Notes: Abstract p-Type polycrystalline diamond films were prepared by hot-filament CVD method using a liquid cyclic organic borinate ester as the doping source. The obtained films were identified as diamond films by means of SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The resistivity of the doped films can be adjusted by changing the temperature of the boron source.

Notes: Abstract  This paper investigates the origin of corundum megacrysts that occur in many basaltic terrains, and which are considered to be eroded from basaltic rocks. Geochemical data for over 80 primary mineral inclusions within corundum megacrysts are used to gain a new insight into the petrogenetic history of the corundum megacrysts. A wide spectrum of minerals is present as inclusions in the corundum; the most common are Nb−Ta oxides (such as titaniferous columbite and uranpyrochlore), alkali feldspar, low-Ca plagioclase (albite-oligoclase) and zircon. Rare inclusions include Fe,Cu-sulphide (low in Ni), cobalt-rich spinel, Th,Ce-rich phosphate and uraninite. The similar chemistry of some inclusion minerals from corundum occurring in widely separated areas suggests that the corundum megacrysts in basalts have a similar petrogenesis. Geochemical characteristics of the inclusions indicate a bimodal grouping, which is best explained by a mixing-hybridisation process. This study indicates that the corundum megacrysts are not cogenetic with their basaltic hosts but are crustal fragments accidentally incorporated into the erupting magma. It is suggested that interactions between a silicic component and an intruding carbonatitic or similar Si-poor magma is responsible for Al-oversaturation, resulting in locally distributed lenses of corundum-bearing rock of mixed paragenesis (“hybrid rock hypothesis”). Feldspar exsolution textures provide strong evidence that this hybridisation occurred at mid-crustal levels. Subsequent volcanic eruptions brought the corundum-bearing rocks (later disintegrated in the magma) up to the Earth's surface. This petrogenetic model for corundum megacrysts is experimentally testable.

Notes: Abstract A novel regeneration system based on direct shoot organogenesis is described for cassava. Plants could be regenerated at high frequency by inducing shoot primordia on explants derived from cotyledons of cassava somatic embryos. After a passage on elongation medium, the regenerated shoots were easily rooted in hormone-free medium and could be successfully transplanted to soil. Using the shoot-organogenesis-based regeneration method, up to eight transplantable plantlets per explant could be regenerated. The system was optimised first for one cassava cultivar, and then its transferability to three other cultivars was demonstrated. This method widens the scope of in vitro regeneration modes of cassava, and is also compatible with Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. To develop an efficient system for production of somatic embryos for regeneration experiments, conditions for inducing primary and cycling somatic embryos were also studied, and highly efficient plant regeneration via germination of somatic embryos was achieved using maltose instead of sucrose in the culture medium, and combining paclobutrazol with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in the embryo induction medium.

Notes: Abstract A new nuclide239Pa was produced by 50MeV/u18O bombardment of uranium. A radiochemical separation method was employed for preparing sources of239Pa. The protactinium isotope239Pa has been identified for the first time by the results observed from the decay of the239Pa and its daughter239U. The half-life of239Pa has been determined to be 106 ±30min.

Notes: Abstract Poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate (PVA-borate) complexes in dilute aqueous solutions were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Two relaxation modes obtained, were scattering vector-q2 dependent and diffusive. The amplitude of slow mode was independent of borax concentration. In the very dilute PVA concentration regime ( [PVA] 〈 5 g/L), the PVA di-diol-borate complexation was dominated by intra-molecular reaction, and the fast mode correlation length ςf which corresponds to the polymer chain dimension increased rapidly with borax concentrations lower than 0.06 M, and reached an asymptote in the higher borax concentration regime. However, for a dilute PVA aqueous solution with higher PVA content (i.e., [PVA] = 9 g/L), both intra-and inter-molecular PVA di-diol-borate complexations might happen. The chain expansion and shrinkage of PVA-borate complex with increasing borax concentration was observed due to the balance between the electrostatic repulsion of the charged diol-borate complexes and the intra-molecular crosslink induced by the intra-molecular di-diol-borate complexation.

Notes: Abstract Local density self-consistent field (SCF) discrete variationalXα calculations are performed on a Ni4 tetrahedron interacting with a probe H2 molecule in special geometries. Optimized basis functions generated from the spherically averaged SCF potential are used. Topological charge-density analyses and binding energy calculations are used to study a portion of the energy surface for the approach of the H2 molecule toward the Ni4 tetrahedron. The effect of the H2 molecule on Ni-Ni, Ni-H bonds and changes in the H-H covalent bond are investigated with the help of the ∇ρ field and various data at its critical points. The qualitative relationship between these data and the calculated binding energies is exploited.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the short-pulse-flash method developed for thermal diffusivity measurements on thin films. Two kinds of CVD diamond film have been prepared, and their thermal diffusivity in the perpendicular direction has been measured with this method. The measurement errors caused by the surface coating are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The thermal diffusivity of brittle coatings cannot be measured by the flash method directly because of the difficulty of preparing free-standing samples. Adopting the flash method using a two-layer composite sample, it is possible to measure thermal diffusivity if the radiant pulse is well defined and good thermal contact on the interface of the composite sample can be ensured. Using an equilateral trapezoidal pulse of an Nd-glass laser measuring the dimensionless temperature history of the rear face of the sample, we determined the thermal diffusivity of thermal control coatings in the temperature range of 80 to 200°C. The results for different thicknesses of substrate showed that the thermal contact resistance of the interface can be neglected.

Notes: Abstract Mullite matrix composites reinforced by SiC particles and Y-TZP, were fabricated by hot-pressing. The effects of adding SiC particles and Y-TZP to mullite or mullite-based materials on properties and toughening mechanisms in the composites were investigated. Crack deflection is proposed as the principal toughening mechanism, produced by the addition of SiC particles. Transformation and microcrack toughening are the two main toughening mechanisms caused by Y-TZP addition. However, the magnitude of their contribution varied with increasing Y-TZP addition. With low Y-TZP addition, the transformation toughening dominated, while at a higher Y-TZP content, the microcrack toughening was dominant. The simultaneous addition of SiC particles and Y-TZP to mullite resulted in higher increases in both flexural strength and fracture toughness, than the simple sum of those obtained by the separate processes. It appears that the two toughening processes were coupled, thereby leading to synergistic toughening and strengthening effects in the mullite composites.
