Notes: Abstract Following fusion with hamster eggs, human sperm chromosomes from six Hodgkin's disease patients were analyzed to determine the genotoxic effects of therapy. Each patient had received two to six cycles of MOPP (nitrogen mustard, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone), with or without radiotherapy, from 3 to 20 years before the study. A total of 571 cells from the six patients were analyzed; 9.8% of the cells had structural aberrations, and 1.6% were hyperhaploid. Analysis of 5998 metaphases from a control group of 24 male donors revealed only 6.9% of cells with structural aberrations and 0.8% aneuploidy. The increase in hyperhaploidy in the patients was statistically significant. Thus, results of this study suggest that the MOPP regimen, with or without radiotherapy, is capable of causing chromosome abnormalities in the sperm of Hodgkin's disease patients.

Notes: Abstract Carbon nanotubes–nano-SiC ceramic has been fabricated by the hot-press method. The preparation steps involved the use of dispersing nano-SiC powders and carbon nanotubes in butylalcohol using an ultrasonic shaker. The reasonable relative density of about 95% has been achieved by hot-pressing at 2273 K (at 25 MPa in Ar for 1 h). The three-point bending strength and fracture toughness of the composite has about 10% increment over monolithic SiC ceramic which was fabricated under the same process. The reasons for the increment are the strengthening and toughening role of carbon nanotubes occuring in the matrix.

Notes: Abstract This paper estimates a two equation model of market entry and profits, utilizing data on entry into over 2,000 banking markets over the period 1977--88. The entry equations measure whether entry depends on incumbent firms' profits and other market attributes that reflect the long-term attractiveness of markets for entry. Market profits, assumed to follow a partial-adjustment process, are affected by entry directly and indirectly through market structure. The model also corrects for an unavoidable source of error in market-level profits for the banking industry. The estimates suggest that a competitive process is at work in banking markets that limits the ability of supra-normal profits to persist. Entry is more likely in markets that have high profits, consistent with previous empirical results that market structure adjusts more quickly when profits are supra-normal. Population and population growth are also strong determinants of entry. Entry, in turn, reduces profits in rural markets.

Notes: Abstract Price conjectural variations are estimated to measure the degree of price competition in a product differentiated oligopoly. The empirical model is a simultaneous equation system of product demand and price reaction functions. Own and cross price demand elasticities are estimated in conjunction with the price conjectural variations and price reaction function elasticities. The conjectural variations are estimated for pairs of ready-to-eat breakfast cereal products using brand price and quantity data. The empirical results reject competitive brand pricing behavior in favor of independent or collusive pricing. Further, the hypothesis of a unique consistent conjecture is rejected.

Notes: Abstract. Intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases trabecular bone mass in vivo by stimulating bone formation. To further characterize the cellular and molecular mediators of the anabolic response to PTH, we examined the effect of intermittent synthetic hPTH 1-34 on the expression and localization of selected early response genes, c-fos, c-jun, c-myc, and IL-6 protein, in bone tissue by immunohistochemistry. Young male Sprague-Dawley rats, 70–100 g, were injected s.c. with 8 μg/100 g PTH or vehicle control, once daily for 5 days. Femurs were harvested 1 and 24 hours after the fifth injection, then fixed, decalcified, processed for wax embedding, and sections were immunostained. Early response genes, c-fos, c-jun and IL-6, were strongly expressed in osteoblasts, osteocytes, and megakaryocytes in bones 1 hour after PTH, when compared with vehicle-treated controls or sections from rats, 24 hours after PTH injection. Osteoblasts, osteocytes, and megakaryocytes were also positive for c-myc but the differences in stain intensity between control and treated groups were marginal. Also, scattered islands of hematopoietic cells in the marrow stained intensely for IL-6 by 1 hour after PTH, but the stain intensity decreased to control level 24 hours after the last PTH injection. Scattered islands of hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow stained more strongly for c-fos than either c-jun or c-myc, but neither localization nor stain intensity were regulated by PTH at the time points examined. We conclude that during the immediate early phase of the anabolic response, PTH regulates c-fos, c-jun, and IL-6 expression in osteoblasts, osteocytes, megakaryocytes, and selected bone marrow hematopoietic cells in bone.

Notes: Abstract A comprehensive error compensation system has been developed to correct geometric, thermal, and cutting force-induced errors on a turning centre. The basic approach to error compensation is proposed in this paper. The implementation of error compensation control and of hardware configuration of the system are also presented. A total of 11 geometric and thermal error components and 10 cutting force-induced error components can be compensated for using this system. Performance evaluations have been carried out using actual cutting tests. Experimental results show that the diameter accuracy of the part has been improved more than 5 times and taper accuracy of the part has been improved about 5 times.

Notes: Abstract: This paper presents a text block extraction algorithm that takes as its input a set of text lines of a given document, and partitions the text lines into a set of text blocks, where each text block is associated with a set of homogeneous formatting attributes, e.g. text-alignment, indentation. The text block extraction algorithm described in this paper is probability based. We adopt an engineering approach to systematically characterising the text block structures based on a large document image database, and develop statistical methods to extract the text block structures from the image. All the probabilities are estimated from an extensive training set of various kinds of measurements among the text lines, and among the text blocks in the training data set. The off-line probabilities estimated in the training then drive all decisions in the on-line text block extraction. An iterative, relaxation-like method is used to find the partitioning solution that maximizes the joint probability. To evaluate the performance of our text block extraction algorithm, we used a three-fold validation method and developed a quantitative performance measure. The algorithm was evaluated on the UW-III database of some 1600 scanned document image pages. The text block extraction algorithm identifies and segments 91% of text blocks correctly.

Notes: Summary Groundwater control is a means of ensuring that no gas leakage occurs from unlined rock storage caverns. To achieve a better understanding of the principles of gas containment under groundwater and how to obtain maximum gas storage capacity, analyses of groundwater conditions surrounding storage caverns and the effects of different factors on gas storage capacity have been performed and are reported in this paper. The analysis results indicate that the critical gas pressure of a storage facility is considerably less than the natural hydrostatic pressure around the caverns and somewhat less than the water curtain pressure. High gas storage capacity can be obtained by optimizing the design of cavern configuration, water curtain layout, cavern depth, etc. The principles of such optimization are outlined in this paper.
