Notes: Abstract Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a lysosomal storage disease with autosomal recessive inheritance caused by a deficiency of the enzyme arylsulfatase A (ASA). We have identified a new mutation in the ASA gene of a patient with adult-type MLD. In this mutation, the glycine at position 122, a highly conserved residue in the AS gene family, was replaced by serine. In a transient expression study, COS cells transfected with the mutant cDNA carrying 122Gly→Ser did not show an increase of ASA activity and produced little material immunoreactive to an anti-ASA antibody, despite normal mRNA levels.

Notes: Summary The therapeutic effects of vitamin D analogs, 1,24(R)-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,24(R)(OH)2D3], 1,24(S)-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,24(S)(OH)2D3], and 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D3] on immobilization osteoporosis were studied in rats. The right hind limb was immobilized through application of a plaster cast following the section of the sciatic nerve. The left hind limb was intact. Vitamin D analogs were orally administered for 6 weeks at dose levels of 0.02 and 0.10µg/kg/day, respectively. The mean lengths of the immobilized femurs were not significantly different from those of the intact femurs in all the experimental groups. In the immobilized femur of animals treated with 1,24(R)(OH)2D3, 0.10µg/kg, dry and ash weights were heavier and calcium and phosphorus contents greater than those in the nontreated group. Furthermore, the amount of calcified bone mass and the cortical thickness of the femurs of the immobilized limb in 1,24(R)(OH)2D3-treated animals were greater than those in the nontreated animals. Treatment with 1,25(OH)2D3 at 0.10µg/kg caused an increase of the bone mass in both immobilized and intact femurs when compared with those of the control group. It was concluded that the administration of 1,24(R)(OH)2D3 diminished the effect of immobilization in the development of osteoporosis without any side effects.

Notes: Abstract We have prepared the recyclable colored glass plates of blue, green, or red by coating organic colorant dispersed silica sols. Phthalocyanine-type or diketopyrrolopyrrole-type compounds were used as colorants for colored coating and the sol coated glass plates were heat-treated at 300–400°C. The coating was done by using a dipping-withdrawing equipment designed originally for coating large sized glass plates with 2 m in length and 1 m in width. The colored coating films were uniform and transparent with low haze values less than 1.0% and with thickness of 120–540 nm. The visible light transmittance of the colored glass plates was controlled in the relatively wide range of 50–90% by changing the film thickness or the colorant concentration in the coating sols. The practical durabilities of the blue colored glass plate against abrasion, scratch, chemicals and UV-light were acceptable to the specification required for interior glass products.

Notes: Abstract New photochromic thin gel films have been prepared by the dipping method from a sol-gel coating solution containing Malachite Green Leucocyanide soluble in sol and super-fine dispersed solution of spiropyran or spironaphthooxazine, which was effective to increase the concentration of photochromic compounds in gel film. Photochromism of these gel films is compared with that in sol under the conditions of acid catalysis. Though in sols using spiropyran and Malachite Green Leucocyanide normal photochromism was not observed, photochromism in thin gel films prepared from the same sol was confirmed. Normal photochromism of spironaphthooxazine in thin gel films was similar to that in solution. The reaction rate from the colored form to the spiro form of spiropyran and spironaphthooxazine in thin gel film is dependent on the gel matrix, which is influenced by the reaction time of the sol.

Notes: Abstract Silica coating films with various surface morphologies, such as flat, porous (with deep pores), concave-convex (with hills and valleys), and convex (with hills on flat plane) structure were prepared from a mixture of two kinds of sols derived from polymerized tetraethoxy-silane (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES). Different surface morphologies were obtained by varying the molar ratio r = MTES/TEOS of the coating solution. The surface was flat for r less than 2.5, porous for 2.5 ≤ r 〈 5, concave-convex for 5 ≤ r 〈 7.5, convex for 7.5 ≤ r 〈 13, and again flat for r larger than 13. For 2.5 ≤ r 〈 5, the apparent refractive index of the silica film with porous morphology was decreased to 1.23 by selecting the solvent and by controlling the relative humidity of the coating atmosphere and the heat treatment temperature. Coating of glass with silica films of low refractive index of 1.23 led to the low reflective glasses with visible light reflectance Rvis of less than 0.2%.

Notes: Abstract Direct images of the Sun were photographed in continuum emission centered at 6900 Å by the jumping film method near the second contact of the Mexico eclipse on 7 March 1970. The band width was 150 Å defined by a combination of a sharp cut filter and KODAK IV F film. The intensity distribution of the solar outer layers obtained shows a steep decrease by a factor of 0.9 in logarithmic units around 2500 km. This is interpreted as the boundary of the chromosphere and corona. Spicules observed at 3500 km are explained by log n e = 11.25 and T e ≈ 6000 K. Discussions are made in relation to the other observations and some chromosphere models.

Notes: Abstract The equivalent widths of the TiO lines in the α system have been measured on a high dispersion (11 mm/Å) spectrogram of large sunspot. The lines were so weak that the measurement was made by methods giving maximum and minimum equivalent widths, depending on the adopted continuum. The rotational temperature obtained in this way was about 3000 °K. The result is unaffected by stray light because there are no TiO lines in the undisturbed spectrum. The calculation of equivalent widths using several sunspot models (all of which can satisfy the observed data) shows that the logarithmic optical depth at the effective layer of molecular line formation is about -1.6.

Notes: Abstract The survivorship of a monocarpic bamboo grass,Sasa kurilensis, during the early regeneration process was documented by a 10 year observation of the seedling population after mass flowering in the Hakkoda Mountains, northern Japan. Three phases were recognized: the establishment, density-stable and thinning phases. The mortality of the densely germinated seedlings (932.9m−2 in aBetula ermanii forest and 1222.3 m−2 in aSasa grassland) was high, up to 0.5 year−1, in the establishment phase (0–1 year after germination) and low in the density-stable phase (1–3 years after germination). After reaching full density state, the seedling population showed a nearly constant mortality of 0.18 year−1 due to self-thinning (the thinning phase). The high C/F ratio presumably caused suppressed seedlings to die. Recovery of theS. kurilensis population was estimated to requireca 20 years in the study plots, judging from the height growth and the decrease in culm density of the seedling population. The illuminance on the ground was higher in the flowered population than in the unflowered one for 5 years after mass death. The duration of high ground illuminance is an important factor affecting the dynamics of forests withSasa undergrowth, because tree seedlings need to establish under high ground illuminance for the successful regeneration of the forests.

Notes: Summary A selective and sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes in cigarette smoke by gas chromatography (GC) has been developed. After trapping of cigarette smoke into dilute hydrochloric acid containing ascorbic acid, aldehydes were converted into their thiazolidine derivatives by the reaction with cysteamine, and then measured by GC with flame photometric detection using two-connected fused-silica capillary columns containing DB-17 and DB-210, respectively. The derivatives were sufficiently volatile and gave single symmetrical peaks. The calibration curves for aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes in the range 20–2000 ng were linear and the detection limits at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were ca. 4–100 pg injected. Aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes in cigarette smoke could be selectively determined by this method without any interference from coexisting substances. Overall eecoveries of aldehydes added to cigarette smoke samples were 83–110%. Analytical results for the contents of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes in mainstream and sidestream smokes of several cigarettes are presented.
