    Notes: Abstract —Recognition that many oceanic islands are shaped by giant landslides has highlighted claims that the Hulopoe Gravel on south Lanai, Hawaii, was deposited by giant waves (mega-tsunami) generated by such a landslide. This interpretation is controversial. Resolution of the controversy has global implications because mass wasting of oceanic islands has been a common process for as long as hot spot volcanism has affected the ocean basins. Thus, if mega-tsunami are attendant upon the mass wasting process, their effect on earth surface processes should be discernible for much of geological time and may be comparable to that resulting from bolide impacts that form astroblemes.¶Detailed facies analysis of the pebble, cobble and boulder gravels that form the Hulopoe Gravel type section shows that the gravels are composed predominantly of basalt clasts with appreciable amounts of limestone clasts in 8 of the 14 beds present. Deposition was not continuous: eight disconformities are recognized in the 9.2 m type section, three of which are associated with truncated paleosols. The Hulopoe Gravel was not deposited by a single tsunami at 105 ka, as has been proposed. One bed is clearly an alluvial deposit. The origins of others are unclear but the facies data do not exclude tsunami as one of the processes that deposited individual beds within the Hulopoe Gravel, either above or below sea level.

    Notes: Abstract. We examined the ability of SV40-immortalized human and rabbit corneal epithelial cells (HCEC and RCEC, respectively) to adapt to chronic hypertonic stress. Under isotonic conditions, in the presence of 50 μm bumetanide, proliferation measured as 3H-thymidine incorporation declined in RCEC and HCEC by 8 and 35%, respectively. After 48 hr exposure to 375 mOsm medium, RCEC proliferation fell by 19% whereas in HCEC it declined by 45%. Light scattering behavior demonstrated that both cell lines mediate nearly complete regulatory volume increase (RVI) responses to an acute hypertonic (375 mOsm) challenge, which in part depend on bumetanide-sensitive Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (NKCC) activity. Following exposing RCEC for 48 hr to 375 mOsm medium, their RVI response to an acute hypertonic challenge was inhibited by 17%. However, in HCEC this response declined by 68%. During exposure to 375 mOsm medium for up to 24 hr, only RCEC upregulated NKCC gene and protein expression as well as bumetanide-sensitive 86Rb influx. These increases are consistent with the smaller declines in RVI and proliferation capacity occurring during this period in RCEC than in HCEC. Therefore, adaptation by RCEC to chronic hypertonic stress is dependent on stimulation of NKCC gene and protein expression and functional activity. On the other hand, under isotonic conditions, HCEC RVI and proliferation are more dependent on NKCC activity than they are in RCEC.

    Notes: Summary Pharmacokinetic data for diclofenac sodium has been well established in healthy volunteers, whereas in patients with rheumatoid arthritis very little information is available in the literature. A single oral dose of enteric-coated diclofenac sodium was given to 10 patients with active rheumatoid disease, adopting the same procedures used for a group of 10 healthy volunteers in whom pharmacokinetic data was already available. Plasma specimens were collected over a period of 8h following administration and concentrations of diclofenac determined by GLC. Resulting plasma concentration curves were similar to those obtained in the healthy subjects in that areas under curves and terminal half-lives were comparable. However, peak concentrations of diclofenac were significantly reduced in the rheumatoid patients. The lower peak concentrations were correlated with the lower serum albumin levels in the patients which are associated with active rheumatoid disease.

    Notes: Summary Plasma and synovial fluid concentrations of diclofenac sodium and its principal hydroxylated metabolites have been measured in sixteen rheumatoid patients on chronic therapy to investigate possible reasons for the drug's extended duration of action despite its apparent short elimination half-life in plasma. Diclofenac was detected in synovial fluid 2 h after dosing but at a lower level than in plasma. Thereafter synovial fluid concentrations remained relatively constant through to 11 h post-dosing whereas plasma levels in the same period declined rapidly from an initially high peak to near the sensitivity limit of the assay. Hydroxylated metabolites (free + conjugated) were rapidly formed with measurable concentrations of the 4′ and 5 mono and dihydroxy derivatives being detected in plasma 2 h after dosing; levels of the 3′ hydroxy metabolite were negligible at this time. Initially plasma levels of all metabolites were higher than those in synovial fluid but after 4 h synovial fluid levels were equal to or slightly higher than those in plasma. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the drug's overall clinical effect.

    Notes: Abstract Coupled oscillator models use a single phase variable to approximate the voltage oscillation of each neuron during repetitivefiring where the behavior of the model depends on the connectivityand the interaction function chosen to describe the coupling. Weintroduce a network model consisting of a continuum of theseoscillators that includes the effects of spatially decaying coupling and axonal delay. We derive equations for determining the stability of solutions and analyze the network behavior for two different interaction functions. The first is a sine function, and the second is derived from a compartmental model of a pyramidal cell.In both cases, the system of coupled neural oscillators can undergo a bifurcation from synchronous oscillations to waves.The change in qualitative behavior is due to the axonal delay,which causes distant connections to encourage a phase shift between cells. We suggest that this mechanism could contribute to the behavior observed in several neurobiological systems.

    Notes: Abstract We explore the influence of synaptic location and form on the behavior of networks of coupled cortical oscillators. First, we develop a model of two coupled somatic oscillators that includes passive dendritic cables. Using a phase model approach, we show that the synchronous solution can change from a stable solution to an unstable one as the cable lengthens and the synaptic position moves further from the soma. We confirm this prediction using a system of coupled compartmental models. We also demonstrate that when the synchronous solution becomes unstable, a bifurcation occurs and a pair of asynchronous stable solutions appear, causing a phase lag between the cells in the system. Then using a variety of coupling functions and different synaptic positions, we show that distal connections and broad synaptic time courses encourage phase lags that can be reduced, eliminated, or enhanced by the presence of active currents in the dendrite. This mechanism may appear in neural systems where proximal connections could be used to encourage synchrony, and distal connections and broad synaptic time courses could be used to produce phase lags that can be modulated by active currents.

    Notes: Abstract The graywackes of Paleozoic turbidite sequences of eastern Australia show a large variation in their trace element characteristics, which reflect distinct provenance types and tectonic settings for various suites. The tectonic settings recognised are oceanic island arc, continental island arc, active continental margin, and passive margins. Immobile trace elements, e.g. La, Ce, Nd, Th, Zr, Nb, Y, Sc and Co are very useful in tectonic setting discrimination. In general, there is a systematic increase in light rare earth elements (La, Ce, Nd), Th, Nb and the Ba/Sr, Rb/Sr, La/Y and Ni/Co ratios and a decrease in V, Sc and the Ba/Rb, K/Th and K/U ratios in graywackes from oceanic island arc to continental island arc to active continental margin to passive margin settings. On the basis of graywacke geochemistry, the optimum discrimination of the tectonic settings of sedimentary basins is achieved by La-Th, La-Th-Sc, Ti/Zr-La/Sc, La/Y-Sc/Cr, Th-Sc-Zr/10 and Th-Co-Zr/10 plots. The analysed oceanic island arc graywackes are characterised by extremely low abundances of La, Th, U, Zr, Nb; low Th/U and high La/Sc, La/Th, Ti/Zr, Zr/Th ratios. The studied graywackes of the continental island arc type setting are characterised by increased abundances of La, Th, U, Zr and Nb, and can be identified by the La-Th-Sc and La/Sc versus Ti/Zr plots. Active continental margin and passive margin graywackes are discriminated by the Th-Sc-Zr/10 and Th-Co-Zr/10 plots and associated parameters (e.g. Th/Zr, Th/Sc). The most important characteristic of the analysed passive margin type graywackes is the increased abundance of Zr, high Zr/Th and lower Ba, Rb, Sr and Ti/Zr ratio compared to the active continental margin graywackes.

    Notes: Abstract Sedimentary rocks from the northern margin of the Trobriand Platform, the north wall of the New Britain Trench, and the floor of the Solomon Sea Basin are volcaniclastics, mudrocks, and neritic and bathyal limestones. Arc-volcanic debris from calc-alkaline or high-K magmatic sources is present at each locality. A minor metamorphic component occurs at one site on the Trobriand Platform which yielded Early Eocene to Middle Miocene material, and at the New Britain Trench site, which yielded Miocene or older and post-Miocene samples. Solomon Sea Basin samples are mudrocks which are apparently no older than Late Pliocene.
