Notes: Abstract New methods for light curve analysis in the frequency-domain applicable to eccentric systems (cf. Kopal and Al-Naimiy, 1978) have been applied to three eclipsing variables — V 477 Cyg, V 1143 Cyg and AS Cam — all wide enough to make their proximity effects photometrically insignificant. New elements of these eclipsing systems have been established, and compared with pre-existing data.

Notes: Abstract The aim of the present paper has been to present an analysis of the light curve of two eclipsing systems RW Gem and AY Cam by Fourier analysis of the light changes in the frequency domain which was developed by Kopal (1975a, b, c, d, e; 1976). In Section 1, the subject is introduced in a general way, with the intention of laying the foundation of the light curve analysis. Section 2 contains the evaluation of the empirical values of the theoretical momentA 2m is demonstrated, with the equation of the condition given. Then the equations forA 2m in terms of the elements of the total and the annular eclipses, including partial and annular phase of transit eclipse, follow. The analysis of the light curves of the two eclipsing binaries (RW Gem and AY Cam), the results and the discussion of our solution, are outlined in Section 3.

Notes: Abstract The basic physical picture of the Algol system is reviewed, and, using collected red and infrared observations, photometric curve fits are investigated by applying numerical quadratures to determine theoretical light curves appropriate to Roche model stars. The ‘contact’ nature of Algol B appears to be confirmed, and effective temperatures of the three components areT A=11 400°,T B=5300°,T C=7600°. In terms of a Lambert's law approach to the ‘reflection effect’, the effective heat-albedo is required to be reduced from unity to one half; and it is also found that the averaged ‘gravity-darkening coefficient’ is close to a value appropriate for a diffusion type of heat-transfer mechanism operating in sub-photospheric layers.

Notes: Abstract Linear limb-darkening coefficientsu required in the analysis of eclipsing binary curves, are tabulated for a wide range of effective temperature (50 000° to 4000°), wavelength λ (0.2 μ≤λ≤2.2 μ), and gravitiesg (2.0≤logg≤5.0). The computation is based on the comprehensive range of model atmospheres of Carbon and Gingerich (1969). The results are compared with the theoretical values of Hosokawa (1957), Kopal (1959) and Grygaret al. (1972), and examined in relation to empirically determined values ofu from analyses of eclipsing binary light curves. An improved agreement between theory and observation for the calculated limb-darkening coefficients of the present work is noted.

Notes: Abstract The aim of the present paper has been to generalize the methods previously developed for analysis of the light changes of eclipsing binary systems in the frequency-domain to cases in which the components of such systems revolve in eccentric orbits. It is shown that these methods can indeed be generalized to systems with eccentric orbits provided that the ‘light moments’A 2m deduced from such eclipses are suitably re-defined in terms of the true, rather than mean, anomaly in the relative orbit; and that due attention is paid to the unit of length in terms of which the fractional radii of the two stars are expressed. When this is done the Fourier methods continue to be applicable to all types of eclipses exhibited by eccentric binary systems — whether these are occultations or transits; total, annular or partial. An application of these methods to practical cases has been postponed for a subsequent communication.

Notes: Abstract Photometric curve fits have been investigated by means of numerical quadratures to develop theoretical light curves appropriate to stars built up in accordance with the Roche model. The method has been applied previously to β Per (Al-Naimiy and Budding, 1977) on the basis of available observations in red and infrared, while presently applied to two systems with contact components. (i) U Sge, spherical primary totally eclipsed by a contact component secondary. Improved photometric elements of the system have been found, and compared with those obtained by Kopal's method in the frequency domain. The outcome of the curve fitting corresponds well with the results of an analysis in the frequency domain. (ii) AW UMa, exhibiting the shallowest minima known for totally eclipsing W UMa systems. The physical and geometrical elements of the system have been found, and the contact nature of the two components confirmed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  Solid 1:1 CT complexes formed between some S-alkyl-N-aryldithiocarbamates and π-electron acceptors (2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), chloranil (CHL)) are synthesized and characterized. Spectral characteristics and stability of the complexes are investigated and discussed in terms of donor molecular structure, π-acceptor electron affinity, and solvent polarity. It is deduced that the complexes are mainly of the n-π type where the ground state wave function can be described primarily by the non-bonding structure. Ionization potentials of the donors are estimated from the CT transition energies of their complexes.

Notes: Abstract TheK-conversion coefficients of seven low energy transitions (∼100–400 keV) in182W following the decay of182Ta have been determined by the NPG method using the newly reported γ-ray intensities measured by Ge(Li) detectors. The results are compared with theoretical values deduced from the tabulations of Rose, Sliv and Band, and Pauli. The weak peak corresponding to theK-conversion line of the 351.3 keV transition could be observed in accordance with the previous investigations, however the existance of the previously reported 146.3 keV transition could not be confirmed. Also theK-conversion line of the recently reported 110.4 transition could not be observed.

Notes: Abstract The effect of treatment with SrCl2 (10 mg 100 g−) on rats 15 min prior to whole body γ-irradiation (7.5 Gy) was studied. The hazardous effects of irradiation were greatly corrected in the treated group. The hyperglycemic effect and liver glycogen accumulation in the untreated group decreased to normal level. The enzymatic activities of serum alkaline phosphatase, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, and lactate dehydrogenase were greatly affected, showing insignificant changes in the treated group of animals. Life span calculated on 50% survival was also significantly elongated by 36.3%. These results show the potentiality of SrCl2 as a radioprotective agent. A proposed mechanism is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The aim of the present paper is to present the analysis of the light curves of four totally-eclipsing systems (BM Ori, VW Cyg, TW Dra, and RW Mon), using the automated Fourier techniques in the frequency-domain, developed recently by Kopal and his school at Manchester University. New Physical and geometrical elements for the above systems are derived.
