    Notes: Summary The electrostatic force between a charged conducting sphere and a charged dielectric sphere in a uniform, arbitrarily oriented external electric field is obtained and presented in terms of force coefficients which depend only on the relative geometry of the two spheres and the dielectric constants of the dielectric sphere and the medium. When the dielectric constant of the dielectric sphere is allowed to approach infinity, the resulting computed force agrees with that ofDavis (1964) for two conducting spheres, and when the external field and the charge on the dielectric sphere are set to zero, the resulting force agrees with that ofHall andBeard (1975) for a charged conducting sphere near an uncharged dielectric sphere.

    Notes: Summary Numerical calculations were carried out to determine the effect of a vertical electric field on the efficiency with which electrically charged or uncharged cloud drops and small raindrops of diameters ranging from 84 μm to 1.248 mm collide with electrically charged or uncharged particles of density 2 gm/cm3 and diameters between 1 and 20 μm. For this purpose, numerical flow fields about spheres of Reynolds numbers ranging from 1 to 400 were used to integrate the trajectory of the particle relative to the drop, and the force between two conducting spheres was used to represent the electrostatic force on the particle. The effect of thunderstorm strength electric charges and field on the collision efficiency was found to be highly significant for the smaller collector drops, and declined to insignificance for the largest collector drop.

    Notes: Summary Rates of change of cell volume were measured in suspensions of the halophilic green algaeDunaliella parva subjected to changes in cation composition and concentration of the outside medium. Measurements were made with a particle size analyzer and results were checked by direct microphotography. For any one salt solution, changes in cell volume with concentration were consistent with the Boyle-Van't Hoff model of an osmometer. Nonosmotic volume comprised 60–80% of total cell volume and was sensitive to the nature of the cation, increasing in the order Cs〈K〈Na〈Ca〈Mg. Kinetics of volume change in response to changes in outside salt concentration are best described by two kinetic coefficients differing by one order of magnitude and dependent on the nature of the outside cation (decreasing in order Cs〉K〉Na〉Mg) as well as on direction of water flow.

    Notes: Abstract We have identified a large family with a dominantly inherited chondrodysplasia characterized by a waddling gait, short limbs, and early onset osteoarthritis. The radiographic presentation resembles pseudoachondroplasia in childhood and multiple epiphyseal dysplasia in adults. Electron microscopic examination of cartilage reveals accumulation of material within the rough endoplasmic reticulum similar to that seen in pseudoachondroplasia and the Fairbank type of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. By linkage analysis, we have excluded the genes for aggrecan, decorin, hexabrachion (tenascin), type II procollagen, the α1 chain of type XI procollagen, the α1 chain of type IX procollagen, and link protein, candidate genes that encode structural components of the cartilage extracellular matrix, as the disease locus for this disorder.

    Notes: Abstract Two effective strains of green gram rhizobia S24 (slow growing and Hup+) and M11 (fast growing and Hup-) were tested for leghemoglobin production in nodules and effectivity on six species of ‘cow pea miscellany hosts’. Both strains nodulate green gram [Vigna radiata (L.) (Wilczek)], black gram [Vigna mungo (L.) (Hepper)], cow pea [Vigna unguiqulata (L.)], moth bean [Vigna aconitifolia (Jacq.) (Marechel)], Cluster bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) (Taub.)] and pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.)]. In all these hosts, nodules formed by strain M11 contained 1.5 to 2 times more leghemoglobin than the nodules formed by strain S24. Gel electrophoresis of nodule contents of different host species showed a high concentration of a fast-moving ferricoxy leghemoglobin in the nodules of plants inoculated with strain M11 as compared to that of strain S24. Strain M11, however, was relatively less effective than strain S24 on black gram, cow pea and moth bean and was at par with the later on green gram, cluster bean and pigeon pea. Hydrogen recycling ability of the strain S24 was observed in nodules of all the host species. The effective functioning of strain S24 at low levels of leghemoglobin suggests an involvement of recycling hydrogenase in maintaining an appropriate oxidation-reduction potential in nodules.

    Notes: Abstract This article examines the empirical basis for the assumption of independence between the relative size (length or surface area) of a newborn cell w and the absolute size of its mother at cell division. Random samples from two strains of Escherichia coli B/r cells in steady-state exponential growth, covering a range of doubling times, were fixed in osmium tetroxide and prepared for electron microscopy by agar filtration. Length and diameter of over 3000 constricted cells were measured from the electron micrographs and cell surface area computed by assuming an idealized geometry of right circular cylinders with hemispherical polar caps. In general, these strains were found to divide into two daughter cells with a precision that is independent of the size of the mother. In addition, both a normal and a symmetrical beta-distribution were shown to fit the observed size distributions of w rather well; theoretical grounds for preferring the latter are discussed.

A quantum algorithm is known that solves an unstructured search problem in a number of iterations of order , where d is the dimension of the search space, whereas any classical algorithm necessarily scales as O(d). It is shown here that an improved quantum search algorithm can be devised that exploits the structure of a tree search problem by nesting this standard search algorithm. The number of iterations required to find the solution of an average instance of a constraint satisfaction problem scales as , with a constant α 〈 1 depending on the nesting depth and the problem considered. When applying a single nesting level to a problem with constraints of size 2 such as the graph coloring problem, this constant α is estimated to be around 0.62 for average instances of maximum difficulty. This corresponds to a square-root speedup over a classical nested search algorithm, of which our presented algorithm is the quantum counterpart.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine what role lakeshore homeowner associations might play in environmental management. Lakeshore homeowner associations are formally organized groups of individuals owning property on or in the vicinity of a lake. Lakeshore homeowner associations in the Adirondack Park region of New York State were investigated by both a questionnaire mailed to all presidents and an informal field survey of some permanent lakeshore residents. The study showed that many of these organizations have become highly involved in an array of environmental management activities during their relatively long history. These activities include monitoring septic tank seepage, regulating the use of motorboats, restricting shoreline development, and assisting state and local planning agencies in detecting zoning violations. Some lakeshore homeowner associations are not highly involved in activities designed to maintain or improve quality of the lake environment. These associations are concerned instead primarily with organizing social events and performing other miscellaneous activities, such as access road maintenance. These associations, however, report lower overall water quality in their lakes than those associations with a high degree of involvement in environmental management. The study uncovered two important factors that tend to undermine the ability of lakeshore homeowner associations to undertake environmental management activities. One is the extent of cooperation that can be expected from nonmember residents of the lakeshore, such as seasonal vacationers. The second is an environmental problem that does not originate locally and therefore cannot be controlled by a local organization. Acid precipitation, rated by association presidents as their foremost water quality concern, is one such problem in the Adirondack Park Region.
