    Notes: Abstract The International Germanium Experiment (IGEX) has now analyzed 117 mol yr of data from its isotopically enriched (86% 76Ge) germanium detectors. Applying pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to the more recent data, the lower bound on the half-life for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge is deduced: T 1/2(0ν)〉1.57×1025 yr (90% C.L.). This corresponds to an upper bound on the Majorana neutrino mass parameter, 〈m ν〉, between 0.33 eV and 1.35 eV depending on the choice of theoretical nuclear matrix elements used in the analysis.

    Notes: Abstract Oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis of a plasmid containing the lytA gene coding for the pneumococcal amidase has allowed the separation of the coding sequence of the gene. This sequence has been placed in plasmid pIN-III(lppP-5)-A3 downstream from both a modified lipoprotein promoter and the lactose promoter to construct the recombinant plasmid pGL100. When Escherichia coli RB 791 (pGL100) was grown in the presence of lactose, the pneumococcal amidase accounted for 7% of the total protein present in this strain after 18 h incubation at 37°C. The overproduced amidase was purified in a single-step procedure using a choline-Sepharose 6B column taking advantage of the fact that this enzyme was the unique protein with affinity for choline present in extracts obtained from E. coli RB791 (pGL100). The development of the above design opens up the possibility of studying the mechanism that regulates the activity of this important autolysin by using physicochemical techniques that require the availability of high amounts of purified amidase.

    Notes: Abstract To search for cold dark matter (CDM) particles, the data from two (Ge-76 and Ge-natural) detectors, fabricated in the first phase of the IGEX collaboration, were accumulated and analyzed for a period from May 1995 to May 1999. The use of effective passive and active shielding together with pulse shape discrimination allowed us to perform long-term measurements with an energy threshold of 2 keV at a level of the residual background 0.1 counts/(kg keV d). New restrictions on masses of weakly interacting massive particles and the cross section of their elastic scattering on nuclei have been obtained from the data corresponding to 810 d of live time. The derived exclusion plots compete with the best bounds obtained so far. Annual modulations of the CDM signal have been also investigated. It is shown that the planned operation of all IGEX detectors (at Canfranc and Baksan) with the recently achieved low-energy thresholds gives a chance to achieve the DAMA annual modulation sensitivity region in a nearest future.

Per la prima classe di reazioni si discute un nuovo tipo di effetto tunnel che ha luogo ad alte energie traslazionali. Per ambedue i tipi di reazione si discute il nesso esistente tra le caratteristiche dell'effetto tunnel e la forma di energia che è capace di favorire la reazione in relazione alla posizione della barriera.
    Notes: Summary Tunnelling contributions to the reactive probability of both early- and late-barrier reactions are investigated. For the first class of reactions a new type of tunnelling effect taking place at high translational energy is discussed. For both reactions relations linking tunnelling features to the type of energy promoting reactivity are discussed with regard to the barrier location.

    Notes: Abstract Three uniquely different initial microstructure regimes were created in 2.5 cm thick copper targets: an as-received 98 μm grain size containing ∼1010 dislocations/cm2 (Vickers hardness of 0.89 GPa); an annealed 124 μm grain size containing ∼109 dislocations/cm2 (Vickers hardness of 0.69 GPa); and a 763 μm grain size containing ∼109 dislocations/cm2 (Vickers hardness of 0.67 GPa). Each of these target plates was impacted by 3.18 mm diameter soda-lime glass spheres at nominal impact velocities of 2, 4 and 6 km s-1. Grain size was observed to have only a very small or negligible contribution to cratering, while the dislocation density had a controlling influence on both the target hardness and the cratering process. Residual crater hardness profiles were correlated with specific microstructure zones extending from the crater wall into the target, and both hardness profiles and residual microstructures differed for each specific target, and for each different impact velocity. Microbands coincident with traces of {1 1 1} planes were associated with a zone of residual target hardening and increased with increasing grain size and impact velocity. No significant melt-related phenomena were observed, and crater-related target flow occurs by solid-state plastic flow through dynamic recrystallization, forming a narrow, softened zone at the crater wall.

Like companion experiments utilizing soda-lime glass projectiles (Part I), absolute grain size of the target was observed to be less important than the dislocation density in the cratering process. At low impact velocity, depth/diameter ratios were observed to increase dramatically in contrast to less dense soda-lime glass impactors, and the impactor behaviours were also very different. The ferritic stainless steel impactors spalled into small fragments at or above 2 km s-1 impact velocity and a significant fraction of these fragments remained in the craters. No significant melt phenomena were observed either in connection with projectile fragmentation or in the crater-related, residual microstructures. Dynamic recrystallization, dislocation cell structures and microbands were significant microstructural features in the targets. They extended from the crater walls and contributed to hardness profiles within the cratered targets. These hardness profiles and actual hardness zones generally increased in extent from the crater wall with both impact velocity and projectile density.

    Notes: Abstract. To clarify the relationship of sex male hormones and bone in men, we studied in 140 healthy elderly men (aged 55–90 years) the relation between serum levels of androgens and related sex hormones, bone mineral density (BMD) at different sites, and other parameters related to bone metabolism. Our results show a slight decrease of serum-free testosterone with age, with an increase of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in a third of the elderly subjects studied. BMD decreased significantly with age in all regions studied, except in the lumbar spine. We found a positive correlation between body mass index (BMI) and BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck (P 〈 0.001). No relationship was found (uni- and multivariate regression analysis) between serum androgens or sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and BMD. We found a positive correlation of vitamin D binding protein (DBP) and osteocalcin with lumbar spine BMD and with BMI, DBP, IGF-1, and PTH with femoral neck BMD. In conclusion, there is a slight decline in free testosterone and BMD in the healthy elderly males. However, sex male hormones are not correlated to the decrease in hip BMD. Other age-related factors must be associated with bone loss in elderly males.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of repeated exposures to resting cold air (10°C) on the shivering and thermogenic responses of women to standard cold stress were investigated. Ten women, aged 18 to 34 years, were divided into two groups of five women each. One group, the acclimated (A) was exposed ten times within 2 weeks, the first and the last exposures being the pre-and post-tests respectively. The second group, the control (C) was exposed twice within 18 days. Measurements of rectal and skin temperatures, oxygen uptake, time to onset of shivering (TOS), and perceived cold were performed during all exposures. Shivering responses were evaluated by electromyography and visually. A significant (P〈0.05), increase was seen in TOS (from 26.2 min to 55.6 min), and a significant decrease was seen in thermoregulatory heat production (from 14.78 kcal/h to −2.64 kcal/h) in group A; these changes were evident after about five exposures. It is concluded that the women became cold acclimated as a result of the repeated short-term resting cold air exposures.
