Notes: Abstract The excitation conditions where both direct Coulomb and shake-off processes concur to multiply ionize fluorineK andL shells were adopted in this experiment; 6MeV/amu p,α and C4+ impacts. The ion induced FKα satellites, measured for a series of F bearing compounds, showed significant chemical effects on their intensity distributions. Such effects are explained well with an FL-vacancy rearrangement model. Without any theoretical prediction, rearrangement probabilities or widths of FL shells were estimated by use of a reference compound with high ionicity, i.e. NaF. A linear relationship between FL widths and covalencies of compounds was found for a wide variety of fluorides. For the same compounds, the absolute values of the FL-vacancy rearrangement probabilities or the FL-shell widths obtained here were the same as those estimated from pure direct Coulomb and pure shake-off excitations, respectively. Other models than theL-vacancy rearrangement's are also discussed and eliminated.

Notes: Summary Intraperitoneal administration of vitamin A into the BALB/c mice inoculated with a syngeneic fibrosarcoma, Meth A, caused a remarkable augmentation of tumor rejection. A cell-depletion technique revealed that the primary effector cells responsible for the augmented rejection were Thy-1 positive, Lyt-1 negative, Lyt-2 positive lymphocytes, suggesting the involvement of cytotoxic lymphocytes.

Notes: Abstract L-shell vacancy rearrangement probabilities, $$\tilde f$$ 's, prior toKα X-ray emission andL-shell widths were determined from intensity distributions of theKα satellite structures. Characteristic X-rays were induced by 6 MeV/amu N4+ impacts on atoms with various chemical compositions and with different bonding structures, whose atomic numbers range from 9 to 30. In the region where target atomic numberZ 2≦12, the experimentally deduced $$\tilde f$$ values exceed theoretical ones to large extent. On the other hand, the theoretical $$\tilde f$$ values give upper limits to the experimental ones in the regionZ 2≧13. No significant chemical effect could be found in $$\tilde f$$ values for all the atoms investigated except forF.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical properties of an evaporated C60 film were studied by voltammetry in organic electrolyte solution. Four reversible reduction waves were observed, corresponding to the formation of alkali metal salts of fullerene, A x C60 (A∶ Li, K, Rb,x=1, 2, 3, 4). The voltammograms observed for each cation species were compared and discussed in relation to the cation radius. The change of optical density spectrum by the redox reactions was measured in the wavelength range of visible light. The resistivity of a C60 film protected by a polyimide film decreased rapidly by four orders of magnitude after the electrochemical doping of potassium ions.

Notes: Abstract Hot-pressed SiC-TiC composite ceramics with 0–100 wt% TiC have been investigated to determine the effect of composition (amount of TiC) on the elastic modulus, hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness,K IC. The composites exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to monolithic SiC and TiC, especially in fracture toughness,K IC, value for 30–50 wt% TiC composite. The maximum values ofK IC and room-temperature flexural strength were 6 MPa m1/2 for a 50 wt % TiC and 750 MPa for a 30 wt% TiC composite, respectively. The observed toughening could be attributed to the deflection of cracks due to dispersion of the different particles. Although no third phases were detected by both TEM and XRD studies, an EDAX study and resistivity measurements indicated some possibility of solid solutions being present. The composites containing more than 30 wt% TiC, exhibited resistivity lower than 10−3Ω cm which is favourable for electro-discharge machining of ceramics.

Notes: Abstract Sintering behaviour during hot pressing of SiC-TiC composite ceramics has been investigated with special emphasis on the effect of various processing parameters on the density and mechanical properties of the sintered body. At hot pressing temperatures greater than 2000° C, significant densification occurred in SiC-50 wt%TiC (−0.5 wt%B-1 wt%C) composites. The room temperature flexural strength of the sintered body increased with the hot pressing temperature up to 2000° C and reached a highest value of 710 MPa in accordance to the variation of density with temperature. In sintering of composites without additives, densification was enhanced with the addition of up to 25 wt%TiC, with relative densities higher than 98% observed when hot pressing at 2150° C for 2h.

Notes: Abstract Cemented tungsten carbide–cobalt (WC–Co) alloy has good mechanical properties, so it is widely used for cutting tools, wear-resistant dies and rolls, and shock-resistant punching dies. In this study, a wear test between cemented WC–Co alloy and carbon steel is carried out using a pin-on-disc wear-testing machine. The characteristics as to wear rate, coefficient of friction and surface roughness are investigated. Pin specimen and disc specimen surfaces are analyzed by a fluorescent X-ray analyzer. In addition, the wear characteristics of WC–Co alloy are confirmed by SEM observation of the microstructure of the cemented WC–Co alloy specimen.
