) −υ with critical exponents υ1=0.65±0.05 and υ2=1.3±0.1 for the shorter and longer scales, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The results of measurements of spin correlations and magnetonuclear cross-correlations (MNCCs) in the system 154Sm1−x SrxMnO3 with the perovskite structure (x=0.25,0.4) in the low-temperature phase in magnetic fields 0〈H〈1 kOe are presented. These are the first measurements performed by the small-angle polarized-neutron scattering method (SAPNS). It is shown that ferromagnetic correlations with a scale of 180–250 Å and MNCCs characterizing the intercoupling of the magnetic and lattice subsystems on this scale exist in the system. It is found that in the low-temperature phase the system exhibits spin-glass properties.

    Notes: Abstract Results are presented of studies of the 154Sm1−x SrxMnO3 system using neutron powder diffraction and small-angle polarized neutron scattering. An analysis of the neutron diffraction spectra showed that at T 〈 180 K these exhibit typical Jahn-Teller distortions of the manganese-oxygen octahedrons which persist under further cooling and on transition of the sample to a metallic magnetically ordered state. The magnetic contribution to the diffraction is satisfactorily described using the (A x (A y )F z ) model and is interpreted as the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The exaggerated widths of the diffraction lines indicate an appreciable contribution from microdeformations evidently associated with the inhomogeneity of the system. Small-angle polarized neutron scattering showed that the Sm system for x = 0.4 and 0.25 is magnetically inhomogeneous in the low-temperature phase. Ferromagnetic correlations occur on scales of around 200 Å and having dimensions greater than 1000 Å which, combined with the temperature hysteresis of the magnetic small-angle scattering intensity observed for an x = 0.4 sample in the low-temperature phase, suggests that the transition is of a percolation nature.
