Notes: Abstract A three-allele variant with Gc 2, Gc 1F and Gc 1A2 alleles was detected in both a baby and his mother during paternity testing by isoelectric focusing. His father had a normal Gc phenotype, Gc 2-1F. Further examination of his mother's relatives revealed that his grandfather also had the same three-allele variant, while his grandmother and his aunt had normal Gc 2-1F and Gc 2-2. From these results, it was considered that the Gc 1F and Gc 1A2 alleles were on the same single chromosome. It was suggested that recombination had occurred between two chromosomes that had the Gc 1F and Gc 1A2 allele, respectively, forming the variant allele Gc 1F1A2 on a single chromosome.

Notes: Abstract The genetic polymorphism of drug oxidation mediated by cytochrome P450IID6 (CYP2D6) was determined in 154 Polish volunteers using debrisoquine as the test substance. The results showed a bimodal distribution of the debrisoquine metabolic ratio (MR). Nine persons (5.8%) with MR〉12.6 were classified as poor metabolisers (gene frequency 0.242), which is in substantial agreement with the data reported for other Caucasian populations.

Notes: Abstract Excitation of upper hybrid waves associated with the ionospheric heating experiments is assumed to be essential in explaining some of the features of stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE). A direct conversion process is proposed as an excitation mechanism of the upper hybrid waves where the energy of an obliquely propagating electromagnetic pump wave is converted into the electrostatic upper hybrid waves due to small-scale density irregularities. We performed electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate the energy conversion process in the ionospheric heating experiments. We studied dependence of the amplitude of the excited wave on the propagation angle of the pump wave, scale length of the density irregularity, degree of the irregularity, and thermal velocity of the plasma. The maximum amplitude is found to be 37% of the pump amplitude under an optimum condition.

Notes: Summary In this investigation, the authors developed two new procedures: a micromethod for haptoglobin purification and the isoelectric focusing electrophoresis on slab polyacrylamide gel for peptide subtyping. These technics are adapted to the study of large sample series for population genetic surveys. The improvements obtained enabled us to disclose in an easy and highly reproducible way the Hp α and α2 peptide chains. Electrophoretic separation of the α2 FS, SS, and FF chains were greatly improved. Their frequencies estimated in a sample already investigated by the conventional PAGE presented higher values than previously described. New Hp α and α2 mutants were also detected. For the first time, isoelectric points of the Hp peptides were determined; the values obtained are discussed with regard to their known amino acid structure.

Notes: Summary To investigate the possibility that delection en bloc in the HLA region had caused the combined deficiency of neuraminidase and 21-hydroxylase in a female patient, genetic markers on the short arm of chromosome 6 were examined in the patient and her parents, and 21-hydroxylase genes of the patient were analyzed by the Southern blot technique. The affected “extended haplotype” identical by descent might have been recombined at two sites, between HLA-A and C and between HLA-DQ and GLO. This suggests that the neuraminidase gene is mapped between HLA-A and GLO. Southern blot analysis revealed the existence of two 21-hydroxylase genes, so that we found no evidence to support the possibility that deletion en bloc in the HLA class III region had caused the combined deficiency of neuraminidase and 21-hydroxylase.

Notes: Abstract. Gm immunoglobulin allotypes have been studied in 1157 individuals of seven Northern Selkup populations, which account for 80% of the entire population of this west Siberian tribe. This study confirms that the northern Selkup populations are a Caucasoid-Mongoloid hybrid. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the IGHG genes using double BamHI-SacI digests, performed on 475 DNA samples, allowed us to describe nine new BamHI-SacI haplotypes (BS47 to BS55), eight of them being characterized by IGHG gene deletion or duplication: G1 (BS49) or G4 (BS55) deletion, G4 duplication (BS51), GP-G2-G4 multigene deletion (BS50), duplication (BS48, BS53 and BS54) or triplication (BS52). A new rare Gm haplotype 15,16*;1,17;23 has been found associated with BS52. The BS51 haplotype characterized by a duplicated G4 gene (additional 7.85 kb G4 band identifying a new G4*C5 allele) was always found associated with the Gm 5*;3;23 haplotype. A high RFLP diversity has been observed for the Northern-Mongoloid haplotype Gm 15,16*;1,17;.. which was found (1) with the BS27 haplotype characterized by a 3-exon hinge G3 gene, (2) with two different GP-G2-G4 multigene duplications, BS53 and BS54 haplotypes, which differ by the size of the duplicated G4 genes, and (3) with the BS55 haplotype characterized by a G4 deletion. In the Northern Selkups, haplotypes with duplicated genes were observed at a higher frequency (24%) than haplotypes with deleted genes (6%).

Notes: Summary Six newly observed Gc variants are described. The variants Gc 1A10, 1A11, 1A12, 1A13, and 1C11 have double band patterns. The anodal bands of these variants are susceptible to neuraminidase treatment. Gc 2A7 is a single band variant which is not altered by neuraminidase incubation. Polyacrylamide gel isoelectrofocusing with immunofixation and polyarcylamide gel electrophoresis appear to be efficient methods for the analysis of the Gc system.

Notes: Abstract. The effect of disaccharide lepidimoide on light-induced chlorophyll accumulation was studied in cotyledons of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seedlings and detached cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledons. From studies on the structure-activity relationships of lepidimoide, its analogs, and sucrose with respect to light-induced chlorophyll accumulation in the cotyledons of sunflower seedlings, both lepidimoide and the free carboxylic acid of lepidimoide (lepidimoic acid) showed the highest promoting activity, whereas the hydrogenated lepidimoide, which lacks a double bond in the C4, 5 position in uronic acid, showed lower activity than lepidimoide; however, sucrose exhibited very weak activity. These results suggest that lepidimoide acts as a new type of plant growth regulator, not simply as a carbon source providing energy. Lepidimoide promoted not only light-induced chlorophyll accumulation in sunflower cotyledons but also light-induced 5-aminolevulinic acid content, which is considered to be a rate-limiting step in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Lepidimoide with cytokinin stimulated the accumulation of chlorophyll and 5-aminolevulinic acid additively. In detached cucumber cotyledons, lepidimoide also promoted light-induced chlorophyll accumulation. These results indicate that lepidimoide, in cooperation with cytokinin, causes light-induced chlorophyll accumulation in the cotyledons of several dicot plant species by affecting the level of 5-aminolevulinic acid.
