Description / Table of Contents: Summary Supposing that: A) radioactive heat generation is constant in a superficial layer of thicknessH and no radioactive heat is generated in deeper layers, or B) radioactive heat generation in the depthz is const. e−αz ,Jeffreys has computed thatH and 1/α are nearly 13 km. This figure is rather small.Jeffreys has taken a temperature of commencement that tends to infinity likez and has neglected the diminution of radioactive substances by disintegration. If one takes a temperature of commencement that, with increasingz, approaches a fixed value and considers the half-lives of radioactive elements, one gets the valuesH=23 and 1/α=20 km. New results ofBullard indicate, that radioactive heat generation in rocks is less than was accepted till now. Taking his values one estimates that values of 45 to 50 km forH and 1/α are possible.

Notes: Abstract Synthesis of the high-affinity K+-translocating Kdp-ATPase of Escherichia coli, encoded by the kdpFABC operon, is regulated by the membrane-bound sensor kinase KdpD and the soluble response regulator KdpE. K+ limitation or a sudden increase in osmolarity induces the expression of kdpFABC. Due to the importance of K+ to maintain turgor, it has been proposed that KdpD is a turgor sensor. Although the primary stimulus that KdpD senses is unknown, alterations in membrane strain or the interaction between KdpD and membrane components might be good candidates. Here, we report a study of the influence of the membrane phospholipid composition on the function of KdpD in vivo and in vitro using various E. coli mutants defective in phospholipid biosynthesis. Surprisingly, neither the lack of the major E. coli phospholipid phosphatidylethanolamine nor the drastic reduction of the phosphatidylglycerol/cardiolipin content influenced induction of kdpFABC expression significantly. However, in vitro reconstitution experiments with synthetic phospholipids clearly demonstrated that KdpD kinase activity is dependent on negatively charged phospholipids, whereas the structure of the phospholipids plays a minor role. These results indicate that electrostatic interactions are important for the activity of KdpD.

Notes: Abstract Potassium hexatitanate (K2Ti6O13) powders were synthesized by sol-gel method using supercritical drying to produce ion-exchangeable fine powders with high surface area. The effects of titanium alkoxides and mole ratios of K/Ti were investigated. By using sol-gel method, potassium hexatitanate powders were obtained at 630°C which is 350°C lower than that by melting method. The surface area of this sample was about 30–40 m2/g which was higher than that of melting method sample. Addition of H2O and decrease in mole ratios of K/Ti increased surface area of powders.

Notes: Abstract Low temperature phase transformation of alkoxide-derived titania was studied under an oxygen flow containing water vapor. The addition of hexylene glycol to the titanium alkoxide solution was effective in transforming rutile phase at low temperature (300°C). Hexylene glycol seems to form a bidentate ligand structure with TEOT in solution state. This bidentate structure promoted the rutile phase at low temperature, under O2-steam treatment. This modification of TiO2 gel structure could be monitored by FT-IR and XANES.

Notes: Abstract A rapid, quantitative microbial assay, which is specific for heavy metal toxicity, has been developed. The assay (MetPLATE™) is in a 96-well microtitration plate format and is suitable for determining toxicity characteristics such as median inhibitory concentrations. The sensitivity of MetPLATE™ to heavy metals [Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr(III)] was generally higher than Microtox and was of the same order as or better than Daphnia and fish bioassay. MetPLATE was insensitive to organic compounds at concentrations higher than those found in the environment. Six out of 10 industrial wastewaters or process waters surveyed were toxic. Heavy metal analysis of these waters confirmed the presence of heavy metals in the toxic samples. MetPLATE can be run concurrently with other assays for general toxicity to help determine the nature of chemicals causing toxicity.

Notes: Abstract Earlier work suggested that amino acid uptake by Lemna gibba cells is a H+-cotransport mechanism driven by a proton-electrochemical gradient at the plasmalemma. The present investigations of the transient membrane depolarizations elicited by amino acids and tracer-uptake experiments show that all neutral α-L-amino acids, D-alanine and analogues, like β-alanine and p-fluorophenylalanine, are transported by the same system. It remains to be seen if there are separate mechanisms for the uptake of acidic and basic amino acids.
