Notes: Summary The work described here is concerned with the effects of local application of retinoic acid to the regenerating limb, administered in silastin blocks. Using 14 C RA we have shown that its rate of diffusion into medium was the same as into regenerating limbs and that the curve of percent loss shows a fast rise tailing off to a plateau. RA caused specific alterations in the proximodistal axis of the regenerate such that complete limbs could be produced from distal amputation planes. Increasing concentrations of RA caused regeneration to commence from increasingly more proximal levels. The effect of time of administration after amputation on proximodistal duplication has been investigated as well as position effects with silastin blocks placed either at the anterior, posterior or dorsal poles of the blastema. These data permitted an estimate of the absolute amount of RA needed to cause alterations in the proximodistal axis −2 to 16 μg per limb or 1 ng per cell. Supernumerary limbs were also induced by these local implants and here there was a distinct position effect with the dorsal side causing the highest frequency. This reveals a possible effect of RA on the anteroposterior axis of regenerating limbs, but some of these supernumeraries were thought to arise from the irritant action of RA rather than a specific effect on pattern formation. The relevance of these results to those obtained on other systems is discussed.

Notes: Summary Agglutinability by concanavalin A was measured with HeLa65 cells grown with prednisolone or sodium butyrate, 2 compounds that increase the activity of the carcinoplacental form of alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme localized in membranes. Prednisolone enhanced concanavalin A agglutination approximately 3-fold while sodium butyrate had no effect.

Notes: Abstract Fruit-body expansion was studied in Coprinus lagopus (sensu Buller) following surgical procedures. Elongation occurred after denuding mushroom caps of essentially all peripheral scales. Young primordia (1–5 mm) failed to develop after vertical bisection. Older primordia (e. g. 10 mm) expanded 3–4-fold after vertical bisection or quadrisection, underwent autolysis and basidiospore production. An amorphous brown gel in the stipe lumen disappeared during development of bisected primordia. Stipes isolated from primordia expanded autonomously and exhibited negative geotropism when incubated upside down or when the stipe apex was removed. Displacement of charcoal particles dusted on intact stipes revealed the most active zone of expansion to be the upper mid-region of the stipe. Segmented stipes likewise showed most active elongation in the mid-region. Vertically bisected stipes also expanded.

Notes: Abstract Chloroflexus aurantiacus grown in batch culture took up exogenous alcohols and incorporated these into bacteriochlorophyll c as the esterifying alcohol. It was possible to change the distribution of the naturally occurring homologs of bacteriochlorophyll c esterified with phytol, hexadecanol, and octadecanol by adding the appropriate alcohol. The corresponding homolog then made up at least 60% of the cellular bacteriochlorophyll c. It was also possible to obtain novel bacteriochlorophyll homologs not found in detectable amounts in control cells by adding fatty alcohols with short chains (C10, C12) or long chains (C20). These changes in bacteriochlorophyll composition had no detectable effects on the spectral properties of the chlorosomes.

Notes: Abstract A method has been developed for recording and analyzing the differential magnetoreflection (magnetotransmission) spectra of semiconductor structures with quantum wells. The method was used to determine the exciton g-factor in semimagnetic CdTe/(Cd, Mn)Te heterostructures with quantum wells. In nonmagnetic structures with quantum wells containing a two-dimensional electron gas, the excitonic damping depends on the spin state of the exciton. This effect is explained by the exchange contribution to exciton-electron scattering.

Notes: Summary Vascular collagen and elastin contents and the ratio of collagen/elastin (C/E) were studied in racing greyhound dogs, a breed which exhibits increased cardiac output. As compared to mongrel dogs, vascular C/E was lower, suggesting a greater distensibility of vessels as an adaptive response to hemodynamic stress.
