Notes: Contents Transmission line systems exist with grounding points at both the sending and receiving ends; due to standing wave phenomena the transmission performance of such systems is critically affected in the neighbourhood of certain resonant frequencies — attenuation, phase constant and characteristic impedance showing large amplitude variations in a relatively small frequency range. In this paper a simple accurate method to estimate the quality factor and the bandwidth of the resonant curves describing the frequency behaviour of the transmission line propagation parameters is presented.

Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Die Berechnung der Wellenparameter von Ketten aus Mehrleiter-Übertragungsystemen bietet keine Schwierigkeit im Fall streng periodischer Ketten.
Notes: Contents Propagation parameters of cascaded multiconductor transmission structures can be easily determined when the chain is strictly periodic. If periodicity is somehow perturbed, which is usually the real case, the evaluation of the chain propagation parameters becomes very complex, especially when the number of cascaded sections is large. To handle this situation we propose an approach based on a standard first order perturbation method allowing a simple relationship to be found between the chain parameters and those characterizing its component cells. The method is first developed for general 2n-port networks and later particularized for the special case of two-port transmission-line systems. Graphs with numerical results are presented allowing the accuracy of the method to be checked.

Notes: Summary Uridine diphosphoglucose is not the sole donor for trehalose synthesis in yest cells: an ADPG-dependent trehalose synthase, has been identified in mutant strains with undetectable UDPG-dependent trehalose-6-P synthase activity. Genetic and chromatographic studies indicate that the two activities correspond to different proteins. The apparent K Km for the nucleotide is similar for both enzymes, and Mg2+ is also required for both activities; however, a striking difference was observed with respect to ATP.Mg activation. This newly determined enzymatic activity in Saccharomyces clarifies previous contradictory results with mutant strains that are able to accumulate trehalose during growth yet whose UDPG-dependent trehalose synthase activity is undetectable in vitro.

Notes: Abstract The acid-base properties of four leaf litter extracts, LLE (eucalyptus, fern, oak and chestnut coverture), were characterized by synchronous fluorescence (SyF) spectroscopy and compared with those of two fulvic acids (FA) extracted from two different horizons (0–5 and 5–15 cm) of an oak forest soil. The characterization was based on the variation with the pH of the properties of the fluorescent structures present in the samples, which function as probes and provide a macroscopic image of their acid-base properties. These sets of SyF spectra collected as a function of the pH show fingerprinting potential. They were treated by a self-modeling curve resolution procedure, evolving factor analysis with a gradient concentration window (EFA-GCW), to reduce the raw spectral data to the number of components, their spectra, and SyF intensity profiles (pH distribution diagrams). Four acid-base systems were detected for all samples of LLE and FA with pKas ranging from 2.5 to 10.0 (pKas about 3, 5, 7 and 9, except for the fern LLE sample which showed pKas about 5, 7, 9 and 10). A similarity analysis of the spectra of the components, performed by cluster analysis, showed that the most acidic fluorescent structures of the LLE are not similar to those of the soil FA, but the less acidic are.

Notes: Abstract A xylose reductase gene (xyl1) of Candida guilliermondii ATCC 20118 was cloned and characterized. The open reading frame of xyl1 contained 954 nucleotides encoding a protein of 317 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 36 kDa. The derived amino acid sequence of C. guilliermondii xylose reductase was 70.4% homologous to that of Pichia stipitis. The gene was placed under the control of an alcohol oxidase promoter (AOX1) and integrated into the genome of a methylotrophic yeast, Pichia pastoris. Methanol induced the expression of the 36-kDa xylose reductase in both intracellular and secreted expression systems. The expressed enzyme preferentially utilized NADPH as a cofactor and was functional both in vitro and in vivo. The different cofactor specificity between P. pastoris and C. guilliermondii xylose reductases might be due to the difference in the numbers of histidine residues and their locations between the two proteins. The recombinant was able to ferment xylose, and the maximum xylitol accumulation (7.8 g/l) was observed when the organism was grown under aerobic conditions.

Notes: Abstract In order to better understand the immune response of Notothenia coriiceps to Pseudoterranova decipiens larvae and other irritant stimuli, we implanted a catgut suture thread, killed P. decipiens larvae and macerated P. decipiens larvae in the hepatic and muscle tissues of the fish. The response varied according to the tissue concerned and the extent of the lesion. The most noticeable immune response occurred with the implant of parasite larvae macerate in the liver, which indicates immunological memory, since all the captured fish were found infected with P. decipiens. An intense response also occurred after macrophages had infiltrated the cuticle of the implanted dead parasite in the liver, which confirms that the cuticle acts as a physical barrier to the immune system. Nevertheless, the immune response of N. coriiceps does not appear able to eliminate the infection and the fish in nature appear to suffer no adverse clinical effects.
