Notes: Abstract  The Holocene filling of the Tinto-Odiel Estuary comprises seven lithofacies over a Mio-Pliocene substrate. The sequence includes three system tracts: lowstand system (10 000 to 8700 years BP), transgressive system (8700 to 7000 years BP), and regressive system (7000 to Recent). Twenty sediment samples from the 50-m borehole were analyzed for their major components and minor element concentrations. Two multivariate analysis methods, principal component analysis and cluster analysis, were performed in the analytical data set to help visualize the sample clusters and the element associations. Samples corresponding to unpolluted, pre-mining sediments are clearly separated by cluster analysis, mainly as a result of the low content in sulphide-associated heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, As, Ag, and Pb. So, these sediments may be utilized as a background for geochemical analysis (bulk sample) in other adjacent estuaries, both in sandy and silty-clayey sediments. As a consequence of large-scale mining and smelting operations occurred since prehistoric times on the river banks, a rapid rise in the metal pollution was found in the upper 2.5 m of the natural filling, with values exceeding up to ten times the natural background levels. In addition, since the mid-1960s, large amounts of waste and pollutant effluents have been discharged from industries located around the estuary, increasing the heavy metal content in the last 0.3 m of the natural sedimentation.

Notes: Abstract Microwave surface resistance measurement constitutes one of the most advantageous procedures for the investigation and characterization of the new superconducting oxides. Keeping in mind that the bulk ceramic materials usually have cylindrical symmetry, a new automatic measuring system, based on a resonant cavity, has been developed with special emphasis on superconducting pellets. The resolution capability of our system is pointed out by measuring the surface resistance of YBCO and BSCCO samples.

Notes: Abstract The time dependence of the field-cooled susceptibility in polycrystalline samples of YBa2Cu3O7 has been studied in the temperature range 77–95 K. Field-cooled and zero-field-cooled susceptibility measurements and its variation with the ac magnetic field are also reported. Measurements have been carried out by means of an inductive technique. Our fully automatic system allows us to measure the first data points of field-cooled susceptibility versus time from the beginning of the magnetic relaxation just after removing the field.

Notes: Abstract. FerroMagnetic Resonance (FMR) measurements of polycrystalline nickel ferrites at 11 GHz from 77 to 400 K have been carried out. The different contributions to the FMR linewidth have been studied by a computational technique based on the parameters previously obtained for single-crystal nickel ferrite. A new qualitative comparison between the FMR and disaccommodation measurements by means of the induced anisotropy formalism is presented.

Notes: Abstract.  Silica may dissolve up to about 0.05 wt% in an iron excess NiZnCo spinel matrix, affecting noticeably the magnetic properties at low and high values of the applied field. The initial permeability is reduced by about 50% with the addition of only 0.1% SiO2, while the coercivity almost triples, without noticeable changes in porosity or grain distribution. The vacancy and Fe2+ content of the sintered material also show a considerable change. The energy associated to the transformation Fe3+→Fe2+ for the samples without SiO2 was found to be 0.41–0.42 eV, while for the samples with SiO2 additions it decreased to 0.26 eV. The changes in magnetic properties are thought to be caused, more than because of the mentioned changes in ion distribution, by the stresses and defects created in the lattice due to the very small size of the Si4+ ion, which substitutes Fe3+ ions in tetrahedral sites. The transition Fe3+→Fe2+ seems to take place exclusively in the octahedral sites.

Notes: Abstract The nanosecond pulses of a dye laser oscillator based on the excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer reaction (IPT) of salicylamide and 2′-hydroxylphenyl benzimidazole dyes have been studied as a function of several experimental parameters. To explain the operation of this laser a numerical four-level kinetic model was developed until the lasing properties of these dyes, in the presence of a variable oxygen concentration and pumped with a double pulse technique, could be reproduced. This was possible only by assuming that the efficiency of the laser is controlled by the absorption cross-section of a transient state with a lifetime in the nanosecond-picosecond range, which was tentatively identified as a ground state tautomeric species.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic disaccommodation is investigated for ferrous ferrites with normal spinel structure. This study shows the presence of a new relaxation process in the temperature region IV (≃285 K) that has not been detected in inverse spinels. A numerical analysis of the isochronal spectra reveals that it is composed of two simple Debye processes with activation energies close to 0.75 eV and 0.80 eV, and preexponential factors 3×10−13 s. This relaxation is attributed to the formation of an induced anisotropy due to jumps of B-Fe ions into vacancies (as process III), but in presence of a divalent cation occupying an A-site.

Notes: Abstract The stretched-exponential or Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function has been widely used in the description of a large variety of relaxation phenomena in condensed matter physics. In this work, we consider this approach as a fundamental law and extend its applicability range to thermally activated relaxation processes. A non-iterative and robust technique is developed in order to obtain the characteristic parameters of this type of phenomena. The method is based on a set of closed-form expressions for the amplitude, activation energy, pre-exponential factor and stretched-exponent that can be directly computed from isothermal curves. This strategy is applied to describe the magnetic disaccommodation spectra observed around room temperature in a magnetite sample.
